APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes of the regular meeting held Feb. 26, 2025
Motion by Trustee McBride, seconded by Trustee Laufer, to approve the minutes as presented.
Motion carried, 4/0/1 (Sheffler -Absent).

CONSENT CALENDAR: None.

DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
1. LIBRARY REPORTS FOR FEBRUARY 2025: Receive the Narrative Reports and Statistical Reports
for February 2025. (Staff contact: Laura Mendez, Library & Cultural Arts Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the reports.
The Board received the reports.
2. CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER 2025: Receive a report from staff on programs and events
scheduled for Carlsbad Reads Together 2025. (Staff contact: Emily Hardy, Library & Cultural
Arts Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.

Senior Librarian Emily Hardy reviewed a PowerPoint presentation (on file in the Office of the
City Clerk).

3. PERMANENT STORYWALK PROJECT: Receive a presentation on StoryWalk, the library's
upcoming permanent installation at Buena Vista Reservoir Park. (Staff contact: Jennifer
Benson, Library & Cultural Arts Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.

Librarian Jennifer Benson reviewed a PowerPoint presentation (on file in the Office of the City
Clerk).
Trustee Laufer inquired about how the pages are made for display and the cost. Librarian
Jennifer Benson and Deputy Library Director Nye answered that the stories are deconstructed
books that are then laminated, and the cost is approximately thirty dollars per book.
Trustee McBride inquired about how the StoryWalk content will be selected. Jennifer Benson
responded staff will select stories along with input from the community.
Vice Chair Moran inquired about offering English and Spanish books now that the StoryWalk
will be read in one direction compared to previous versions. Jennifer Benson responded staff
will search for books that are offered in both English and Spanish on the same page.
4. HISTORY OF CARLSBAD: Receive a presentation on the history of Carlsbad from the Genealogy
& Carlsbad History division. (Staff contact: Kristi Bell, Library & Cultural Arts Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.
The Board received the report.
Senior Librarian Kristi Bell reviewed a PowerPoint presentation (on file in the Office of the
City Clerk).
Trustee Waidelich inquired about Barrio family history. Senior Librarian Kristi Bell responded
there is Barrio family history available, and it is included in her full presentation which she
condensed for the Library Board.
BOARD COMMENTARY AND REQUESTS FOR CONSIDERATION OF MATTERS: The Board
Members make brief announcements, brief reports of their activities and requests for future
agenda items.
Trustee Waidelich reported that the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation are looking forward to
the reopening of the Ruby G. Schulman auditorium, and hosting the Carlsbad Reads Together
2025 author reception on April 24.

DIRECTORS COMMENTS:
Deputy Library Director Katie Nye commented on the following:
• Impacts on the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) funding
• Citywide Code of Conduct approved by Carlsbad City Council
• Explore More Program (previously Three-Part Art) for third graders
• CityStuff tours at the Georgina Cole Library for third graders
• Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium re-opening event
ANNOUNCEMENTS: This section of the Agenda is designated for announcements to advise the
community regarding events that Members of the Board have been invited to, and may
participate in.
