Page 2 Review Comments Poinsettia Ridge, Tract 16596, Carlsbad, California Field verify that the noted static pressure of 89.0 psi exists at the highest pad elevation, as there was no indication of where this pressure was applicable. Ball valves on Watts 007 shown in riser diagram should be locked in the open position, as control valves which can isolate the fire sprinkler system independent of the domestic system are not allowed without being locked. General notes 1 and 9 on sheet 1 are in error as they reference the 2007 edition of NFPA-13D, which has not been adopted by Carlsbad Fire. These notes were redlined on the plans. The riser detail indicates a 2" water meter, which seems unlikely for single family residences of this size. Field verify that at least a 1" diameter meter is installed. Sheet 3 comments The spacing in the master bedroom and family room is at 18', and requires 17 gpm per the manufacturer's requirements. The calculations use the proper flow, and the hydraulic design sticker has been redlined. The "garage" hydraulic calculations were not flowing the proper reference points, and have been discarded. (References 16/20 vs. 27/28) Sheet 4 comments. The spacing in the family room is at 18', and requires 17 gpm per the manufacturer's requirements. The calculations use the proper flow, and the hydraulic design sticker has been redlined. 8. Same as comment #6. (References 14/17 vs. 29/30) The following comments are for your information and will appear on every residential sprinkler review. The alarm bell must be capable of being heard, above background noise, with doors closed, in all living areas of the residence. This will be checked at final acceptance. Pressure required at base of riser will be verified to be available at time of final acceptance. Sprinkler heads are omitted from bathroom areas under 55 SF in area with noncombustible plumbing fixtures. Fixtures will be verified at final acceptance. Sprinkler head blockage or pattern disruption caused by beams or other obstructions will be verified to not exist at final acceptance inspection. Sprinkler heads should be located the proper distance from heat sources (stoves, kitchen ranges, fireplaces, heat diffusers, etc.) This will be checked at final acceptance inspection. Sprinkler heads located in an unconditioned space (garage, water heater closet, etc.) should be fast response type with an appropriate temperature rating, commercial heads are acceptable in these areas. All exposed piping shall be black steel or copper. Concealed piping can be CPVC plastic. DAD-F,: 5/U7/20'i0 M:Andrew DWG\Poinsettia Ridge\Plan a GARAGE.rdf Page 1 RESIDENTIAL FIRE SYSTEMS, INC. DESCRIPTION Viking Freedom® Residential Concealed Pendent Sprinkler VK457 is a small high- sensitivity solder fink and lever residential sprinkler designed for installation on con- cealed pipe systems where the appearance of a smooth ceiling is desired. The orifice design, with a K-Factor of 4.9 (70.6 metric*), allows the sprinkler's efficient use of available water supplies for the hydraulically designed fire-protection system. The fast response operating element and special deflector combine speed of operation and areas of coverage to meet residential sprinkler standards. The sprinkler is pre-assembled with a threaded adapter for installation with a low- profile small-diameter cover assembly installed flush to the ceiling. The two-piece design allows installation and testing of the sprinkler prior to installation of the cover plate. The push-on", 'thread-off' design of the concealed cover plate assembly allows easy installation of the cover plate after the system has been tested and the ceiling finish has been applied, while also providing up to 1/2' (12.7 mm) of vertical adjustment. The cover assembly can be removed and reinstalled, allowing temporary removal of ceiling panels without taking the sprinkler system out of service or removing the sprinkler. LISTINGS AND APPROVALS cULus Listed: Category VKKW Refer to the Approval Chart on page 147w and Design Criteria on page 147x for cULus Listing requirements that must be followed. 3. Viking Freedom® Residential Concealed Pendent Sprinkler VK457 and Cover Plate Assembly must be ordered separately: Sprinkler: Part No. 14694AC (includes a 165 "F (74 "C) rated sprinkler with a protective plastic cap covering the unit). Cover Plate Assembly: Base Part No. 13750 (2-3/4" diameter), Base Part No. 14934 (3-5/16" diameter), or Base Part No. 15394 (square cover plate, 3-5/16" diameter) Specify finish and temperature rating of the cover plate assembly by first adding the appropriate suffix for the finish and then the appropriate suffix for the cover temperature rating to the base part number: Finish Suffix: Polished Chrome = F, Painted White = M4SW1004, Painted Ivory = M-/5W1634, Painted Black = M-/SW1007 Temperature Suffix ("F/°C): 135°/57" =A For example, cover 13750 with a Polished Chrome finish and a 135 °F/57 "C temperature rating = 13750FA. Available Finishes And Temperature Ratings: Refer to Table 1 Accessories: (Also refer to the "Sprinkler Accessories" section of the Viking data book.) Sprinkler Wrenches**: Heavy Duty Part No. 13623W/B (available since 2006), or Head Cabinet Wrench Part No. 13619*** (available since 2006) Optional Concealed Cover Plate Installer Tool Part No. 14412 (available since 2007) Optional Large Concealed Cover Plate Installer Tool Part No. 14867 (available since 2007) **Requires a 1/2 ratchet (not available from Viking). ***Also optional for removal of the protective cap. Ideal for sprinkler cabinets. Sprinkler Cabinet: Part No. 01731A, Capacity: five (5) sprinklers (available since 1971) INSTALLATION Refer to appropriate NFPA Installation Standards OPERATION During fire conditions, when the temperature around the sprinkler approaches its operating temperature, the cover plate detaches, releasing the deflector. Continued heating of the exposed sprinkler causes the fusible element to disengage releasing the sealing assembly. Water flowing through the sprinkler orifice strikes the deflector, forming a uniform spray pattern over a specific area of coverage determined by the water supply pressure at the sprinkler to extinguish or control the fire. INSPECTIONS, TESTS AND MAINTENANCE Refer to NFPA 25 for Inspection, Testing and Maintenance requirements. Product Description Reliable Models Fl FR and El FR Recessed Sprinklers are quick response sprinklers which combine the durability of a standard sprinkler with the attractive low profile of a decorative sprinkler. The Models Fl FR and Fl FR Recessed automatic sprinklers utilize a 3.0 mm frangible glass bulb. These sprinklers have demonstrated response times in laboratory tests which are five to ten times faster than standard response sprinklers. This quick response enables the Model Fl FR and Fl FR Recessed sprinklers to apply water to a fire much faster than standard sprinklers of the same temperature rang. The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a precisely manu- factured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially con- structed to provide fast thermal response. The balance of parts are made-of brass,, copper and beryllium nickel. At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains 'the 'fluid in both the liquid and vapor phases. The vapor phase can be seen as a small bubble. As heat is applied, the liquid ax- Upright Pendent Vertical Sidewall Conventional Horizontal Sidewall Recessed Pendent HSW 1 Deflector (Model FP Shown) pands, forcing the bubble smaller and smaller as the liquid pressure increases. Continued heating forces the liquid to push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter, opening the waterway and allowing the deflector to distrib- ute the discharging water. Application Quick response sprinklers are used in fixed fire protec- tion systems: Wet, Dry, Deluge or Preaction. Care must be exercised that the orifice size, temperature rating, deflector style and sprinkler type are in accordance with the latest published standards of the National Fire Protection Asso- ciation or the approving Authority Having Jurisdiction. Quick response sprinklers are intended for installation as specified in NFPA 13, FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheet 2-8N or other applicable-standards. Quick response sprinklers and standard response sprinklers should not be intermixed.
