Review Comments
Poinsettia Ridge, Tract 16596, Carlsbad, California
Field verify that the noted static pressure of 89.0 psi exists at the highest pad elevation, as there
was no indication of where this pressure was applicable.
Ball valves on Watts 007 shown in riser diagram should be locked in the open position, as
control valves which can isolate the fire sprinkler system independent of the domestic system are
not allowed without being locked.
General notes 1 and 9 on sheet 1 are in error as they reference the 2007 edition of NFPA-13D,
which has not been adopted by Carlsbad Fire. These notes were redlined on the plans.
The riser detail indicates a 2" water meter, which seems unlikely for single family residences of
this size. Field verify that at least a 1" diameter meter is installed.
Sheet 3 comments
The spacing in the master bedroom and family room is at 18', and requires 17 gpm per the
manufacturer's requirements. The calculations use the proper flow, and the hydraulic design
sticker has been redlined.
The "garage" hydraulic calculations were not flowing the proper reference points, and have been
discarded. (References 16/20 vs. 27/28)
Sheet 4 comments.
The spacing in the family room is at 18', and requires 17 gpm per the manufacturer's
requirements. The calculations use the proper flow, and the hydraulic design sticker has been
redlined.
8. Same as comment #6. (References 14/17 vs. 29/30)
The following comments are for your information and will appear on every residential sprinkler review.
The alarm bell must be capable of being heard, above background noise, with doors closed, in all living areas of the
residence. This will be checked at final acceptance.
Pressure required at base of riser will be verified to be available at time of final acceptance.
Sprinkler heads are omitted from bathroom areas under 55 SF in area with noncombustible plumbing fixtures.
Fixtures will be verified at final acceptance.
Sprinkler head blockage or pattern disruption caused by beams or other obstructions will be verified to not exist at
final acceptance inspection.
Sprinkler heads should be located the proper distance from heat sources (stoves, kitchen ranges, fireplaces, heat
diffusers, etc.) This will be checked at final acceptance inspection.
Sprinkler heads located in an unconditioned space (garage, water heater closet, etc.) should be fast response type
with an appropriate temperature rating, commercial heads are acceptable in these areas.
All exposed piping shall be black steel or copper. Concealed piping can be CPVC plastic.

1. DESCRIPTION
Viking Freedom® Residential Concealed Pendent Sprinkler VK457 is a small high-
sensitivity solder fink and lever residential sprinkler designed for installation on con-
cealed pipe systems where the appearance of a smooth ceiling is desired. The orifice
design, with a K-Factor of 4.9 (70.6 metric*), allows the sprinkler's efficient use of
available water supplies for the hydraulically designed fire-protection system. The
fast response operating element and special deflector combine speed of operation
and areas of coverage to meet residential sprinkler standards.
The sprinkler is pre-assembled with a threaded adapter for installation with a low-
profile small-diameter cover assembly installed flush to the ceiling. The two-piece
design allows installation and testing of the sprinkler prior to installation of the cover
plate. The push-on", 'thread-off' design of the concealed cover plate assembly allows
easy installation of the cover plate after the system has been tested and the ceiling
finish has been applied, while also providing up to 1/2' (12.7 mm) of vertical adjustment.
The cover assembly can be removed and reinstalled, allowing temporary removal of
ceiling panels without taking the sprinkler system out of service or removing the sprinkler.

INSTALLATION
Refer to appropriate NFPA Installation Standards
OPERATION
During fire conditions, when the temperature around the sprinkler approaches its operating temperature, the cover plate detaches,
releasing the deflector. Continued heating of the exposed sprinkler causes the fusible element to disengage releasing the sealing
assembly. Water flowing through the sprinkler orifice strikes the deflector, forming a uniform spray pattern over a specific area of
coverage determined by the water supply pressure at the sprinkler to extinguish or control the fire.
INSPECTIONS, TESTS AND MAINTENANCE
Refer to NFPA 25 for Inspection, Testing and Maintenance requirements.

Model Fl FR Vertical Sidewall Sprinklers.
Product Description
Reliable Models Fl FR and El FR Recessed Sprinklers are
quick response sprinklers which combine the durability of a
standard sprinkler with the attractive low profile of a decorative
sprinkler.
The Models Fl FR and Fl FR Recessed automatic sprinklers
utilize a 3.0 mm frangible glass bulb. These sprinklers have
demonstrated response times in laboratory tests which are
five to ten times faster than standard response sprinklers. This
quick response enables the Model Fl FR and Fl FR Recessed
sprinklers to apply water to a fire much faster than standard
sprinklers of the same temperature rang.
The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled amount
of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a precisely manu-
factured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially con-
structed to provide fast thermal response. The balance of
parts are made-of brass,, copper and beryllium nickel.
At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains 'the 'fluid
in both the liquid and vapor phases. The vapor phase can
be seen as a small bubble. As heat is applied, the liquid ax-

pands, forcing the bubble smaller and smaller as the liquid
pressure increases. Continued heating forces the liquid to
push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter,
opening the waterway and allowing the deflector to distrib-
ute the discharging water.
Application
Quick response sprinklers are used in fixed fire protec-
tion systems: Wet, Dry, Deluge or Preaction. Care must be
exercised that the orifice size, temperature rating, deflector
style and sprinkler type are in accordance with the latest
published standards of the National Fire Protection Asso-
ciation or the approving Authority Having Jurisdiction.
Quick response sprinklers are intended for installation as
specified in NFPA 13, FM Global Loss Prevention Data
Sheet 2-8N or other applicable-standards. Quick response
sprinklers and standard response sprinklers should not be
intermixed.

Installation
Quick response sprinklers are intended for installation as
specified in NFPA 13, FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheet
2-8N or other applicable standards. Quick response sprin-
klers and standard response sprinklers should not be inter-
mixed.
The Model Fl FR Recessed Quick Response Sprinklers are to
be installed as shown. The Model Fl or F2 Escutcheons illus-
trated are the only recessed escutcheons to be used with the
Model Fl FR Sprinklers. The use of any other recessed escutch-
eon will void all approvals and negate all warranties.
When installing Model Fl FR Sprinklers, use the Model D Sprin-
kler Wrench. When installing Model Fl FR Recessed Pendent or
Sidewall Sprinklers, use the Model GFR1 Sprinkler Wrench. Any
other type of wrench may damage These sprinklers.
Glass bulb sprinklers have orange bulb protectors to minimize
bulb damage during shipping, handling and installation. RE-
MOVE THIS PROTECTION AT THE TIME THE SPRINKLER
SYSTEM IS PLACED IN SERVICE FOR FIRE PROTECTION. Re-
moval of the protectors before this time may leave the bulb vul-
nerable to damage. RASCO wrenches are designed to install
sprinklers when covers are in place. REMOVE PROTECTORS
BY UNDOING THE CLASP BY HAND, DO NOT USE TOOLS
TO REMOVE THE PROTECTORS.

Maintenance
The Models F1FR and F1FR Recessed Sprinklers
should be inspected quarterly and the sprinkler system
maintained in accordance with NFPA 25. Do not clean
sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia or any other
cleaning fluids. Remove dust, by using a soft brush or gen-
tle vacuuming. Remove any sprinkler which has been
painted (other than factory applied) or damaged in any
way. A stock of spare sprinklers should be maintained to
allow quick replacement of damaged or operated sprin-
klers. Prior to installation, sprinklers should be maintained
in the original cartons .and packaging until used to mini-
mize the potential for damage to sprinklers that would
cause improper operation or non-operation.

Plastic paddles slip over the actuating lever and are securely
fastened with one screw. The handy depth gauge insures the proper
installation depth and clearance of the detector to the tee.
Construction. The WFDTH includes a durable and tamper resistant
enclosure. Its sealed retard assures that the delay mechanism is
not contaminated by dut and dirt when the cover is removed. The
