Dear Mr. Konochuck: We have performed field and laboratory testing and observed grading and wall backfill for the fill constructed within the foun- dation retaining walls for your proposed building at 3305 Tyler Street, Carlsbad, California. Prior to compaction operations, old pavement subgrade and mis- cellaneous debris were removed to firm competent natural ground (see Density Test No. 1). Fills were constructed from the on-site materials and an import- ed brown silty sand. The majority of the fill within the walls (to within two to four feet of the walls) was compacted in six-to eight- inch lifts using a doger and sheepsfoot during August 26 and 27, 1983 with the toe of temporary slopes extending to the wall. footings. During the period of September 9 and 10, 1983, the backfill be- tween the constructed fill slopes and foundation retaining walls was placed and compacted utilizing a small tractor, double drum motorized roller and motorized hand compactor. Fills were placed in compacted lifts of four to eight inches. Representative samples of the predominant fill material, an im- ported brown silty SAND and existing on-site sands, were taken to the laboratory and moisture-density curves prepared in accordance with ASTM D 1557-78 with the following results. ~ .. Field density tests were performed in accordance with ASTM D 1556-64. Their locations are shown on the attached sketch and the results are as follow: ,ttsr. ... ~. p ~ TEST •• .,. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS As indicated by the above tests and field observations, all fill less the upper two to four inches was compacted to at least 90% of the maximum dry density and the granular soils were determined to be nonex- pansive.
