Dear Mr. Ebner: Giles Engineering Associates, Inc. (Giles) is pleased to present the results of our final geotechnical testing services for the new Chick-fil-A restaurant located at the subject site. Giles’ work consisted of soil observation and compaction during site grading. SUMMARY OF EARTHWORK OPERATION AND TESTING Our geotechnical field services for this project included observation and compaction testing for subgrade and aggregate base for the construction of building pad areas as referenced above (including performing footing inspections), trash enclosure and canopy footings, utility trenches, storm infiltration system, grease interceptor, and parking areas. These observation and testing services described herein were initiated on October 19, 2023, and continued to date, with final observations and compaction testing on June 11, 2024. Final Compaction Report Proposed Chick-fil-A Restaurant #4306 I-5 and Palomar FSU 5848 Avenida Encinas Carlsbad, California Giles Project No. 2M-2207001 Page 2 A total of nearly 300 field density tests were performed with Test No. 9 to 269 performed during the post building pad grading (Report for Building Pad Compaction issued November 3, 2023) portion of the project to document that the compacted fill met project specifications. The approximate locations of these tests are shown in Figure 1. The field density tests were conducted with a nuclear density gauge in accordance with ASTM 6938-10 (replaced ASTM D2922 and ASTM D3017). The following sections briefly described the results of our observation and testing. Footing Observation and Testing The bottoms of the footing excavations were probed with a small diameter steel probe and assessed to be firm and dense. Footings were observed to be excavated per plan (length/width/depth) and founded in competent materials. The bearing suitability of the soils was also checked using a Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCP) instrument. Any loose soils at the footing bottom were removed and recompacted. The results using DCP testing documented that the soils possess an allowable soil bearing pressure in excess of the design value recommended in our geotechnical report. Grease Interceptor Observation and Testing Grease interceptor locations were observed to be excavated to planned depths of approximately 9 feet below existing grade. The bottom excavation was probed with a small diameter steel probe rod and assessed to be firm and dense. We monitored the placement of a 6-inch to 8-inch lift of gravel at the bottom of the excavation. In addition, we monitored the backfilling operation and conducted compaction testing on an on-call basis with a nuclear gauge to document that at least 90 percent relative compaction was achieved at the test locations. Utility Line Trench Observation and Testing Backfill observation and testing for the onsite electrical line, sewer line, domestic water line, fire line, storm drain, and gas line were performed. The soils were compacted in lifts of about 6 to 8 inches in thickness. Giles monitored the backfill operation and conducted compaction tests on an on-call basis with a nuclear gauge to document that at least 90 percent (or 95 percent for utility lines within the parking lot, and subgrade within the upper 12 inches of pavement subgrade) relative compaction was achieved at the test locations. Trash Enclosure and Patio Canopy Footing Observation Trash enclosure and patio canopy footings were observed to be excavated per plan (length/width/depth) and founded in competent materials. The bottoms of the footing excavations were probed with a small diameter steel probe rod and assessed to be firm and dense. The bearing suitability of the soils was also checked using a Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCP) instrument. Retention System Observation Retention system excavation was observed to be excavated to planned depths of approximately 4 ½ feet below grade. We monitored the placement of 4 inches of ¾ inch gravel at the bottom of the excavation. Retention system concrete boxes were placed on top of ¾ inch gravel and approved bottom. We monitored the backfill operation and conducted compaction tests on an on-call basis with a nuclear gauge to document that at least 95 percent relative compaction was achieved at the test locations. Off-Site Curbs, Off-site Sidewalks, Patio and Parking Lot Areas Observation and Testing Subgrade soils within the parking areas, off-site curbs, off-site sidewalks and patio were generally graded, including moisture conditioning, and compacting using a vibrating roller, to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density, for the upper 12 inches of subgrade, and 90 percent below 12 inches based on Modified Proctor (ASTM D1557) per the project geotechnical recommendations. Imported aggregate base was placed within the parking area, both for parking stalls and off-site trench areas. These materials were moisture conditioned and compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density based on Modified Proctor (ASTM D1557). Asphaltic concrete was placed on the compacted base in the parking lot area. Laboratory Testing Laboratory testing was completed during our Geotechnical Services to determine soil parameters and suitability for use as structural fill. The laboratory testing program was conducted in general accordance with the procedures recommended by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and/or other relative specifications. Results of the laboratory tests are summarized in Table 2 and 3 and below. Proctor Maximum Dry Density and Optimum Moisture The determination of the maximum dry density at optimum moisture content was completed on select bulk representative samples to determine the relative density of our test results.
