Pendent Sprinklers General Description The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Upright and Pendent Sprinklers are decorative glass bulb sprinklers designed for use in light or ordinary hazard occupancies. They are intended for use in automatic sprinkler systems designed in accord- ance with standard installation rules (e.g., NFPA 13) for a maximum cover- age area of 400 ft2 (37,2 m2), as com- pared to the maximum coverage area of 130 ft2 (12,1 m2) for standard cover- age sprinklers used in ordinary haz- ard occupancies or 225 ft2 (20,6 m2) for standard coverage sprinklers used in light hazard occupancies. The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Sprin- klers feature a UL and C-UL Listing that permits their use with unob- structed or non-combustible ob- structed ceiling construction as de- fined and permitted by NFPA 13, as well as a specific application listing for use under concrete tees. The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Sprinklers have been fire tested to compare their per- formance to that of standard coverage spray sprinklers. These tests have shown that the protection provided is equal to or more effective than stand- ard coverage spray sprinklers. Corrosion resistant coatings, where applicable, are utilized to extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be ob- tained when exposed to corrosive at- mospheres. Although corrosion resis- tant coated sprinklers have passed the standard corrosion tests of the appli- cable approval agencies, the testing is not representative of all possible cor- rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability of these corrosion resistant coatings for any given corrosive environment. The effects of ambient temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be con- sidered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of the chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. WARNINGS The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Sprinklers described herein must be installed and main- tained in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities hav- ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the integrity of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted relative to any questions. Other patents are pending with regard to other design features. Operation The glass bulb contains a fluid which expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, which then allows the sprin- kler to activate and flow water. Design Criteria The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Sprinklers must only be installed in accordance with the ap- plicable UL and C-UL Listing or FM Approval requirements as indicated below. Only the Style 30 or 40 Re- cessed Escutcheon is to be used for recessed installation, as applicable (Ref. Table A, B, and C). UL and C-UL Listing Requirements The Series EC-1 1 and EC-1 4 Sprin- klers may be used for the coverage areas shown in Table D, based on maintaining the minimum specified flow rate as a function of coverage area and hazard group for all of the sprinklers in the design area. With respect to heat sensitivity, the Series EC-il and EC-14 Sprinklers are permitted to be used with unob- structed or non-combustible ob- structed ceiling construction as de- fined and permitted by NFPA 13. For example: Unobstructed, combustible or non- combustible, ceiling construction with a deflector to ceiling/roof deck distance of 1 to 12 inches (25 to 300 mm). Obstructed, noncombustible, ceiling construction with a deflector location below structural members of 1 to 6 inches (25 to 150 mm) and a maxi- mum deflector to ceiling/roof deck distance of 22 inches (550 mm). The minimum allowable spacing be- tween the Series EC-1 1 and EC-1 4 Sprinklers, to prevent cold solder- ing, is 8 feet (2,4 m) for upright sprin- klers and 9 feet (2,7 m) for pendent sprinklers. The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Sprin- klers are to be installed in accord- ance with all other requirements of NFPA 13 for extended coverage up- right and pendent sprinklers. UL and C-UL Specific Application Listing Requirements For Installation Under Concrete Tees The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Upright Sprinklers (TY5137 & TY6137) have a UL and C-UL Specific Application Listing for use under concrete tees when in- stalled as follows: The stems of the concrete tee con- struction must spaced at less than 7.5 feet (2,3 m) on center but more than 3 feet (0,9 m) on center. The depth of the concrete tees must not exceed 30 inches (762 mm). The maximum permitted concrete tee length is 32 feet (9,8 m); however, where the concrete tee length ex- ceeds 32 feet (9,8 m), non-combus- tible baffles, equal in height to the depth of the tees, can be installed so that the space between the tees does not exceed 32 feet (9,8 m) in length. The sprinkler deflectors are to be located in a horizontal plane at or above 1 inch (25,4 mm) below the bottom of the concrete tee stems. When the sprinkler deflectors are located higher than a horizontal plane 1 inch (251,4 mm) beneath the bottom of the concrete tee stems, the obstruction to sprinkler dis- charge criteria requirements of NFPA 13 for extended coverage up- right sprinklers applies. FM Approval Requirements The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex- tended Coverage Sprinklers are to be installed in accordance with the appli- cable Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Data Sheet for limited use in buildings of specific roof construction and for the protection of certain specific ordinary hazard (non-storage and/or non-flam- mable or combustible liquid) occupan- cies. Information provided in the FM Loss Prevention Data Sheets relate to, but are not limited to, hydraulic design, ceiling slope and obstructions, mini- mum and maximum allowable spac- ing, and deflector-to ceiling distance. Installation The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Sprin- klers must be installed in accordance with the following instructions: NOTES Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 135°F/57°C to 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) for the 286°F/141C temperature ratings. A leak tight 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a torque of 10 to 20 ft.lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maxi- mum of 30 ft.lbs. (40.7 Nm) of torque is to be used to install sprinklers. Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leak- age or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in- sufficient adjustment in an Escutcheon Plate by under- or over-tightening the Sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Step 1. The sprinkler must be installed with the deflector parallel to the mount- ing surface. Pendent sprinklers must be installed in the pendent position, TFP22O Page 5 of 8 2-7/8 DIA. 1/2±1/8 (73,0 mm) 1/2°(12,7mm) (12,7±3,2 mm) 2-1/4' DIA. 1/4(6,4 mm) FACE OF (57,2 mm) SPRINKLER FITTING (3,2 mm) MOUNTING MOUNTING SURFACE PLATE CLOSURE - 1-3/8" (34,9 mm) 1-1/8" (28,6 mm) FIGURE 2 SERIES EC-1 1 AND EC-14 RECESSED PENDENT SPRINKLER ASSEMBLY WITH TWO-PIECE 1/2 INCH TOTAL ADJUSTMENT STYLE 30 RECESSED ESCUTCHEON 2-7/8" DIA. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi- fied sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installation Section). Frequent visual inspections are rec- ommended to be initially performed for corrosion resistant coated sprinklers, after the installation has been com- pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor- rosion resistant coating. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25 should suffice; however, instead of in- specting from the floor level, a random sampling of close-up visual inspec- tions should be made, so as to better determine the exact sprinkler condi- tion and the long term integrity of the corrosion resistant coating, as it may be affected by the corrosive conditions present. The owner is responsible for the in- spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and de- vices in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. The in- stalling contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted relative to any questions. It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service. The Model GB-20 OR Sprinkler incorporates a specially designed deflector that provides a much greater area of coverage than most commercial sprinklers. A two (2) piece recessed escutcheon assembly that provides for 3/1 (9.5mm) of field adjustment is available. The Model GB-20 OR has a nominal K-factor of 7.8 (112.5 metric), a maximum temperature rating of 1550F/68°C, and a maximum working pressure of 175 psi(12.1 bar). The Model GB-20 OR is available in three standard finishes, chrome plated, factory brass and white painted. Its mating escutcheon plate is available in three standard finishes, chrome plated, brass plated and white painted with additional special painted finishes available. Operation: The glass bulb capsule operating mechanism contains a heat-sensitive liquid that expands upon application of heat. At the rated temperature, the frangible capsule ruptures, thereby releasing the orifice seal. The sprinkler then discharges water in a pre-designed spray pattern to control or extinguish the fire. For specific listing requirements, see the appropriate information contained in this brochure. Deviations from these requirements and standards or any alteration to the sprinkler itself will void any warranty made by Central Sprinkler Company. In addition, installation must also meet local government provisions, codes, and standards as applicable. The system piping must be properly sized to ensure the minimum required flow rate at the sprinkler. Check for the proper model, style, orifice size, and temperature rating prior to installation. Install sprinklers after the piping is in place to avoid mechanical damage; replace any damaged units. Wet pipe systems must be protected from freezing. Refer to the Installation section of Central Bulletins on the Model A-i Dry Pendent Sprinklers for use in dry pipe sprinkler installations. Upon completion of the installation, the system must be tested per recognized standards. In the event of a thread leak, remove the unit, apply new pipe joint compound or tape, and reinstall. Installation Sequence Step 1. The unit must be installed in the pendent position. Step 2. The face of the sprinkler fitting should be installed a nominal 9Ae" ± /16(14.3 mm ± 4.8 mm) behind the ceiling line as shown in the installation diagram on page two. Adjustments may be made via the push-on escutcheon plate to compensate for variations in the fitting. Do not use the push-on escutcheon plate to hold the unit in position. The sprinkler will function properly only when the system piping is anchored to the building structure. Otherwise reaction forces from system initiation could alter the sprinkler alignment and disrupt the pattern. Step 3. Use only a non-hardening pipe joint compound or Teflon* tape Apply only to the male threads. Step 4. Hand tighten the sprinkler into the fitting. Use a Central Combination Sprinkler Wrench for pendent sprinklers and a GB-20 Wrench for pendent or recessed pendent styles, to tighten the unit into the fitting. A leak-tight joint requires only 7 to 14 ft.-lbs.(9.5t0 19.0 Nm) of torque; a tangential force of 14 to 28 lbs.(62.3 to 124.5 N) delivered through a 6" (150 mm)handle will *Teflon is a trademark of the DuPont Corp. deliver adequate torque. Torque levels over 21 ft.-Ibs.(28.6 Nm) may distort the orifice seal, resulting in leakage Step 5. To install the escutcheon plate, align it with and press it over the sprinkler body until the outer edge of the escutcheon meets the mounting surface. CAUTION: Do not wrench or turn the deflector, as this action may damage the sprinkler and cause it to leak under pressure. Special care must be taken when installing with a CPVC system. Sprinklers must be installed after the CPVC manufacturer's recommended setting time for the primer and cement to ensure that neither accumulate within the sprinkler. Special care must be taken when installing with a copper system. Sprinklers must be installed only after the inside of the sprinkler drop and associated fittings have been wire brushed to remove any flux. Residual flux can cause corrosion and in extreme cases can impair proper sprinkler operation. Care & - J Maintenance Sprinklers must be handled care- fully. They must not be transported or stored where ambient temperature may exceed 1 00°F/380C. For best results, store them in a dry, cool location in the original shipping package. Do not install sprinklers that have been dropped or visibly damaged. Sprinklers must never be painted, coated, plated, or altered in any other way from manufactured condition or they may not function properly. Any sprinklers altered in such a manner must be replaced. The owner is responsible for the proper operating condition of all fire protection devices and accessories. The NFPA standard 25 entitled, "Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems", contains guidelines and minimum maintenance requirements. Furthermore, the local Authority Having Jurisdiction may have addi- tional regulations and requirements for maintenance, testing, and inspec- tion that must be obeyed. It is advisable to have sprinkler systems inspected regularly by a qualified inspection service. Length of time between such inspections can vary due to accessibility, ambient atmosphere, water supply, and site activity. Do not attempt to re-assemble or otherwise reuse a sprinkler that has operated. Replace any sprinkler exhibiting corrosion or damage; always use new sprinklers of the same type and temperature rating as replacements. Because the discharge pattern is critical to protection of life and property, nothing should be hung or attached to the sprinkler unit that ©1998 central Sprinkler Company Printed in U.S.A. would disrupt the pattern. Such obstructions must be removed. In the event that construction has altered the original configuration, additional sprinklers should be installed to maintain the protection level. Do not attempt to replace sprinklers without first removing the fire protec- tion system from service. Be certain to secure permission from all Authori- ties Having Jurisdiction, and notify all personnel who may be affected during system shutdown. A fire watch during maintenance periods is a recommended precaution. To remove the system from service mode, first refer to the system operating guide and valve instruc- tions. Drain water and relieve the pressure in the system piping. Remove the existing unit and install the replacement, using only the special sprinkler wrench. Be certain to match model, style, orifice, and temperature rating. A fire protection system that has been shut off after an activation should be returned to service immedi- ately. Inspect the entire system for damage and replace or repair as necessary. Sprinklers that did not operate but were subjected to corro- sive elements of combustion or excessive temperatures should be inspected, and replaced if need be. The Authority Having Jurisdiction will detail minimum replacement require- ments and regulations. Guarantee: Central Sprinkler Company will repair and/or replace any products found to be defective in material or workmanship within a period of one year from the date of shipment.
