PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Chair Chung led the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the regular meeting held April 3, 2025 Motion by Commissioner Nassiri, seconded by Commissioner George, to approve the minutes as presented. Motion carried, 5/0/2 (Breyer, Carrillo -Absent). PRESENTATIONS: None. PUBLIC COMMENT: None. CONSENT CALENDAR: None. PUBLIC HEARING: None. DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS: 1. VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK ARTIST CONCEPT PRESENTATION: Receive a report from artist Gordon Huether on the update for Veterans Memorial Park Public Art concepts. (Staff contact: Krystal Roa, Library & Cultural Arts Department) Recommended Action: Receive the report. The Commission received the report. Artist Gordon Huether reviewed a PowerPoint presentation (on file in the Office of the City Clerk). Edward Fox spoke on behalf of Veterans for Peace and wanted to discuss the concept of Peace Bowls as part of the Veterans Memorial Park artwork. Parks and Recreation Department Director Kyle Lancaster provided clarification on Veterans Memorial Park plans. May 1, 2025 Arts Commission Regular Meeting Page 2 2. FISCAL YEAR 2025-26 COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS FUNDING PLAN APPROVAL: Receive a report and vote on the Fisca.I Year 2025-26 Community Arts Grants Funding Plan approval process. (Staff contact: Krystal Roa, Library & Cultural Arts Department} Recommended Action: Receive the report. The Commission received the report. Program Manager Krystal Roa reviewed a PowerPoint presentation (on file in the Office of the City Clerk}. Motion by Commissioner Nassiri, seconded by Commissioner Ferone to approve the Fiscal Year 2025-26 Community Arts Grants funding plan approval process. Motion passed, 6/0/1 (Breyer -Absent} 3. FISCAL YEAR 2025-26 BUDGET UPDATE: Receive an update on the Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget. (Staff contact: (Fiona Everett,.Library & Cultural Arts Department} Recommended Action: Receive the report. Senior Management Analyst Fiona Everett reviewed a PowerPoint presentation (on file in the Office of the City Clerk}. COMMISSION COMMENTARY AND REQUESTS FOR CONSIDERATION OF MATTERS: The Commission Members make brief announcements, brief reports of their activities and requests for future agenda items. CULTURAL ARTS MANAGERS COMMENTS: Cultural Arts Manager Stropes commented on the following: • Greenmeme to receive feedback over the next few months for artwork on the Chestnut Underpass permanent public art project • The final design for the Chestnut Underpass permanent public art planned for the Arts Commission meeting in September • Grantee Opera 4 Kids will be presenting a bilingual performance at the Dfa de las Ninos on May 3 • May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Month with curated performances and activities • May films feature Asian Pacific Islander American diaspora • Curator of Exhibitions Alyson Benford has done an amazing job encouraging patrons to return to the gallery and visitorship is in the triple digits • Cannon Art Gallery will be open until 7 p.m. on Friday nights • Club Pelican will be returning for the first time in five years • Sponsorship approval for TGIF will go before City Council on May 20 • TGIF Concerts in the Parks bands will be announced mid-May May 1, 2025 Arts Commission Regular Meeting Page 3 ANNOUNCEMENTS: STAFF COMMENTS: None.
