In response to a phone -call from Brian Stafford of Geocon, Inc., I met with
you . and Brian at the project site on Tuesday, May 12. The subject of this
meeting was the splicing of the proposed steel p1pe piles. The construction
drawings did not address the splice and no details were provided.
Sheet A 1s enclosed to show a detail which is appropriate .to sp11ca the pipe.
It is IIY understanding that this is the detail that was actually employed at
this project to splice the pipe ptles.
The pipe piles are loaded with axial load only and as a result, the welds ere used to install the inner pipe sleeve to insure bearing between two pipe pile
sections. The welds are not required to transfer load and as such are not
stressed and would comply with Exception 5.8.2 of U.B.c. Section 30CS (a).
Therefore the pipe splice welds would not requ1re special 1nspect1on. The
welds should be performed by a cart1f1ed weldar.
Also, the typical grade beam 1s detailed at 12 inches wide. In response to
actual field conditions, it 1s acceptable to widen the concrete grade beam to
24 inches in width. The same bar clearances shown on the typical details
should be used and the 13. t1e bars noted at 16 inch centers should be widened
in accordance w1th the 1ncreased beam width.
