The Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly con-: ceals the sprinkler operating compo- nents above the ceiling. The flat profile of the Cover Plate provides the optimum aesthetically appealing sprinkler design. Additionally, the concealed design of the Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Con- cealed Pendent Sprinklers provides 1/2 inch (12,8 mm) vertical adjustment. This adjustment provides a measure of flex- ibility when cutting fixed pipe drops. The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Perident Sprinklers are in- tended for use in the following systems: per NFPA 13D, wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for one- and two- family dwellings and mobile homes; per NFPA 13R, wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for residential oc- cupancies up to and including four stories in height; and per NFPA 13, wet pipe sprinkler sys- tems for the residential portions of any occupancy. IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the "INSTALLER WARNING" that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and in- stallation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its components and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinkler has a 4.9 (60,5) K-factor that provides the required residential flow rates at reduced pres- sures, enabling smaller pipe sizes and water supply requirements. This sprinkler has been designed with heat sensitivity and water distribution characteristics proven to help in the con- trol of residential fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers are shipped with a Disposable Protective Cap. The Protective Cap protects the sprinkler during ceiling installation or finish. After ceiling installation is com- plete, the Protective Cap is removed and the Cover Plate/Retainer Assem- bly is installed. Removing the Protec- tive Cap is required for proper sprinkler performance. Lu.1g(.q The Series LFll Residential Rat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (7-Y2524) described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this doc- ument and with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Associa- tion, in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. Owners are responsible for maintaining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. At this point, the Deflector, sup- ported by the Guide Pins, drops down to its operated position. The Solder Link Element of the Sprinkler! Support Cup Assembly is comprised of two link halves that are soldered togeth- er with a thin layer of solder. When the rated temperature is reached, the sol- der melts and the two link halves sepa- rate, allowing the sprinkler to activate and flow water. 1 Registered trademark of Dupont Design Criteria The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFll Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2524) are UL and C-UL Listed for installation in ac- cordance with the following criteria. When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, re- fer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufacturer's recommendations that may be accept- able to the Authority Having Jurisdiction. The Series LFII Residential Rat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers must not be used in applications where the air pressure above the ceiling is greater than that below. Down drafts through the Support Cup can delay sprinkler op- eration in a fire situation. System Type Only wet pipe systems may be utilized. Hydraulic Design Table A provides the minimum required sprinkler flow rate for systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required dis- charge from each of the total number of "design sprinklers" as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: flow rates given in Table A for NFPA 13D and 13R as a function of tem- perature rating and the maximum al- lowable coverage area minimum discharge of 0.1 6PM/ sq. ft. over the "design area" com- prised of the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers for actual cov- erage areas protected by the four sprinklers Obstruction To Water Distribution Locate sprinklers in accordance with the obstruction rules of NFPA for residential sprinklers as well as obstruction criteria described within TYCO technical data sheet TFP490. Operational Sensitivity Install sprinklers relative to the ceiling mounting surface as shown in Figure 3. Sprinkler Spacing The minimum spacing between sprin- klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprin- klers cannot exceed the length of the coverage area (Table A) being hydrau- lically calculated; for example, a maxi- mum of 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. cov- erage area or 20 feet for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area. 2-1/2' DIA. Damage to the Solder Link Element dur- ing installation can be avoided by han- dling the sprinkler by the Support Cup only; that is, do not apply pressure to the Solder Link Element (Figure 1). Obtain a leak-tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint by applying a minimum-to-maxi- mum torque of 7 to 14 ft-lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). Higher levels of torque can distort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leak- age or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in- sufficient adjustment in the Cover Plate! Retainer Assembly by under- or over- tightening the sprinkler. Re-adjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Install pendent sprinklers in the pendent position, with the center- line of the sprinkler perpendicular to the mounting surface. Remove the Protective Cap. With pipe-thread sealant applied to the pipe threads,. and using the W-Type 18 Wrench shown in Figure 2, install and tighten the Sprinkler! Support Cup Assembly into the fit- ting. The W-Type 18 Wrench ac- cepts a 1/2 inch ratchet drive. Replace the Protective Cap by pushing it upwards until it bottoms out against the Support Cup. The Protective Cap helps prevent dam- age to the Deflector and Guide Pins during ceiling installation and/ or during application of the finish coating of the ceiling. As long as the protective Cap re- mains in place, the system is con- sidered 'Out Of Service". After the ceiling has been corn- diameter clearance hole and in preparation for installing the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly, remove and discard the Protective Cap, and verify that the Deflector moves up and down freely. If the Sprinkler has been damaged and the Deflector does not move up and down freely, replace the entire Sprinkler assembly. Do not attempt to modify or repair a damaged sprinkler. Screw on the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly until its flange contacts the ceiling. Do not continue to screw on the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly such that it lifts a ceiling panel out of its normal position. If the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly cannot be engaged with the Mounting Cup or the Cover Plate/Retainer As- sembly cannot be engaged sufficiently to contact the ceiling, the Sprinkler Fitting must be repositioned. Care and Maintenance The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFll Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinkler (TY2524) must be maintained and serviced in accordance with the following instructions. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it con- trols, obtain permission to shut down the affected fire protection system from the proper authorities and notify all person- nel who maybe affected by this action. When properly installed, there is a nomi- nal 1/8 inch (3,2 mm) air gap between the lip of the Cover Plate and the ceil- ing, as shown in Figure 3. This air gap is necessary for proper operation of the sprinkler by allowing heat flow from a fire to pass below and above the Cover Plate to help assure appropriate release of the Cover Plate in a fire situation. If the ceiling needs repainting after sprinkler installation, exercise care to ensure that the new paint does NOT seal off any of the air gap. Failure to do so may impair sprinkler operation. Absence of a Cover Plate can delay the sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Do not pull the Cover Plate relative to the Enclosure. Separation may result. Exercise care to avoid damage to sprin- klers before, during, and after installa- tIGA other- wise alter automatic sprinklers after they leave the factory. Never repaint factory-painted Cover Plates. When necessary, replace cover plates with factory-painted units. Non- factory applied paint can adversely de- lay or prevent sprinkler operation in the event of afire. Replace sprinklers that: were damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twisting, wrench slippage, or the like. were modified or over-heated. are leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion. Responsibility lies with owners for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association (for example, NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Contact the install- ing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer regarding any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are rec- ommended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspec- tion Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes. The 1-Inch (DN25) Valve is intended for NFPA 13D system needs, whereas the 2-Inch (DN50) Valve is intended for systems designed in accordance with either NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. When a fire sprinkler operates, the Model RSV-1 Residential Shut-Off Valve automatically shuts off water flow to the domestic system and di- verts the available water supply to the fire sprinkler system. Consequently, when the Model RSV-1 Valve is uti- lized, the system designer does not need to add the domestic flow de- mand to the fire sprinkler system flow demand, as would otherwise be re- quired by NFPA 13R. Consider use of the Model RSV-1 Residential Shut-Off Valve when either the water supply cannot adequately provide for both the domestic design demand and the fire sprinkler flow de- mand, or it is necessary to increase the effectiveness of the fire sprinkler system by automatically shutting off the domestic flow. The Model RSV-1 Residential Shut- Off Valve maximizes the effective use of an existing water supply. Therefore, in areas with limited water supplies, it may eliminate the need to add costly pumps, pressurized reservoirs, or elec- trically operated domestic shut-off valves. The Model RSV-1 Valve has a built-in check valve in the fire sprinkler system outlet that eliminates the need for a separate check valve. Also, the Model RSV-1 Valve automatically re- sets, thereby eliminating the need for valve disassembly after a fire sprinkler system test or operation. NOTICE The Model RSV-1 Residential Shut-Off Valves described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the integrity of this device. Owners are responsible for maintaining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted relative to any questions. Technical Data Approvals The 1-Inch (DN25) Model RSV-1 Resi- dential Shut-Off Valve is UL and C-UL Listed and NSF-61 Annex G Approved. It is suitable for use in water supply arrangements for residential fire sprin- kler systems designed per NFPA 13D. The 2-Inch (DN50) Model RSV-1 Resi- dential Shut-Off Valve is UL and C-UL Listed and NSF-61 Annex G Approved. The minimum single sprinkler flow rate of 8 GPM (30,5 LPM), required for use with the 2-Inch (DN50) Model RSV-1 Valve, does not take precedence over any more hydrau- lically demanding single sprinkler flow rate specified for the residential sprinklers in use. Figure 1 shows the typical installation arrangement. Refer to the Installation section for addition- al design considerations. Local regulations concerning pub- lic water supplies may require a backflow prevention device. The de- sign of the Model RSV-1 Residential Shut-Off Valve anticipates that the backflow prevention device will be located in the water supply upstream of the Model RSV-1 Valve as shown in Figure 1. Should local regulations require the backflow prevention de- vice to be located in the fire sprinkler line downstream of the Model RSV-1 Valve, a by-pass per Figure 2 must be installed. L'L.)IL.I Do not install a check valve between the Model RSV-1 Residential Shut-Off Valve and the fire sprinklers unless a by-pass per Figure 2 is installed. Installing a by- pass disables performance of the Model RSV-1 Valve as a check valve. Water Supply Requirements 1-Inch (DN25) Valve In order for the 1-Inch (DN25) Model RSV-1 Valve to operate automati- cally upon sprinkler operation, the fire sprinkler system from the water main to the most hydraulically re- mote sprinkler must be designed to provide a minimum single sprinkler flow of 12.5 GPM (47,3 LPM) when the supply pressure at the main is at its minimum expected value. The minimum single sprinkler flow rate of 12.5 GPM (47,3 LPM), re- quired for use with the 1-Inch (DN25) Model RSV-1 Valve, does not take precedence over any more hydrau- lically demanding single sprinkler flow rate specified for the residential sprinklers in use. When performing hydraulic design calculations for the fire sprinkler system, you need not account for the trickle flow through the 1-Inch (DN25) Model RSV-1 Valve By- Pass Restriction into the domestic system. For the 1-Inch (DN25) Model RSV-1 Valve, the maximum water supply service line is 1 inch (DN25). 3-5/8 DIA. When the Model RSV-1 Valve is in the normal standby position as shown in Figures 7 and 8, the Piston Assembly, assisted by its Spring, is in the down position. With the Piston Assembly in the down position, the Fire Sprinkler Seal permits the Model RSV-1 Valve to perform as a conventional check valve. Also, with the Piston Assembly in the down position, water is avail- able on demand through the Domestic Flow Passage and out the Domestic Port. Upon operation and with a mini- mum design water flow—that is, 12.5 GPM (47,3 LPM) for the 1-inch Valve or 8 GPM (30,5 LPM) for the 2-Inch Valve—to the automatic residential fire sprinkler system, the Piston Assembly moves upward. With the Piston As- sembly in the up position, any water flow to the Domestic Port is diverted to the Fire Sprinkler Port. The contours of the Piston Assembly are specifically configured to minimize its upward movement except under the level of sustained fire sprinkler system flow resulting from operation of one or more fire sprinklers. How- ever, because most fire sprinkler sys- tems contain air pockets, the Piston Assembly tends to move momentarily upward when there is a surge in sup- ply pressure. The momentary opening and re-clos- ing of the Piston Assembly at the Fire Sprinkler Line Seal traps a portion of the pressure increase within the fire sprinkler system. Trapped pres- sure increases within the fire sprinkler system help to prevent a subsequent surge in the supply pressure from causing the water-flow detector to sig- nal a false alarm (unless a by-pass is installed per Figure 2). How- ever, when utilizing the Model RSV-1 Valve, you do not need to include ad- ditional hydraulic flow of the domestic system, when otherwise required by NFPA standards (NFPA 13R), to deter- mine the minimum possible residual (flowing) pressure available to the fire sprinkler system. For operation of the Model RSV-1 Res- idential Shut-Off Valve, you need only design the fire sprinkler system from the water supply main to the most hy- draulically remote sprinkler. Domestic flow does not require consideration. As long as the single sprinkler flow is equal to or greater than 12.5 GPM (47,3 LPM) for the 1-Inch Valve or 8 GPM (30,5 LPM) for the 2-Inch Valve when the supply pressure at the main is at its minimum expected value, the Model RSV-1 Valve automatically shuts off the domestic flow. After the Piston Assembly has moved to the full up position, only a small amount of water is permitted to trickle through the Internal By-Pass Restric- tion to the Domestic Port (Figures 7 and 8). The trickle flow through the Internal By-Pass Restriction permits the Model RSV-1 Valve to reset auto- matically after a sprinkler operation or test without draining the fire sprinkler system. When the Domestic Control Valve is closed, the Internal By-Pass Restric- tion allows the Supply and Domestic Port pressures to equalize and the Piston Assembly to move back down to the standby position. The maximum flow rate through the Internal By-Pass Restriction, when the Model RSV-1 Valve is in the op- erated position, is less than 1/4 GPM (0,9 LPM) for a typical residual (flow- ing) pressure of 40 psi (2,8 bar) at the inlet. Consequently, when performing hydraulic design calculations for the fire sprinkler system, you do not need to consider trickle flow through the Model RSV-1 Valve Internal By-Pass Restriction into the domestic system. Consult with the local water authorities cicerning local requirements that may apply to the arrangement of these components in the fire sprinkler system water supply. Figure 1 illustrates a typical instal- lation arrangement using the TYCO Model RSV-1 Residential Shut-Off Valve. The arrangement may need to be modified to meet the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction. However, the Model RSV-1 Valve must be installed in accordance with the following criteria. Note: For the 1-Inch (DN25) Valve, the maximum water supply service line is 1-Inch (DN25). Ensure that the water supply to the Model RSV-1 Valve is free of contami- nants and particles of a size greater than 1/8 inch (3,2 mm). Install the Model RSV-1 Valve verti- cally with the Supply Port at the bot- tom, the Fire Sprinkler Port at the top, and the Domestic Port at the side. Ensure that the arrows cast on the Body point in the direction of flow. A suitable clamp along the water supply riser piping is recommended to provide support for the weight of the Model RSV-1 Valve. Place a Domestic Control Valve be- tween the Model RSV-1 Valve and the domestic system. Position the inlet to the Domestic Control Valve within 12 inches of the Domestic Port of the Model RSV-1 Valve. The Drain and Flow Test Connection (Figure 1) is recommended to be a minimum 1/2 inch (DN15) size for systems per NFPA 13D, and it must be a minimum 1 inch (DN25) size for systems per NFPA 13R. Install an Alarm Test Connection with a test orifice equal to or less than the smallest K-factor sprinkler in the system downstream of the Waterflow Detector. Apply pipe-thread sealant sparingly only to the male pipe threads that are to be assembled to the three ports of the Model RSV-1 Valve. The use of a non-hardening pipe-thread sealant such as Teflon* is recommended. Valve Setting Procedure Perform steps 1 through 9 when initial- ly filling the fire sprinkler and domestic system piping with water or after a fire sprinkler operation (Figure 1). Close the Main Control Valve. Close the Domestic Control Valve and all water outlets in the domestic piping system. In addition to the Drain and Flow Test Connection in the fire sprinkler system, close all drain valves and replace all operated sprinklers as necessary. Partially open the Main Control Valve until the sound of flowing water just begins, then leave the Main Control Valve in the partially open position. After the fire sprinkler system pres- sure gauge indicates approximately the same pressure as the supply pressure gauge, fully open the Main Control Valve. Open the highest elevation outlet on the domestic system. Partially open the Domestic Control Valve until the sound of flowing water begins. Allow the domestic piping to fill slowly with water. Close the highest elevation water outlet on the domestic system when unaerated water begins to flow. Completely open the Domestic Control Valve, then check that the domestic system is properly pressurized by verifying that at least three water outlets in the domestic system can flow full at the same time. If the water outlets flow fully, the Model RSV-1 Valve is set and ready for service. Close the water outlets on the domestic system. If the water outlets do not flow fully, re-close the Domestic Con- trol Valve, wait a minimum of ten seconds, and ensure that there is no flow from the fire sprinkler sys- tem piping. Reopen the Domestic Control Valve, then recheck that the water outlets are flowing fully. Care and Maintenance The following inspection procedure for the TYCO Model RSV-1 Residential Shut-Off Valve must be performed as indicated, in addition to any specific requirements of the NFPA. Any impair- ment must be immediately corrected. Make no attempt to repair any Model RSV-1 Valve component in the field. The Model RSV-1 Valve is not field-repairable. If malfunction occurs, the entire unit must be replaced. The operational test and flow test procedures result in operation of the associated alarms, as well as an interruption of the domestic water supply service. You must notify the owner, building occupants, and the fire department, central station, or other signal station to which the alarms are connected. Before closing a fire protection system control valve for inspection or maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, obtain permission to shut down the affected fire protection system from the proper authorities and notify all personnel who may be affected by this action. After placing a fire protection system in service, notify the proper authorities and advise those responsible for monitoring proprietary and/or central station alarms. Responsibility lies with the owner for the inspection, testing, and mainte- nance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the appli- cable standards of the National Fire Protection Association (for example, NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any authority having jurisdiction. Contact the installing contractor or product manufacturer regarding any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are rec- ommended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspec- tion Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes and standards. *DuPont Registered Trademark TFP9BO Page 7 of 8 Operation Test Procedure Fully open two or three water outlets in the domestic piping system. To simulate a sprinkler operation, open the Alarm Test Connection of the fire sprinkler system. Verify that any alarms are operating and that the flow from the domestic water outlets decreases to no more than a trickle. Reset the Model RSV-1 Valve in ac- cordance with the Valve Setting Pro- cedure described in this data sheet. Flow Test Procedure While there is no water flowing in the domestic system, completely open the Drain and Flow Test Connection. While water is flowing, record the pressure reading on the fire sprin- kler system pressure gauge and then compare this reading to previ- ous readings. If there is a significant decrease in pressure since the last time the pressure reading was taken and this decrease is not due to a normally expected drop in the water supply pressure, an impairment may exist that should be immediately identified and corrected. Close the Drain and Flow Test Con- nection to allow the Model RSV-1 Valve to reset automatically. Automatic resetting occurs within ten seconds. After waiting ten seconds, completely open at least three water outlets in the domestic system and allow these outlets to flow simultaneously. If the water outlets flow fully, the Model RSV-1 Valve is set and ready for service. Close the water outlets on the domestic system. If the water outlets do not flow fully, close the Domestic Control Valve and verify that there is no flow from the fire sprinkler system piping, such as at the Inspector's Test Connec- tion. Wait a minimum often seconds. Re-open the Domestic Control Valve and then recheck that the domestic system water outlets are flowing full.
