Recommended Action
Receive a report on recently completed and upcoming Adults 50+ activities, donations and
grants, as well as other topics of interest.
Executive Summary
Recreation Area Manager Eric Biggin and Recreation Supervisor Andi Koller will report on recently
completed and upcoming senior activities, donations and grants, as well as other topics of
interest.

ADULTS 50+ ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS
DEPARTMENT REPORT
April 24, 2025
GENERAL
Goal 1: Determine the needs of adults 50+
•A new Seated Toning Zumba Gold class was introduced by instructor Saleemah on Mondays,
beginning March 3, 2025, in response to participant feedback.
•Monthly real estate presentations were held on March 14 and April 18, 2025, led by licensed
realtor Ayren Pfeifer.
•An interactive iPhone workshop was held on April 7, 2025, to help seniors maximize phone use.
•The popular presentation "Fraud Aimed at Seniors" was hosted on April 15, 2025, focusing on
scam awareness and prevention.
Goal 2: Support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan
•The Successful Aging in Place series continued with an in-home services workshop on March 18,
2025, offering information on medical and non-medical resources for independent living.
•The Senior Center partnered with AAA on March 19, 2025, to present the "Keeping the Keys"
workshop, supporting safe driving practices for seniors.
•Sherri Singleton, CSA, presented new research about cognitive aging on March 27, 2025,
highlighting differences between normal and troubling memory changes.
•Free "Ask the Attorney" consultations were provided on March 11 and April 15, 2025, offering
one-on-one appointments for legal guidance.
Goal 3: Create Adult 50+ opportunities and collaborations beyond the Senior Center
•A senior excursion to Harrah’s Casino & Resort was held on March 20, 2025, featuring an updated
schedule allowing participants to enjoy dining at their favorite restaurants.
•Outdoor Tai Chi returned to Pine Avenue Community Park for a 12-week session beginning April 1,
2025, in collaboration with the County of San Diego.
•A new weekly senior yoga class was launched at the Stagecoach Community Center on April 1,
2025, through a collaboration between volunteer instructors.
•A self-led excursion to Balboa Park took place on April 17, 2025, featuring opportunities to explore
museums, gardens, and historic architecture.
•The AARP Tax-Aide program served the community with 120 weekly appointments, plus drop-in
assistance, from Feb. 4 to April 10, 2025. A total of 886 federal and 880 state returns were
submitted, making the Senior Center the highest-performing AARP location in North County.
Goal 4: Increase social inclusion, enhance connectivity and minimize isolation
•The Courtyard Concert series featured Steelin Tin on March 10, 2025, volunteer artist Brian Neele
on April 4, 2025, and O’side Rockers on April 14, 2025.
•The staff-led Rummikub group was officially established as a regular program on April 1, 2025,
consistently drawing more than 20 participants weekly. Based on feedback, facilitator Tawny will
begin rotating game selections.
•The Broadway Film Series included screenings of South Pacific on March 20, 2025, and Brigadoon
on April 17, 2025.

o DONATIONS: $802.00
o MISC REVENUE: $4,743.60 – Consists of Fitness Center drop-in fees and memberships
o EXPENDITURES: $1,160.00 – Includes costs to host three Concerts in the Courtyard
and garden club supplies and maintenance

Volunteer Engagement
•As of April 15, 2025, there are 110 active volunteers across senior service areas:
o Nutrition: 40 volunteers, averaging 225 hours per month.
o Programs: 65 volunteers, averaging 300 hours per month.
o Administrative support: five volunteers, averaging 30 hours per month.
