return to the City the amount requested by the City, up to and including an amount equivalent to the full
Grant award. Failure of the Grantee to comply with the terms of this Agreement shall not be the cause for
return of Grant funds if, in the judgement of the City, such failure was due to no fault of the Grantee. In

shall be eligible to be paid by Grant funds. However, if, due to a local health order, Grantee is unable to

Community Technical Theatre Learning Program
Project Summary:*
Please provide us with a brief summary of your project.
When patrons attend a production, they see a story being told on stage. The actors and actresses invest time
and effort to create a lasting impression. There are many people who work behind the scenes to support the
grandeur of that experience. That team, also known as “tech crew,” also contributes to the success of the story
being told. Our community needs a pool of technicians to support productions in the performing arts. This
program targets teens and adults who want to learn various roles in tech theatre. These roles include: sound
technician, lighting operator, spotlight operator, stage manager, mic technician, costume assistant, set builder,
make-up artist, and props manager. Providing trained and experienced technicians for productions in schools
and other venues in the community will sustain arts programs that provide entertainment, learning, and
growth for patrons and participants. It also allows residents of the community to prepare for work in tech
theatre by gaining experience in these areas, and expand their possible career options.
Project Start Date:*
Please note that project start date must be on or after September 2, 2025.

events for marketing, communications and/or possible future site visits.
Participants will be trained by a Technical Director and other designated team leaders during rehearsals for
the family show, which typically runs during the summer in the City of Carlsbad. CCT intends to use the
Cultural Arts Center for this production so it takes place within the City. We are seeking financial support to
run this program due to the high cost of renting a full-scale theatre within the City. To provide educational
opportunities like this, as well as entertainment for patrons to enjoy, we aim to subsidize the facility cost and
employment expense for the Technical Director.

Previous Project Success:
If your organization has completed a similar project, please provide details of the project and why it was
successful.
CCT produced The Addams Family for its family show during July 2024. It ran at the CAC, using interns for all
tech positions. It was extremely popular with the youth from the community who participated in this
program. It gave them an opportunity to learn and get hands-on experience in a full-scale theatre with a high
technical capacity. Many of these individuals have been called to work for other shows after participating in
this program, including in the Carlsbad schools. We hope to widen the funnel of tech operators by giving them
support and experience that will lead to future opportunities. For these reasons, we hope to have the City's
support to continue running this program. We have successfully run similar versions for the past 3 summers
with support from this grant!

Outside of college-level courses, there are few programs offered that provide training or experience in
running technical theatre. While college is a worthwhile avenue, the tasks and skills involved do not always
require college training - at the basic level, serving on tech crew requires mentoring and hands-on
experience. People can learn basic skills at earlier ages and advance those skills with experience. This is a
program-building opportunity for performing arts in the local community and a vein for workforce
development. When participants are given a chance to try theatre tech at an earlier point in their lives, they
may find a passion and appreciation for what it takes to run a production from behind the scenes. They may
also discover a viable avenue for a career or jobs that can sustain their income while they pursue other goals.
We intend to hire an excellent technical director who can coordinate and mentor the program participants,
and build a reputation that attracts candidates for these roles in the future.
Project Goals:
What are the goals (outputs and/or outcomes) of the project? How will you measure your goals?
Our goal is to prepare a technical theatre team in the areas of sound, lighting, spotlight operation, stage
management, running mics, costuming, set building, make-up, and props management during rehearsals and
production for the family show. Upon completing their training, program participants will run tech during
tech week and all performances. Successful outcomes include filling each position with 1-2 participants for
each production and running tech during performances with minimal errors. This technical training program
will follow each intern's areas of technical interest and goals. By identifying the students' interests, we will
assign a role for the production that aligns with their goals, and train them in those technical tasks. We hope
to give a full experience to the interns so they can explore the technical side of producing a show.
Target Population:
Who is your target population and why? How will you reach them?
We will target high school students and adults who live in Carlsbad and the surrounding area. Outreach will
occur through communicating with teachers who work in the arts in Carlsbad schools, emailing our past
program participants and our email distribution list, and posting social media advertisements. We will also
contact youth who have participated as actors in past productions to see if they have an interest in being part
of our tech crew.
Project Partnerships:
If applicable, please provide names and brief descriptions of roles for any partners in this project. This would
include any organizations, artists or individuals involved in your project that are not employed or affiliated with the
applying organization.

Organization Changes/Challenges/Circumstances:
What special circumstances, challenges or changes have affected your organization? What impact has this had on
your organization?
CCT faces many challenges that require us to reach beyond production fees and ticket sales to support our
shows. The most prominent challenges are (1) Finding available space to rehearse and perform in Carlsbad,
which comes at a premium cost. (2) Managing hiring practices that are in line with California laws due to AB5,
which requires CCT to hire employees, including the costs involved with HR support, employment taxes and
insurances. The rising costs have been immense, and we need to seek additional funding sources to continue
our operations (3) Locating people to help run our productions. Many people who workin tech roles do so on
a temporary basis or move on to work with larger theatres. It is continually challenging to find replacements.
This program aims to build a funnel of human resources that we can use for future shows in addition to the
goal of providing arts education. Despite the challenges, the CCT Board remains committed to our mission of
providing high-quality performing arts events and programs. Many of our Board members work on our
productions while others, who have substantial experience with other performing arts organizations, offer
advice and input into planning and decisions. As a result, CCT is recognized as a well-run theatre in our
community, where we have networked and served for more than 40 years. Thank you for considering this
grant request.
