Exhibits 1.Department Report on Senior Activities and Programs Oct. 3, 2024 Item # Page 12 of 14 2 SENIOR COMM,ISS I ON Staff Report \ Exhibit 1 ADULTS 50+ ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS DEPARTMENT REPORT Oct. 3, 2024 GENERAL Goal 1 & 2: Collaborations beyond the Senior Center & support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan •On June 7, 2024, Yin Yoga for Aging Gracefully, a senior focused intergenerational class, held its first Friday session at Calavera Hills Community Park. •On June 13, 2024, seniors went on an excursion to the Front Porch gallery to view the exhibit “Finding Your Senses.” •On June 13, 2024, attorney Anna Howard gave presentations on wills, trusts and probate. •On July 15, 2024, Stay Safe Online: Protecting Seniors from Cyber Scams, was presented by Karen Kelly, a senior-focused technology specialist. •On July 16, 2024, the Alzheimer’s Association of San Diego began their lecture series with a presentation on Dementia 101. •On July 16, 2024, Successful Aging in Place hosted a senior real estate specialist to lead a discussion on aging in place and knowing when it’s time to move. •On Aug. 13, 2024, Adriana Gonzales, from the USCSD Department of Neurosciences, educated seniors on the effects of Parkinson’s disease. •On Aug. 16, 2024, Eric Emont, a retired geriatric care physician, hosted a class on the importance of advanced care planning. •On Aug. 28, 2024, Mike McMahon continued his Digital Photo & Tech series with an update on the use and implementation of artificial intelligence. •On Sept. 3, 2024, a 50+ Chair Yoga and Sound Bath class, hosted by Sami Schatzman, began at the Stagecoach Community Center. •On Sept. 18, 2024, Mike McMahon was joined by Barbara Swanson from the Buena Vista Audubon Society for a presentation on various north-county songbirds and raptors, treating seniors to an engaging and informative session. •On Sept. 19, 2024, popular local artist Leigh Cohn continued his 150th Anniversary of Impressionism series with a ‘Let’s Paint Water Lilies’ class. Goal 3 & 4: Increase social inclusion and enhance connectivity and minimize isolation •On June 7, 2024, Summer Fridays returned to the senior center courtyard with games, sweet treats and music. •On June 19, 2024, AAA hosted a sold-out Keeping the Keys workshop that provided tips for keeping seniors safe behind the wheel. •On June 24, 2024, a group of local seniors organized a ping pong tournament at the senior center in celebration of the Summer Olympics. •On July 19, 2024, seniors enjoyed a sold-out excursion to beautiful Old Town San Diego for sightseeing, shopping and dining. •On Aug. 9, 2024, seniors attended the TGIF Concert at Alga Norte Community Park to enjoy Back to the Garden. Homebound seniors were offered door to door transportation for this outing. •On Aug. 15, 2024, the Senior Center continued its Broadway Series with a showing of Les Misérables, accompanied by snacks and iced tea. •On Aug. 16, 2024, seniors enjoyed an excursion to Pala Casino for Vegas-style fun and lunch. Oct. 3, 2024 Item #2 Page 13 of 14 {'city of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation •On Aug. 30, 2024, the Senior Center hosted an ‘End of Summer Bash’ with a concert, ice cream, and vendor booths showcasing Senior Center instructors and programming. •On Sept. 16, 2024, Lou Rosgen treated seniors to the sounds of Willie Nelson during another Concert in the Courtyard. •On Sept. 12, 2024, the Senior Center welcomed back Lee Cuthbert and his popular Fun with Rock Painting class. •On Sept. 23, 2024, seniors were treated to a free ballroom dance featuring the best hits from the 50s. Participants had a chance to dress the part and experience a great sense of community. OTHER UPDATES Upcoming Programs •In October 2024, five educational presentations will take place on the changes to Medicare. Check the Seaside Insider for full session details. •On Oct. 15, 2024, the Senior Center will be partnering with the Front Porch Gallery to lead a workshop where community members can create their own art pieces to be featured in the upcoming “Gallery Takeover” exhibition. The Front Porch Gallery is located at 2903 Carlsbad Boulevard and the exhibit is tentatively scheduled to beginning in early 2025 •On Oct. 28–31, 2024, staff will lead Halloween-themed games and activities in the dining room before lunch service. Special Revenue Fund •Senior Center Special Revenue Fund budget/donations review Current balance for fund – $314,931.45 May 15, 2024 – Sept. 15, 2024 o DONATIONS: None to report. o MISC REVENUE: $5,965.60 – Consists of Fitness Center drop-in fees, monthly memberships, quarterly memberships, and annual memberships. o EXPENDITURES: $6,906.90 – Includes an appreciation dinner for volunteers, an ‘End of Summer Bash’ with a concert in the courtyard, repairs to the fitness room equipment, and the purchase of a Life Core Fitness Assault Air Rower for the fitness room. STATISTICAL REPORT •June – August 2024 show a significant drop in total services, reflecting a seasonal trend of lower participation in summer and higher participation in winter.
