The sensor is continually monitored to measure any change in its sensitivity due to the environment (dirt, smoke, temper- ature, humidity, etc.). It can give an advance indication to the control panel of the need for maintenance and can be specific as to where the maintenance is needed. If local regulations permit, then selected maintenance may be performed as op- posed to having to check the sensitivity of all sensors to as- sure overall performance when only a few may be dirty. Designed to operate in conjunction with the FCI Analog Addressable Fire Alarm controls, the ASD-PL sensor trans- mits an analog value representative of the sensitivity that can be used by the system to determine when maintenance is re- quired. Signal processing for alarm verification is built into the system to provide immunity to false alarms. The sensor is of plug-in construction and is directly inter- changeable in the same base with the ASD-IL analog ioniza- tion and ATD-L/ATD-PL thermal sensors. A wide variety of bases, with sounder, relay, etc., is available. Remote LED an- nunciator capability is also available as an optional acces- sory. The ASD-PL sensor is Listed for use inside ducts up to a velocity of 4,000 FPM. The unit is also available as the Model ASD-PTL, which features dual electronic thermistors that add reliable, low thermal lag 135° F fixed temperature sensing capability to the sensor. The sensor may be tested from the control panel, or func- tional testing can be performed by applying a test magnet ac- cording to the test procedures. An optional isolator base, Model 13224131, is also available. Installation of two of these isolator bases allows Style 7oper- ation for sensors and modules located electrically between the bases. INSTALLATION Place the sensor into the sensor base. Turn the sensor clockwise until the sensor locks into place. To use the tamper-proof feature, break the smaller tab on the base as shown in the installation instructions. In- stall the sensor. To remove the sensor from the base when using the tamper-proof feature, insert the blade of a small screwdriver into the hole on the side of the base and push the plastic lever away from the detector head. This will allow the sensor to be rotated counterclock- wise for removal. NOTE: The decorative ring must be removed in order to remove the head when using the tamper-proof feature. Refer to NFPA 72, Chapter 5-3 "Smoke Sensing Fire Detectors" for spacing, location of sensors and other guidelines. TESTING Sensors may be tested locally in the following ways: A. Place a test magnet against the sensor housing per the installation instructions. The sensor should go into alarm within 30 seconds. B. Field metering of sensor sensitivity may be performed with the aid of a voltmeter and Test Kit, P/N 1 19-9010N. For the complete procedure, refer to the instructions furnished with each test kit. C. Aerosol Generator - The Gemini Model 501 aerosol generator may be used to perform a functional test. Follow instructions in the generator instruction manual. D. Sensor sensitivity may be tested and measured at the control unit. Refer to the control panel operating manual. MAINTENANCE Cleaning programs should be adapted to the individ- ual environment in conformance with the National Fire Alarm Code, NFPA 72. We recommend, at the least, an annual cleaning of the unit. The sensor screen and cover assembly can be removed, revealing the sensing cham- ber. A vacuum cleaner can be used to remove dust from the screen, cover and sensing chamber. For the com- plete procedure, refer to the Installation and Mainte- nance Instructions furnished with each sensor. Electrical boxes must be 4-inches square by at least 1-1/2 inches deep - 2-1/8 inches is recommended. NOTE: A maximum space of 1/8 inch from the outside A78-124.01 edge of the electrical box to the inside edge of the drywall or ceiling tile is allowable. Figure 2. Mounting: Wiring Guidelines All wiring must be installed in compliance with the Na- tional Electrical Code and the local codes having jurisdic- tion and must not be of such length or wire size which would cause the base to operate outside of its published specifications. The conductors used to connect smoke sen- sors to control panels and accessory devices should be color coded to reduce the likelihood of wiring errors. Im- proper connections can prevent a system from responding properly in the event of a fire. For signal wiring (the wiring between interconnected sen- sors or modules), it is recommended that the wire be no smaller than 18 gauge (1.0 square mm). Wire sizes up to 12 gauge (2.5 square mm) may be used with the base. For best system performance, the power (± and -) wires and the communication circuit wires should be twisted pair or shielded cable installed in separate grounded conduit to protect the communication loop from electrical interfer- ence. Make wire connections by stripping about /8' of insulation from the end of the wire. Then, slide the bare end of the wire under the clamping plate, and tighten the clamping plate screw. Do NOT loop the wire under the clamping plate (See Figure 3). The zone wiring of the sensor base should be checked be- fore the sensor heads are installed. Check the wiring for continuity and polarity in the base. 0650-03-00 2 156-491-04 -__-__-_ ---------./------- OPTIONAL WIRING ----------/----- INTELLIGENT MONITOR MODULE 6 7 4 1 U.L. Disable the system undergoing mainte- nance to prevent unwanted alarms. Sensors and bases must be tested after installation and as an integral part of periodic maintenance. Test the B501BH as follows: Reverse the polarity of the external 24VDC supply. All B501BH bases on the loop should sound in approximately 10 seconds. Latch the sensor LED on from the control panel. That unit's B501BH should sound in approximately 10 seconds. NOTES: There is approximately a 10 second delay built into the B501BH before sounding. This delay is present whether the control signal comes from the sensor or from the ex- ternal power supply polarity being reversed. During automatic testing cycles, the horn may sound if the associated sensor is left in the test mode with LEDs latched on for more than 4 seconds. Therefore, it is nec- essary to complete testing of each sensor within this 4- second limit to prevent the horn from sounding. These versatile appliances will satisfy virtually all requirements for indoor, wall or ceiling mount applications. Strobe options for wall mount models include 15/75cd or Wheelock's patent pending Multi-Candela strobe with field selectable candela settings of 15, 30, 75 or 110cd. Ceiling mount models are available in 15, 30,75 or 100cd intensities. All models may be synchronized when used in conjunction with the Wheelock SM, DSM Sync Modules or the PS-1 2/24-8 Power Supply with Wheelock's Patented Sync Protocol. Synchronized strobes can eliminate possible restrictions on the number of strobes in the field of view. Wheelock's synchronized strobes offer an easy way to comply with ADA recommendations concerning photosensitive epilepsy as well as meeting the requirements of NFPA 72 (1999). Wheelock's Series RSS Strobes employ a Patented Integral Strobe Mounting Plate that can be mounted to a single gang, double gang, 40 square, 1 00m European backboxes or the SHBB surface backbox. If the flush backbox has side or top space between it and the finished wall, the NATP (Notification Appliance Trimplate) may be used. It provides an additional .65" of trim for the Appliance. An attractive cover plate is provided for a clean, finished appearance on all models. The Series RSSP Multi-Candela Strobe Plates are a cost effective way to retrofit required strobe appliances to bells, horns, chimes, multitones or speakers and easily mounts to standard 4" backboxes or for surface mount use with Wheelock's SBL2 surface backbox. Date Issued: MAY 24, 2001 Listing Expires June 30, 2002 Authorized By: BENHO Supervising Deputy Program Manager FIRE CONTROL INSTRUMENTS Model MS-2, MS-2H The MS-2 manual fire alarm stations are double action devices. These stations requires that the outer door be lifted to expose the actuation door which is then pulled forward to operate the alarm toggle switch. The actuation door is now locked in the readily observable "alarm" position. To reset the station, a key ( common to FCI control panels) must be inserted and turned 1/4 turn clockwise, opening the station. Closing the station resets the switch automatically. An optional breakglass rod is available for positive indica- tion of station operation. Model MS-213 (Presignal) Operation of the Model MS-21? presignal station is similar to that ofthe MS-2, with the addition of a key-operated switch mounted on the lower door. This switch may be used for 'general alarm" signaling. Model MS-2L, MS-2LP (Institutional) Operation of the Model MS-2L institutional station re- quires that a special key be used to release the actuation door before it can be operated. This lock may be keyed as required by the particular application. The MS-2LP features an addi- tional key-operated switch mounted on the lower door. Model MS-2-D (Multiple Contact) The MS-2-D features a DPST switch for multiple signaling via wire lead connections. Model MS-6 (Single Action) The MS-6 station is a single action device, requiring only the pulling of the action door to release the compressed button switch. It is available either with terminals (MS-6T) or wire leads (MS-6). The station resets in the same manner as the MS-2. The reset key is common to FCI control panels. Model MS-WS (Weatherproof) The surface mounted cast aluminum MS-WS station has a protective hood over the actuation door which offers genuine NEMA 3 weatherproof construction. The pull door is held in place by a breakglass rod and extends below the body of the station so it can be pulled outward to operate even if ice coated. The reset key is common to FCI control panels. The surface mount backbox is threaded for 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) conduit fittings both on top and bottom. MS SERIES NON-CODED, MANUAL FIRE ALARM STATIONS <E;:> I'.
