RESUBMITTAL REVIEW
Racking Plan - High-Piled Storage
Provide a High-Piled Storage Fire Code Compliance Report prepared by qualified person acceptable to
Carlsbad Fire Prevention. Report must detail storage arrangement, methods and commodities for
compliance with California Fire Code Chapter 23 and NFPA 13 standard.
Provide a floor plan showing location of proposed storage racks, aisles, cross aisles and access to exit
doors.
Show locations of smoke and heat vents. Indicate automatic operation temperature - fusible link.

Provide a floor plan showing locations of required smoke and heat vents. Based on the High-
Piled Storage Report prepared by Klausbruckner and Associates, smoke and heat vents are
required at a ratio of 1:50. Smoke and heat vent floor plan must also include the following
information:
Operation of vents - smoke and heat vents must be operated by approved automatic
and manual means. Note method of operation and temperature of automatic
operation. Vent operating element must be a higher temperature than the fire sprinkler
heads.
Listing of vents - smoke and heat vents shall be listed and labeled to indicate
compliance with FM 4430, /CC ES AC 331, or UL 793.
Location - vents required over the storage area and 15 feet beyond. Maximum
spacing of vents is 100 feet and maximum distance from vents to wall is 50 feet.

L3 Provide a site plan showing location of fire access roadways for the purpose of determining
location of required fire access doors. A minimum of one access door shall be provided in
each 100 lineal feet, or fraction thereof, of the exterior walls that face required fire apparatus
access roads. The required access doors shall be distributed such that the lineal distance
between adjacent access doors does not exceed 100 feet.
L3 Shelf storage - depending on fire sprinkler option chosen from the High-Piled Storage Report,
the following details must be shown in the shelving plan:
Option #2a - show required full height, solid vertical transverse barrier per NFPA 13
guidelines in back-to-back storage arrangement.
Or, Option #2b - show solid shelf, shelf storage not classified as back-to-back shelf
detail.
Or, Option #2c - Show grated shelving greater than 50% open, back-to-back storage
(see option #2a for back-to-back requirement) or, solid shelving not greater than 32
square feet with 3 inch gaps between shelves.
