The city recognizes the third-grade artists and awards certificates at a City Council meeting in May or June each year. At its July 14, 2025 meeting, the HPC is being asked to provide general feedback about the art contest and to discuss whether there are any opportunities to increase participation or earn more positive feedback in the future. Discussion The HPC sponsors an art contest, called “Drawing on Carlsbad’s Past,” for third graders in Carlsbad. This item was included in the 2024-2025 HPC Work Plan and is also featured in the 2025-2026 Work Plan. This year, the city received 19 artwork submissions from seven participating schools. All winners were acknowledged at a City Council presentation on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Two commissioners were present to introduce the students and to help pass out the award certificates. The selected artwork is currently on display at the Georgina Cole Library for the summer.
