WALL BACKFILL AND UPPER HOUSE PAD CERTIFICATION, ST. CLAIRE
RESIDENCE, 4588 ADAMS STREET, CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA (APN 206-792-38-00)
Pursuant to your authorization, and in accordance with the requirements for the City of
Carlsbad, this compaction report for the recent wall backfill has been prepared for the
above referenced site. We have completed engineering observation and testing services
for site building retaining wall backfill. The upper building pad area is now complete. This
report summarizes the results of our tests and observations of the compacted fill which was
placed periodically from August 26 through October 27, 2022. Actual dates are shown on
the attached compaction test result sheet. The remainder of grading will consist primarily
of exterior wall backfill operations.
Laboratory compaction testing was performed to determine the maximum dry density and
optimum moisture of each soil type in accordance with ASTM D-1557, and previous
laboratory tests were brought forward from our Update Compaction Report dated October
18, 2021.
Fill was placed in 6 to 8-inch lifts and compacted by repeated passes of whackers. Field
density tests were performed in accordance with ASTM D-6938 nuclear gauge as the fill
was placed. The moisture content for each density sample was also determined. The
approximate locations and results of the field density tests are shown on the attached
compaction test result sheet. In our opinion wall backfill was performed in compliance with
the recommendations of our referenced report and the city of Carlsbad grading ordinance.
Test locations were selected to provide the best possible coverage. The test locations are
plotted on the included Plate1A which was derived from the approved grading plan
provided by la Costa Engineering. Field density test results are summarized on the
compaction test result table. Elevations and locations of field density tests were
determined by hand level and pacing/tape measure relative to the top of retaining wall.
The results of our field density tests and laboratory testing indicate that the soils within the
upper pad areas were compacted to at least 90% of the corresponding maximum dry
density at the tested locations.

INTERIM COMPACTION REPORT FOR SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCE LOCATED AT
4588 ADAMS STREET CARLSBAD CA.
Pursuant to your authorization, and in accordance with the requirements for the City of
Carlsbad , this compaction report for the recent recommended remedial grading has been
prepared for the above referenced site. We have completed engineering observation and
testing services in conjunction with the removal and re-compact grading operations which
consisted of a 2-foot removal and re-compact of the existing soils within the garage and
portion of the upper building pad areas. This report summarizes the results of our tests
and observations of the compacted fill which was placed periodically from October 19,
2021 through November 2, 2021 . Actual dates are shown on the attached compaction
test result sheet. The remainder of grading will consist primarily of wall backfill operations.
A laboratory compaction test was performed to determine the maximum dry density and
optimum moisture in accordance with ASTM D-1557 and previous laboratory tests were
brought forward from our Update Compaction Report dated October 18, 2021.
Fill was placed in 6 to 8-inch lifts and compacted by means of heavy construction
equipment. Field density tests were performed in accordance with ASTM D-6938 nuclear
gauge as the fill was placed. The moisture content for each density sample was also
determined. The approximate locations of the field density tests are shown on the attached
compaction test result sheet. In our opinion the remedial grading was performed in
compliance with the recommendations of our referenced report.
The locations of the tests were placed to provide the best possible coverage. Areas of low
compaction, as indicated by the field density tests, were brought to the attention of the
contractor. These areas were reworked by the contractor and retested. The test locations
are plotted on the included Plate1 which was derived from the approved grading plan
provided by La Costa Engineering. Field density test results are summarized on the
compaction test result table. Elevations and locations of field density tests were
determined by hand level and pacing/tape measure relative to field staking done by others.

Test locations were selected to provide the best possible coverage. The test locations are
plotted on the included grading limits and compaction test location map, Plate1 . which was
derived from the approved grading plan provided by La Costa Engineering. Field density
test results are summarized on the compaction test result table. Depth and locations of
field density tests were determined by hand level and pacing/tape measure relative to the
top of retaining wall or information provided by the contractor.
The results of our field density tests and laboratory testing indicate that the soils within the
referenced areas were compacted to at least 90% of the corresponding maximum dry
density at the tested locations.
Perimeter walls where no tests are shown were backfilled with gravel and approved by city
inspector.
Our description of the backfill operations, as well as observations and testing services
herein, have been limited to those backfill operations conducted from December 8, 2022
through December 26, 2023. In our opinion compacted fill within the delineated limits of
current grading is suitable for intended use.
Previous recommendations and limitations set forth in our "Update Compaction Report
Graded Pad, 4488 Adams Street, Carlsbad, California", dated March 29, 2019 are valid
and applicable.
The property owner(s) should be made aware that altering drainage patterns, landscaping,
the addition of patios, planters, and other improvements, as well as over irrigation and
variations in seasonal rainfall, all effect subsurface moisture conditions, which in turn affect
structural performance
The conclusions contained herein have been based upon our observations and testing as
noted. No representations are made as to the quality or extent of materials not observed
and tested.
