challenges students to create unique works and become well-rounded artists who perform and create
interesting works. We teach anyone who wants to learn to dance! Students gain an appreciation for dance

Building Ballet Foundations: Elevating Dance Technique and Performance
Project Summary:*
Please provide us with a brief summary of your project.
The purpose of this project is to provide high school dance students in Dance 1, 2, 3, and 4 (Dance Company)
with specialized training in ballet and Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) from guest Artist Auti Kamal
Scolman. With a team that includes dancers of varying levels, many without any or with limited formal
training, this program will ensure they receive the foundational training necessary to perform at an advanced
level. There are also many dancers with limiting injuries, and PBT will provide dancers with methods to
increase their strength and agility, hone their flexibility, and move functionally. For Dance 1, 2, and 3, we have
not previously done much ballet training but rather incorporated it into Lyrical Dance Units. More focused
technical training will enhance the performance in class and on stage for all levels of dancers. At the project's
culmination, students will apply their training in a dedicated ballet performance—an exciting first for our
program—showcasing their growth and technique.

Previous Project Success:
If your organization has completed a similar project, please provide details of the project and why it was
successful.
In the past, we’ve hosted teaching artists from San Diego Dance Theater, Mojalet, and other local companies,
offering our students a unique opportunity to explore Modern Dance techniques and collaborate on a
performance piece. These projects have been incredibly successful, providing students with exposure to
techniques beyond my primary expertise, and helping shape them into more versatile dancers. Engaging with
guest artists also introduces them to various teaching styles, methodologies, and choreographic approaches,
enhancing their adaptability as performers.
Beyond technique, these residencies broaden students’ understanding of dance as a profession, gaining
insight into careers in the field. Many students have shared how inspiring it is to learn from artists and hear
about their journeys. These projects have also fostered confidence: students achieved things they once
thought too difficult—floor work, dynamic partner lifts, and improvisation. The balance of structure and
exploration has encouraged students to push past their perceived limits.
This upcoming project with Auti Kamal will build on these successes, offering students strong ballet
technique training while preparing them for more advanced movement styles. Training under a skilled

instructor will refine their technique and help them develop the discipline, artistry, and body awareness
necessary for future dance opportunities.
Project Distinction:
What makes this project distinctive?
This project is distinctive because it provides rigorous ballet training to dancers who may not have had access
to formal technique classes. Many of our students come from diverse backgrounds in terms of race, class, and
their dance training, and this initiative ensures that all students can master the foundational skills necessary
for high-level choreography whether or not they were/are able to train outside of school. Partnering with
Auti Kamal, a renowned teaching artist with over a million YouTube followers, also gives students a unique
opportunity to learn from a respected industry professional who is passionate about making advanced
training accessible to all dancers.
Project Goals:
What are the goals (outputs and/or outcomes) of the project? How will you measure your goals?
Outputs:
Provide weekly ballet and PBT classes for all dance levels
Choreograph and perform a ballet piece at the Spring Concert and other community events
Outcomes:
Strengthen dancers' technical abilities in ballet
Increase students' confidence and performance quality
Expand community engagement through high-quality artistic presentations
Measurement:
Pre- and post-program assessments of students' technical skills
Instructor evaluations and student reflections
Audience and community feedback from performances
Target Population:
Who is your target population and why? How will you reach them?
Our target population is all levels of the Sage Creek High School dance department, consisting of
approximately 60+ students from grades 9-12. Dance 1, 2, and 3 have dancers with limited-to-no formal
training, and many dancers on next year’s team (dance 4) have limited formal training, making this program
crucial for their success in executing the technical demands of advanced choreography. We will reach these
students by integrating the program into their existing training schedule and by appealing to their desire to
improve their dance technique and performance.
Project Partnerships:
If applicable, please provide names and brief descriptions of roles for any partners in this project. This would
include any organizations, artists or individuals involved in your project that are not employed or affiliated with the
applying organization.

This project partners with Auti Kamal Scolman, a professional ballet instructor who has been a teaching artist
in the community for years. With a strong background in ballet and a mission to provide accessible training to
dancers of all levels, Auti will serve as the lead instructor, designing and delivering the curriculum. Additional
support will come from myself or other dance faculty, who will ensure the training is reinforced throughout
the season.
Partner Resumes:
If applicable, you may upload any resumes of teaching artists, artists, or any other partners in the proposed project

Organization Changes/Challenges/Circumstances:
What special circumstances, challenges or changes have affected your organization? What impact has this had on
your organization?
In the last couple of years, we have welcomed dancers onto our team with diverse training backgrounds or
limited training backgrounds, but whose passion for the craft and incredible work ethic earned them a spot in
the advanced levels. This diversity strengthens our ensemble, creating a dynamic space where passion and
skill can converge. However, there will still be a potential significant gap in technical training between those
dancers who have had formal training since childhood and those who have mostly taken dance with me at
school. To ensure every dancer realizes their full potential, regardless of background, we are prioritizing a
robust foundation in fundamental techniques, fostering a culture of collective growth.
If this grant application is for a school-based project, please answer the following two questions:
State Standards Support:
How does your arts education project support the California State Content Standards for the Visual and Performing
Arts? *Please refer to the California State Board of Education website for reference.
This project directly aligns with the California State Content Standards for Visual and Performing Arts by
ensuring students develop both technical proficiency and artistic expression in dance. It supports:
Creating (DA.Cr3.1) – Students refine and apply their technical skills in a new artistic work (ballet
performance).
Performing (DA.Pr4.1) – Students apply kinesthetic principles and movement qualities essential to ballet
technique.
Responding (DA.Re7.1) – Students evaluate their own technical and expressive growth throughout the
program.
Connecting (DA.Cn10.1) – Students explore how ballet technique informs and connects to other dance styles
and performance opportunities.
This project aligns with the mission of the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office by fostering an enriched
artistic environment and providing students with high-quality dance education. By bringing in a professional
ballet and Progressive Ballet Technique (PBT) instructor, we are developing students’ technical and artistic
abilities, enabling them to engage more deeply with dance as an art form. This initiative not only enhances the
cultural landscape within our school but also extends to the broader North San Diego County community

DA.Cr3.1 (Grades 9-12 Advanced): Students will refine ballet technique through instructor feedback and self-
assessment, culminating in a performance.
DA.Pr4.1 (Grades 9-12): Through weekly training, students will develop proper alignment, coordination, and
movement efficiency in ballet.
DA.Re7.1 (Grades 9-12): Students will engage in reflection activities, analyzing their technical growth and
performance quality.

Student Testimonials
The following are testimonials from students who have participated in or would be
participating in the Artist in Residence Program with San Diego Dance Theater at Sage
Creek High School. These students range from 9th to 12th grade and from levels 2 to 4.
“I loved every minute of dancing with Mario from San Diego Dance Theater. I think another
professional dancer who has a different perspective on dance in the room definitely helps the
dancers grow their talents and further their progress. Mario did an awesome job; I learned a lot
from him, and I am more confident as a dancer because of his lessons and tips. I'm very
thankful for that opportunity to work with other amazing dancers.”
Juliana, 10th grade, Dance 2
“The guest artists are huge benefits for all of us. They teach us new things, and new fun dances
that everyone loves. Everytime that I meet a guest artist, they are super friendly and they
believe in all of us. I want to be a professional dancer myself and teach to kids, teens, and
adults. Seeing how they connect with everyone and have such fun with what they do makes me
want to do it more. It is almost like they are showing me what my future could be. Thank you!”
-London Ross 10th grade, Dance 4
“Working with guest choreographers from San Diego Dance Theater would benefit not only my
technique and dance ability but those of our entire dance team as we would have the
opportunity to learn different styles and tips that may help us better understand a style or move.
This grant would allow us to learn from professionals we would not otherwise have access to.
The guest choreographers taught a more modern approach to styles we already knew which
allowed us to broaden the spectrum of what we could do in dances and performances. Working
with the guest choreographers allowed us as students to become more versatile dancers.”
-Sierra, 12th grade
“Working with Artists in Residence from San Diego Dance Theatre not only benefits my
individual progress but the overall company as well. Through guest artists we have had in the
past we have each learned more about the dance community and what it is like to dance
beyond a high school dance team. It opens our minds to various movements and the guest
artists are able to bring their vision to life. Due to the fact of more exposure to the outside
dance, our technique improves with the help and encouragement of the highly knowledgeable
teachers. As we continue to invite guest artists to the SCHS dance company we forever hold
onto what we have learned from each artist and remember this throughout our dance journeys.
That just goes to show how meaningful and impactful bringing in guest artists to our high school
is for us dancers.”
-Arianna, 10th grade
“Working with Artists in Residence from San Diego Dance Theater benefits me in multiple ways.
First, my dance performance improves immensely because I have the opportunity to see
Docusign Envelope ID: 75D975BA-6678-44D8-B0E5-8495EE560296
amazing dancers doing what they love and spreading their love for dance with other students.
Not only does my dance performance improve, but also my technique with being able to watch
and learn from the skilled dancers and learn their work. I enjoy learning the dance team based
technique and gaining perspectives on what it is like to be on a college dance team.
-Madison, 11th grade
Working with Artists in Residence from San Diego Dance Theater allows us to experience new
styles of choreography and be exposed to a different mindset when learning. To explain, some
styles are not very technical, so it would expose us to think differently while performing the
dance. When choreographing, I personally feel that the rest of SCDC influences me to
choreograph certain moves because it is what we are used to doing. In other words, all of our
styles are very similar. Bringing in outside choreographers would get us to start thinking outside
of the box and start training in unique ways. Training in more unique styles would allow SCDC to
be able to pick up choreography faster, no matter how difficult the movement is.
-Ashley, 11th grade
I would love to have a guest choreographer because I would love to learn new styles of dance
and see how other people with different experiences interpret dance. It's also a really good
learning experience to be taught by people we don't know. Meeting new people is also a good
chance to make connections with more outside sources of dance.
-Jeslyn, 9th grade
Having the experience to dance with outside choreographers and teachers is an amazing and
beneficial experience for our program. It gives us a look into the professional dance world
outside of high school. We also get to learn new dance styles, enhance our technique with new
teaching and have a new experience that can help us all grow as dancers and people.
-Emma, 11th grade
“Working with Artists in Residence from San Diego Theater benefitted my dance performance
and technique greatly. The educated and experienced dancers who came in provided my team
and I with new technical tips and insight to large performances. We also learned many new
skills and dances. The teachers provided all of us with a new way to look at dance after high
school, and what professional dancing is like. All the talented dancers in the theater and dance
community benefited our team greatly.”
-Chloe, 11th grade
“As a Sage Creek student who is part of the Dance Department for three years I am was so lucky
that I had the opportunity to meet Liv Nobel Isaacs. I’m so happy that I met this wonderful lady.
I will remember the first day she walked in. We were a very quiet dance class and we were
wondering who was this outside choreographer. Liv told us about her experience at San Diego
State and her work with Trolley Dancers in San Diego. Before we even got to start the dance
Docusign Envelope ID: 75D975BA-6678-44D8-B0E5-8495EE560296
class with her, she seemed super excited. Liv is an outgoing and loving dance teacher, which
made the dance class feel unique. She taught the class mostly modern which was something very
new to the Sage Creek Dance Department. As her dance students, we were never afraid to ask
her a question, especially if I didn’t understand the choreography that was given to me, and she
was always willing to help us grow as dancers. In a way, she grew on us and we as a dance class
were bummed that we didn’t get to see for the rest of the year. I think she has created an amazing
impact in our dance class but also the dance department. We as students will always remember
the dance she created for the art festival. I’m so lucky to have met such a beautiful dance teacher
and I hope to see her again this year and any years moving forward.”
