Recommended Action
Receive a report on recently completed and upcoming Adults 50+ activities, donations and
grants, as well as other topics of interest. (Staff Contact: Eric Biggin, Parks & Recreation

Executive Summary
Recreation Area Manager Eric Biggin and Recreation Supervisor Andi Koller will report on recently
completed and upcoming senior activities, donations and grants, as well as other topics of
interest.

ADULTS 50+ ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS
DEPARTMENT REPORT

GENERAL
Goal 1 & 2: Collaborations beyond the Senior Center & support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan
• In October 2024, the Senior Center hosted five popular presentations that addressed
Medicare questions and changes for the new year.
• On Oct. 2, 2024, Carlsbad Girl Scouts assisted seniors with questions about their phones and
tablets.
• On Oct. 15, 2024, Jean Kean, a volunteer instructor, led a 'Diorama of Aspiration'
workshop where attendees used kits donated by Front Porch Gallery to craft their own
dioramas, which will be showcased by Front Porch Gallery in January 2024.
• On Oct. 16, 2024, Dr. Sebastian presented on the benefits of regenerative medicine and how stem
cells can help with pain and neuropathy.
• On Oct. 18, 2024, seniors enjoyed an excursion to the Birch Aquarium, where they viewed the
stunning marine life featured in more than 60 different habitats.
• On Oct. 22, 2024, the Senior Center expanded its partnership with the County of San Diego by
bringing Tai Chi to Alga Norte Community Park on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
• On Oct. 23, 2024, Mike McMahon introduced and explained popular smartphone payment apps.
• On Oct. 26, 2024, volunteers Debbie and Simon Prince started a new Shotokai Karate class on
Saturdays for ages 18+ that teaches the fundamentals movements of karate.
• On Oct. 30, 2024, local artist Leigh Cohn continued his 150th Anniversary of Impressionism series
with a lecture on Claude Monet’s art, life, and influence on the Impressionist movement.
Goal 3 & 4: Increase social inclusion and enhance connectivity and minimize isolation
• On Oct. 3, 2024, the Carlsbad Cruisers moved their Thursday trail walks to the Batiquitos
Lagoon.
• On Oct. 4 & 18, 2024, Creative Crafting students transformed everyday items into Halloween
works of art.
• On Oct. 10, 2024, seniors enjoyed a screening of the creepy thriller Cold Creek Manor.
• On Oct. 17, 2024, seniors enjoyed My Fair Lady as part of the continued Broadway series.
• On Oct. 21, 2024, Kim Shea of Community Friendship Builders and Susan Carey kicked-off
Let’s Talk Good Living, a new discussion group on successful aging.
• On Oct. 21, 2024, seniors enjoyed the bluegrass sounds of the Vulcan Mountain Boys during a
free concert in the courtyard.
• On Oct. 28–31, 2024, staff led spooktacular games and activities in the dining room before lunch
service, including trivia, bingo, and a costume walk.
• On Nov. 4, 2024, instructor Saleemah offered a free Zumba Gold Seated Toning class.

Upcoming Programs & Additions
• On Nov. 15, 2024, volunteer Ruth Hawkins will lead a tour and introduction to our Senior Center
computer room and library.
• On Nov. 21, 2024, Kids for Peace will visit the Carlsbad Senior Center to socialize with lunch
participants.
Special Revenue Fund
• Senior Center Special Revenue Fund budget/donations review
Current fund balance – $317,110.02
Sept. 15, 2024 – Oct. 15, 2024
o DONATIONS: None to report.
o MISC REVENUE: $1,012.10 – Consists of Fitness Center drop-in fees, monthly
memberships, quarterly memberships, and annual memberships.
o EXPENDITURES: $296.96 – Includes costs for new pool room cues and a Concert in the
Courtyard.
STATISTICAL REPORTS
• An additional 900 transportation units (450 round-trip rides) were approved by the County to be
used by June 30, 2025.
