C-16 558084 July 6, 2010 Attn: Steve Honn Subject: Osmetch Underground Piping Video Comments Steve, I had a chance to view the video, and there appears no obstructions inside the piping. However I feel the video was inconclusive in showing the actual condition of the inside of the piping. Below I have outlined what I think the best course of action is to move forward with this issue and to expand the life of the existing piping system. Proceed with the UG flush per NFPA 25, have a rep from Reno and Carlsbad FD witness the test, and see if any debris is flushed out of the UG piping. Have a water and pipe sample from the overhead fire sprinkler system removed and tested for indications of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) after the system is restored to service (3-6 months). Implement a regular Testing, Maintenance and Service program, NFPA 25 4.1.2 states that this is the responsibility of the owner of the property. This is the easiest and most cost efficient way to monitor the long-term condition of the UG and overhead piping. During these inspections water flow test results will be recorded and compared with earlier test results giving the inspector a good indication of the condition of the piping. Periodic water samples will also be collected and reviewed per NFPA 25. Since IFS was not the original UG contractor, and our current scope of work does not include any UG work we are unable to assume any liability at this time regarding this matter. It offers the additional feature of greatly increased safety to life, and it should be used advisedly under the direction of approving authorities having jurisdiction. The sprinkler is available with a nominal I" of adjustment and a low profile cover plate assembly. All that is seen at the ceiling is a 3 3/8" diameter ceiling plate color finished to match the specifier's exact requirements. The GL Series Concealed Sprinkler may be virtually invisible as it does not interrupt the "smooth flow" of the ceiling. The provided protective cap needs to be removed in order to install the sprinkler with the proper wrench. The protective cap must be replaced on the sprinkler until the time the cover plate is to be installed. The "push on - screw off' designed cover plate is easily installed with a nominal 1" inch of adjustment. Operation of the sprinkler occurs when heat build up causes the solder holding the cover plate to the support shell to melt allowing the cover plate to fall clear. Continued heat build up causes the glass bulb to burst allowing the deflector to drop down and distribute water in an approved pattern. The heart of Globe's GL Series sprinkler proven actuating assembly is a hermetically sealed frangible glass ampule that contains a precisely measured amount of fluid. When heat is absorbed, the liquid within the bulb expands increasing the internal pressure. At the prescribed temperature the internal pressure within the ampule exceeds the strength of the glass causing the glass to shatter. This results in water discharge which is distributed in an approved pattern depending upon the deflector style used. The sprinkler and escutcheon are not factory assembled. As- sembly is done in the field.
