Re: Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium Audiovisual Project Update (District 3)
This memorandum provides an update on the status of the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium
Audiovisual Update Project, Capital Improvement Program Project No. 4753.
Background
In the Capital Improvement Program for fiscal year 2022, a project was created to update the
audiovisual system in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium and upgrade technology and finishes in
the William D. Cannon Art Gallery at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane . Design work began
in August 2022 and was completed in November 2022. Due to the high estimated cost of the
additional improvements and funding availability, the project scope was subsequently revised
to defer the work associated with the William D. Cannon Art Gallery and the adjacent
Ann Kulchin Courtyard.
On January 9, 2024, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 2024-002, approving the plans,
specifications and contract documents for the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium Audiovisual
Update Project, and directing the revised project to be advertised for bidding. On
February 21, 2024, staff received three bids for construction of the project. On May 7, 2024, the
City Council adopted Resolution No. 2024-088, awarding a contract to the successful bidder. On
June 14, 2024, staff issued a Notice to Proceed for the contractor to begin the work.
Discussion
The construction work in the Schulman Auditorium has been proceeding well and is now
nearing completion on time and within budget. The new technology has been commissioned,
and Library & Cultural Arts Department staff are currently being trained on the use of the new
technology.
Next Steps
With the anticipated project completion in early March, Library & Cultural Arts Department
staff are planning to host a re-opening event, sponsored by the Carlsbad Library & Arts
Foundation, in the newly renovated auditorium, to provide an opportunity for the City Council
and the community to experience the improvements and upgrades. The newly renovated

auditorium will now be equipped to serve as an alternate venue for City Council meetings, as
needed, and to serve the community with its expanded audiovisual capacity.
The date of the open house is tentatively scheduled for Saturday evening, March 29, 2025.
