steel and are intended for interior non corrosive applications.
U.S. Patent No. 4,880,063.
Application
The Reliable Model G4 .
Concealer® is the most versatile ,
concealed sprinkler available. It : provides the best form of fire pro-
tection while offering an attractive
appearance and l/2 (13mm) of
cover adjustment for ease of instal-
lation. The adjustable 1" NF inlet
versions have 1)" (38mm) of total
adjustment and also eliminates the need for a reducing cou-
pling. The small diameter Push-on/Thread-off cover plate
assembly is easily attached and blends into the ceiling, con-
cealing the most dependable fire protection available, an
automatic sprinkler system.
The Concealer® is designed for use where aesthetic ap-
pearance is important. Offices, hospitals, motels and res-
taurants are but a few of the applications where it can be
used. It is available in different orifice sizes allowing the de-
signer to optimize system performance, thereby achieving a
most efficient installation.
The Concealer® can eliminate the need for precise cutting
of drop nipples. The Push-on/Thread-off cover plate assem-
bly can be adjusted without tools so it mates accurately with
the ceiling. The fire protection system need not be shut
down to adjust or remove the cover plate assembly.
Product Description
The Reliable Model G4 Concealer® uses the proven
Model G fusible element in a standard style sprinkler frame
with a drop-down deflector. This assembly is recessed into
the ceiling and concealed by a flat cover plate. The
Push-on/Thread-off cover plate and sprinkler cup assem-
blies are held tight by a flexible tooth engagement to the
threaded cup. This threaded engagement provides ½"
(13mm) of cover adjustment. The flat cover plate is attached
to the skirt using an ordinary temperature classification sol-
der. This results in a strong cover plate assembly with an or-
dinary temperature rating, and an intermediate temperature
sprinkler which can be installed in 150°F (66°C) environ-
ments. When the ceiling temperature rises, the solder hold-
ing the cover plate to the skirt melts, the flat cover plate
released thus exposing the sprinkler inside to the rising am-
bient temperature.
The subsequent fusing of the sprinkler element opens the
waterway and causes the deflector to drop into position to
distribute the discharging water. Any secure engagement of
the threads between the cover plate and cup will assure that
the drop-down deflector is properly located below the ceil-
ing when a sprinkler operates.
The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc., 525 North MacQuesten Parkway, Mount Vernon, New York 10552
Installation
Do not install The Concealer® in ceilings which have positive
pressure in the space in the space above.
After a 2/ inch diameter hole is cut in the ceiling, the sprinkler
is to be installed with the Model G4 Wrench. The wrench has
drive tangs which insert into cup slots. When installing a sprin-
kler the wrench is first positioned into the sprinkler/cup assembly
until the wrench tangs engage drive slots in the top of the cup
(there are two sets of mating drive slots in the cup). The sprinkler
is then tightened into the pipe filling. When inserting or removing
the wrench from the sprinkler/cup assembly care should be
taken to prevent damage to the sprinkler. DO NOT WRENCH
ON ANY OTHER PARTOFTHE SPRINKLER/CUP ASSEMBLY.
The adjustable inlet versions are similar to the standard Model
G4 except that an addition 1" (25mm) of adjustment is provided
by means of a telescoping inlet section that threads in or out of a
stationary coupling reducer (either 1 male or 1 female) as shown
in Fig. 201 Fig. 3. These sprinklers must be installed before the
ceiling is in place, by wrenching on only the coupling reducer

hex flats. After the ceiling has been installed with holes for the
sprinkler, each telescoping inlet section is to be adjusted with the
G4 Wrench. Install the push-on/thread-off cover plate assembly
over the sprinkler by holding and pressing it straight up into the
cup. Final adjustment of each cover assembly is made by hand
turning it clockwise until it is tight against the ceiling.
Maintenance
The Model G4 Concealer® should be inspected quarteriy and
the sprinkler system maintained in accordance with NFPA 25.
Do not clean sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia or any
other cleaning fluids. Remove any sprinkler that has been
painted (other than factory applied) or damaged in any way. A
stock of spare sprinklers should be maintained to allow quick re-
placement of damaged or operated sprinklers. Prior to installa-
tion, sprinklers should be maintained in the original cartons and
packaging to minimize the potential for damage to sprinklers that
would cause improper operation or non-operation.

Product Description
Today's modern buildings demand that a sprin kler not
only provide the best fire protection but also achieve an
attractive appearance. Reliable's Model G Recessed
Sprinkler meets both criteria. It combines the fire fighting
ca pa bil ityofa proven sprin klerwith the smallest practi ca-
ble recessing unit. Its small profile does not disrupt the
over head aesthetics, and yet one verti cal glance up ward
gives a visual assurance of the finest in fire protection, an
automatic sprinkler system.
The Model G Recessed Sprinkler's threaded
two-piece construction makes initial field installation a
very easy task. It allows ceilings panels to be removed
without shutting' down the fire protection thus facilitating
maintenance of above ceiling services. The adjustable
one inch NPT in let versions have one and one half inches
of adjustment which eliminates both the normally re-
quired reducing coupling and the need to accurately cut
drop nipples. This sprin kler can be adjusted after the ceil-
ing is in place and even while the system is pressurized-
eliminating the final corrections to pipe hangers or ceil-
ings that might otherwise be required.
The Reliable Model G Automatic Sprinkler is the heart
of the Recessed Sprinkler. This sprinkler utilizesthecen-
ter strut solder in compression principle of construction.
The fusible alloy, captured in the cylinder of a small solder
capsule by stainless steel ball, acts as the trigger of the
sprin kler. When the fusible alloy melts, the sprin kler op er-
ating parts sprinkler free from the sprinkler clearing the
waterway and allowing the deflector to distribute the dis-charging water.
The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc., 525 North MacQuesten Parkway, Mount Vernon, New Yorki 0552
Installation
The Reliable Model G Recessed Sprinkler has been
designed with ease of installation in mind. A choice of
three inlets with up to one inch adjustment coupled with
the ½" (13mm) escutcheon adjustment enables most
system to be installed using pre-cut drop nipples. The
adjustment can be accomplished after the ceiling instal-
lation and while the system is pressurized thereby provid-
ing sprinkler protection before construction is completed.
The Non-Adjustable inlet version (Figure 1) Con sists of
the Reliable Model G Sprinkler with an attached cup re-
cessed in the cell ing. A cell ing hole of 21/211(67mm) di am-
eter is recommended.
The Ad just able in letversion uses the same sprin kleras
the Non-Adjustable inlet version uses the same sprinkler
as the Non-Adjustable in lettype exceptthe 1 of additional
adjustment is provided by a telescoping sprinkler inlet
section that threads in or out of a stationary Coupling Re-
ducer (either 1 male or 1 female) as shown in fig ures 2 or
3. The Sprin kler-Cup as sem bly comes attached to the in-
let Coupling Reducer Comes attached to the inlet Cou-
pling Reducer and is retained from separation past its
maximum adjustment length by a snap ring. This combi-
nation is simply installed after the system drop nipple, el-
bow or tee has been "roughed in" to the dimensions
shown in figures 2 or 3. Wrenching means are provided
by hex flats on the coupling reducer as depicted in the
figures-do not wrench on any other part of the sprinkler.
After the ceiling tiles have been cut and in stalled in place
(a 21/4" {57mm}hole is recommended), the sprinkler can
be adjusted using the RC-1 Concealed Wrench.
When using the wrench in this application, however,
do not over-torque beyond the adjustment stops.
Figure 4 shows a ½" NPT (R½) non-adjustable inlet
sprinkler, with the attached sprinkler cup combination in-
serted into the special Reliable Model RC-1 Installation
Wrench. This wrench must be used. The wrenching
pads of the sprinkler easily slip into the rectangular
cut-outs of thewrench astheoutside diameter locates the
threaded cup. A 1/2l (13mm) drive ratchet can then be
used for installation and tightening.
Figure 5 shows the removal of the wrench. Care
should be taken during this procedure to avoid hitting the
deflector with the wrench. The wrench should be lowered
until it clears the sprinkler. The installation completed by
threading the escutcheon on until it contacts the ceiling.
To avoid leaving smudge marks on the ceiling, the Reli-
able Model FEA Flush Sprinkle Escutcheon Wrench
should be used. See Bulletin 205
Note:
1. Use hex wrench on Coupling Reducer to tighten Ad-
justable Sprinkler into fittings. Do not use RC-1
Wrench for this purpose.
2 Do not install the Model G Recessed Sprinkler in ceil-
ings which have positive pressure in the space above.
Maintenance
The Model G Recessed Pendent Sprinklers should be
inspected quarterly and the sprinkler system maintained
in accordance with NFPA 20. Do not clean sprinklers with
soap and water, ammo niaor anyotherclean ing fluid. Re-
move any sprinkler that has been painted (other that fac -
tory applied) or damaged in any way. A stock of spare
sprinklers should be maintained to allow quick replace-
ment of damaged orop er ated sprinklers. Priorto in stal Ia-
tion, sprinklers should be maintained in the original
cartons and packaging until used to minimize the poten-
tialfor damage to sprinklers that would cause improper
operation or non-operation.

14.6 High Expansion Foam - Reduction to Ceiling Density.
A reduction in ceiling density to one-half that required for
Class I through Class IV commodities, idle pallets, or plastics
shall be permitted without revising the design area, but the
density shall be no less than 0.15 gpm/ft2 (6.1 mm/mm).
Chapter 15 Protection of Plastic and Rubber
Commodities That Are Stored Palletized,
Solid Piled, Bin Boxes, or Shelf Storage
15.1 General. This chapter shall apply to plastic and rubber
commodities that are stored palletized, solid pile, bin boxes,
or shelf storage. The requirements of Chapter 12 shall apply
unless modified by this chapter.
15.1.1 The minimum water supply requirements for a hy-
draulically designed occupancy hazard fire control sprinkler
system shall be determined by adding the hose stream allow-
ance from Table 15. 1.1 to the water supply for sprinklers. This
supply shall be available for the minimum duration specified
in Table 15.1.1. (See Section C.8.)
15.1.2* Storage Conditions.
15.1.2.1 The design of the sprinkler system shall be based on
those conditions that routinely or periodically exist in a build-
ing and create the greatest water demand. These conditions
include the following:
Pile height
Clearance
Pile stability
Array
15.2* Control Mode Density—Area Sprinkler Protection Crite-
ria for Palietized, Solid Piled, Bin Box, or Shelf Storage of
Plastic and Rubber Commodities.
15.2.1* Protection for plastic and rubber commodities shall
be in accordance with Section 15.2. The decision tree shown
in Figure 15.2.1 shall be used to determine the protection in
each specific situation, subjectto the following limitations:
Commodities that are stored palletized, solid piled, or in
bin boxes up to 25 ft (7.62 m) in height
Commodities that are stored in shelf storage up to 15 ft
(4.6 m) in height
15.2.2* Factors affecting protection requirements such as
closed/open array, clearance between storage and sprin-
klers, and stable/unstable piles shall be applicable only to
storage of Group A plastics. This decision tree also shall be
used to determine protection for commodities that are not
wholly Group A plastics but contain such quantities and ar-
rangements of the same that they are deemed more hazard-
ous than Class IV commodities.
15.2.3 Group B plastics and free-flowing Group A plastics
shall be protected in the same manner as a Class IV commod-
ity. (See Chapter 14 for protection of these storage commodities with
spray sprinklers.)
15.2.4 Group C plastics shall be protected in the same man-
ner as a Class III commodity. (See Chapter 14 for protection of these
storage commodities with spray sprinklers.)
15.2.5* Design areas and densities for the appropriate storage
configuration shall be selected from Table 15.2.5 (a) or Table
15.2.5(b) as appropriate. Columns A, B, C, D, and E corre-
spond to the protection required by the decision tree shown
in Figure 15.2.1.
15.2.6 The ceiling only protection criteria specified in Chap-
ter 17 for rack storage of plastic and rubber commodities shall
be permitted to be used for solid piled palletized storage of
the same commodity, at the same height and clearance.
15.2.7 For Table 15.2.5(a) and Table 15.2.5(b), the design
areas shall be as follows:
The area shall be a minimum of 2500 ft2 (232 m2).
Where Table 15.2.5(a) and Table 15.2.5(b) allow densities
and areas to be selected in accordance with Figure 13.2.1,
Curve 0H2, Curve EHI, and Curve EH2, any density area
from the curves in Figure 13.2.1 shall be permitted.
For closed arrays, the area shall be permitted to be re-
duced to 2000 ft2 (186 m2).
15.2.8 Interpolation of densities between storage heights
shall be required. Densities shall be based on the 2500 ft'
(232 m2) design area. The "up to" in Table 15.2.5(a) and
Table 15.2.5(b) is intended to aid in the interpolation of den-
sities between storage heights. Interpolation of ceiling/roof
heights shall not be permitted.
15.3 Large Drop Sprinklers and Specific Application Control
Mode Sprinklers for Palletized or Solid-Piled of Plastic and
Rubber Commodities.
15.3.1 Protection of palletized and solid-piled storage of un-
expanded plastic and expanded plastic commodities shall be
in accordance with Table 15.3.1 (a) or Table 15.3.1(b).
15.3.2 Protection shall be provided as specified in Table
15.3.1(a) and Table 15.3.1(b) or appropriate NFPA standards
in terms of minimum operating pressure and the number of
sprinklers to be included in the design area.

1. DESCRIPTION
The Viking Standard Response ELO Upright and Pendant Sprinklers are ther-
mosensitive glass bulb spray sprinklers available In several different finishes and
temperature ratings to meet design requirements, The special Polyester and Teflon
coatings can be used in decorative applications where colors are desired. In ad-
dition, these coatings have been Investigated for installation In corrosive atmOs.
pheres and are c1JLus listed as corrosion resistant as Indicated in the Approval
Chart. (Note: FM Global has no approval classification for Teflono and Polyester coat-
ings as corrosion resistant.)
The extra-lame ariflee orovldes oreater flaws at lower pressures than standard orifice
or large orific sprinklers. This feature allows reduced pipe sizing for hydraulically Upright Pendant
calculated sprinkler systems, which require high densities of water. Viking Standard
Response Extra-Large Orifice Sprinklers may eliminate the need for a fire pump or reduce the size of the pump If It Is required, On
existing systems, replacing large orifice sprinklers with extra-large orifice sprinklers may provide the higher densities required to
allow an Increase in the hazard classification of an occupancy.
Viking standard response sprinklers may be ordered and/or used as open sprinklers (glass bulb and pip cap assembly removed)
on deluge systems. Refer to Ordering Instructions on page 13f,

S. OPERATION
During fire conditions, when the temperature around the sprinkler reaches Its operating temperature, the heat-sensitive liquid in
the glass bulb expands, causing the bulb to shatter, releasing the pip cap and sealing spring assembly. Water flowing through the
sprinkler orifice strikes the sprinkler deflector, forming a uniform spray pattern to extinguish or control the fire.
INSPECTIONS, TESTS AND MAINTENANCE
Refer to NFPA 25 for Inspection, Testing and Maintenance requirements.
