FIGURE A 8.0 K-FACTOR MC )DEL F890 QUICK AND STANDARD RESPONSE EXTENDED COVERAGE LIGHT HAZARD PENDENT AND RECESSED PENDENT SPRINKLERS The 8.0 K-Factor (17/32 inch orifice), Model F890 Designer Quick and Standard Response Extended Cover- age Light Hazard (ECLH) Pendent and Recessed Pendent Sprinklers (Ref. Figure A) are automatic sprinklers of the.frangible bulb type. They are in- tended for use in automatic sprinkler systems designed in accordance with standard installation rules (e.g., NFPA 13) for the protection of light hazards up to a maximum coverage area of 400 It 2 (37,2 m2), as compared to the maxi- mum coverage area of 225 ft2 (20,9 M2) for standard coverage sprinklers. The recessed version of the F890 ECLH Sprinkler is obtained by combin- ing the pendent sprinkler with the Model F705 Recessed Escutcheon (Ref. Figures A and C). The F705 Re- cessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm ) of adjustment from the flush pendent position. The F705 is a separable two-piece design which allows installation of the sprin- klers and pressure testing of the fire protection system, prior to ceiling con- struction and/or application of a finish coat to the ceiling. They also permit refinishing of a ceiling surface without having to first shut down the fire pro- tection system and remove sprinklers. The adjustment provided by the F705 substantially reduces the accuracy to which the fixed pipe drops to the sprin- klers must be cut. Also, the Closure has a 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) wide flange which provides ample clearance for covering the mounting hole. Laboratory listings and approvals for the 8.0 K-Factor, Model F890 De- signer Quick and Standard Response Extended Coverage Light Hazard (ECLH) Pendent and Recessed Pen- dent Sprinklers are given in Table A. The laboratory listings and approvals only apply to the service conditions indicated in the Technical Data and Design Criteria sections. WARNING The Model F890 Designer Quick and Standard Response Extended Cover- age Light Hazard (ECLH) Pendent and Recessed Pendent Sprinklers de- scribed herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the appli- cable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities Printed in U.S.A. 5-99 TD594 SPRINKLER FINISH TYPE TEMPERATURE RATING BULB COLOR CODE NATURAL BRASS I CHROME PLATED I POLYESTER COATED (All Colors) PENDENT 135017/570C Orange 1, 2, 3 Yellow 1550F/680C Red 1750F/79°C 200°F1930C Green 1,2 RECESSED* 1350F/570C Orange 1,2,3 Yellow 1550F/680C Red 175°F179°C F200-F/930C Green 1,2 NOTES: Listed by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. The installing contractor or manufacturer should be contacted relatiue to any questions. The 8.0 K-Factor, Model F890 De- signer Quick and Standard Response Extended Coverage Light Hazard (ECLH) Pendent and Recessed Pen- dent Sprinklers are rated for use at a maximum service pressure of 175 psi (12,1 bar) and they are available in the temperature ratings and finishes indi- cated in Table A. Recessed versions of the F890 ECLH Sprinklers are obtained by utilizing the Model F890 Pendent Sprinkler in com- bination with the Model F705 Re- cessed Escutcheon. The Model F705 Escutcheons are available either with a chrome plated finish or a coated fin- ish in any color. The nominal discharge curves plotted in Figure B represent the flow "Q" in GPM (LPM) as determined by the for- mula: Q=KJ where the nominal sprinkler discharge coefficient "K" equals 8.0 (115.2); and = pressure in psi (bar). Listing standards permit the actual value of "K" to vary from 7.4 to 8.2 (106,6 to 118,1). The F89 utilizes a 3 mm Bulb with a die-cast dezincification resistant bronze alloy Frame. The two pieces of the Button Assembly are constructed from brass per ASTM B16 (C36000) and copper (C12200). The Gasketed Spring Plate consists of a Beryllium Nickel (N03360) disc spring that is sealed on both its inside and outside edges with a Teflont gasket. The Compression Screw is a bronze per ASTM B140 (C31400), and the Deflec- tor is brass per ASTM B36 (C22000). The F705 Recessed Escutcheon pro- vided for use with the F890 ECLH Sprinklers (Ref. Figure C) has a Clo- sure and Mounting Plate fabricated from low carbon steel. The Mounting Plate prongs, which are compressed back into the Mounting Plate as the Closure is pushed over it, maintain a tight friction fit between the two pieces. The Mounting Plate and Closure can also swivel relative to each other and compensate for non-perpendicularity between the F890 ECLH Sprinkler and the ceiling. The 8.0 K-Factor, Model F890 De- signer Quick and Standard Response Extended Coverage Light Hazard (ECLH) Pendent and Recessed Pen- dent Sprinklers are only to be installed in accordance with Table B-i or B-2, as applicable. NOTE Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss ofliquid from the bulb. With the sprin- kler held horizontal, a small air bub- ble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 135°F/57°C to 200°F/93°C temperature ratings. (The bubble, in some cases, may be barely perceptible for the lower tem- perature ratings.) The Model F890 ECLH Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instructions. Prior to installing each sprinkler, ver- ify that the face of the sprinkler fitting is within the proper range of distance which can be accommodated by the particular type of escutcheon. When installing the F890 Sprinkler with the F705 Recessed Escutch- eon, for best overall appearance, use Dimension UA indicated under the "Fully Recessed Dimensions" heading of Figure C. Otherwise, use Dimension "A" under the "High Ad- justment Dimensions" heading. In either case, the remaining adjust- ment can then be used to compen- sate for the possible manufacturing variations in the take-out of the fit- tings, as well as in the make-in of the sprinklers (as permitted by ANSI B1.20.1). SELECTION: Select the appropriate wrench based on the following require- ments: A. Model F890 Sprinklers, with a natural brass or chrome plated finish and where the Wrench Flats shown in Figure A are ac- cessible, are to be installed us- ing the Model F799 or 1948 Sprinkler Wrench. Automatic sprinklers must never be shipped or stored where their tempera- tures will exceed 1 O0°F/380C and they must never be painted, plated, coated or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of com- bustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be com- pletely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers - both before and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb (ref. Installation Section). Model F799 Sprinkler Wrench Model F890 Sprinklers with a polyester coated finish must only be installed with the Model 1948 Sprinkler Wrench to pro- tect the finish. Model F890 Recessed Pen- dent Sprinklers which are to be installed in fixed ceiling applica- tions must only be installed with the Model 1948 Sprinkler Wrench. Model 1948 Sprinkler Wrench USE: When using the F799 Sprinkler Wrench, the Wrench is to be applied to the Sprinkler Wrench Flats only (Ref. Figure A). To use the 1948 Sprinkler Wrench, pass the Wrench over the Sprinkler from the side, and then engage the Wrench with the Sprinkler Wrench Flats (Ref. Figure A). Using a 1/2 inch ratchet drive or by applying an 8 or 10 inch adjustable wrench to the square end of the Sprinkler Wrench, tighten the sprinkler into the fitting. NOTE Before closing a fire protection system control value for maintenance work on the fire protection system which it con- trols, permission to shut down the af- fected fire protection system must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. It is recommended that automatic NOTE sprinkler systems be inspected quar- Push on the Sprinkler Wrench, while it is being turned, to ensure that the Wrench terly by a qualified Inspection Service. stays fully engaged with the Sprinkler Wrench Flats. Carefully remove the Sprinkler Wrench by first disengaging it from the Sprinkler• Wrench Flats, and then passing sideways over the Sprinkler. FIGURE D SPRINKLER WRENCH SELECTION AND USE sprinkler threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Refer to Figure D and select the appropriate Sprinkler Wrench for tightening the sprinkler into the fit- ting. NOTES A leak tight 3/4 inch NPT sprin- kler joint should be obtained with a torque of 10 to 20 ft.lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leakage or im- pairment of the sprinkler Do not attempt to make-up for in- sufficient adjustment in the es- cutcheon plate by under- or over- tightening the sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. 4. In recessed installations, after the ceiling has been installed or the fin- ish coat has been applied, slide on the F705 Closure over the F890 Sprinkler and push the Closure over the Mounting Plate until its flange comes in contact with the ceiling.
