The provision requiring protection is found in NFPA 13 (Sprinkler Standard). Basically, the code requires that areas without sprinklers be void of combustibles unless such combustibles meet certain flame spread ratings for fire retardancy. Please contact your sprinkler designer. You may elect to cover the exposed wood with drywall to eliminate the problem of exposed wood in the area between the underside of the mezzanine deck and the drop ceiling. The only requirement that the wood needs to be fully covered is were a 'fire rated assembly' is required per CBC . We only have two stars that are require a 'fire rated assembly'; One at bldg. 'X' at grid line A-5 and one at bldg. 'Y' at grid line F-5. Since all our stairs, except the ones described above, serve occupancies less than the requirement of a rated exit assembly per CBC table 10-A we are not required to provide a rated wall assembly for these type of stairs. Hence rated wall assemblies not required, walls not required to be fully gyped. CBC 1005.3.1 CBC 1003.3.9 reference to CBC 606.4.2 for type V construction. CBC 606.4.2. Interior stairways may be constructed of any materials permitted by this code. Have the inspector call me on why is she is requiring this if you can not resolve this. Is this a code issue or a Carlsbad Fire code requirement? See details 10,15,20 and 25/A15.1. She claims that we can't have any exposed wood. She is referring to where the drywall stops above the ceiling. Is she correct when these buildings are type V non rated buildings? 5/9/2006 Message Page 2 of 2 Thanks, Ron Davis 5/9/2006
