Faraday Center Certification by the Ca ad Green Business Program (District 2)
This memorandum provides information on the Faraday Center certification by the Carlsbad
Green Business Program.
Background
In late 2019, Carlsbad was the first city in the San Diego region to join the California Green
Business Network with the launch of the Carlsbad Green Business Program. The Carlsbad Green
Business Program encourages businesses of all sizes to be more sustainable through practices
that achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions, waste diversion, stormwater protection, water
conservation and more.
Since the launch of the Carlsbad Green Business Program, over 40 businesses have completed
the necessary steps to become fully certified and several others are in the process of completing
these steps.
To support actions in the city's Five-Year Strategic Plan and Climate Action Plan, city facilities
have been included in the certification process.
Discussion
On October 29, 2024, staff received notification that the Faraday Center had been certified in the
Carlsbad Green Business Program . To receive certification in the "Municipal Operations"
category, items related to energy efficiency, pollution prevention, solid waste diversion and
reduction, transportation, wastewater, water and the community must be completed. Many
items in the checklist are citywide policies or programs, including but not limited to:
• Setting all computers and laptops to default to sleep or hibernate mode after a certain
amount of time
• Setting printers to default to double-sided printing
• Having a battery recycling program
• Using certified non-toxic cleaning products
• Offering plant-based food options for meetings or events
• Instituting a "smart driving" education program

Items specific to the Faraday Center that were completed for certification include, but are not
limited to:
• Using lighting controls
• Replacing faucet aerators
• Having electric vehicle charging stations
• Having lockers, showers and secure bike storage
Prior to certifying the Faraday Center, staff worked to certify the following three other city
facilities:
• Pine Community Center (certified in January 2023)
• Carlsbad City Library at Dove Lane (certified in November 2023)
• Fire Station 2 (certified in March 2024)
Next Steps
Staff will continue to certify city facilities in the Carlsbad Green Business Program. The next
facility to begin the certification process will be the Stagecoach Community Center.
Each year, all newly certified green businesses receive a City Council proclamation to recognize
their efforts to incorporate more sustainable actions into their business activities. Following the
proclamation, all the certified green businesses are invited to a green business recognition mixer
hosted by the city's program partner to celebrate. The Faraday Center will be included in the
businesses recognized at the 2025 City Council proclamation.
