We have prepared this summary letter, as requested by City of Carlsbad as part of project completion. Onsite
quality control services, provided by Engineering Design Group, are summarized in the above referenced
reports and inspections summaries. Engineering Design Group certifies that the soil engineering and
engineering geologic aspects of the grading, is in compliance with the referenced Geotechnical Report
(Reference No. 1), and Grading Plan, Drawing No. 536-9A (Reference No. 2). As part of ongoing
maintenance, the efficacy of newly constructed systems should be diligently monitored and where systems are
not operating as intended, erosion is occurring, conditions should be addressed immediately.
Respectfully Submitted,
ENGINEERING DESIGN GROUP

Re: Proposed New Residence located at APN: 156-231-70-00 Cynthia Lane, Carlsbad,

Subject: Compaction Report – Rough Grading
INTRODUCTION
In accordance with your request and authorization we have provided limited earthwork observation and
compaction testing services during the rough grading at the above referenced site. The results of our
limited quality control and compaction testing operations are summarized below. We understand the
proposed improvements include the construction of a new single-family residence, with typical
landscape and hardscape improvements.
GRADING OPERATIONS
The scope of rough grading operations for this project consisted of retaining wall backfill operations
along the south, west, and north property lines, and the removal and re-compaction of existing fill and
weathered profiles in the area of proposed building pad for the new residence. Rough grading at the
subject site was conducted during May 2023.
As part of the creation of the building pad, unsuitable fill and weathered soil profiles were removed to
competent material. Removals extended to a depth of 3-4 feet below adjacent finish grade and
extended a distance of 5 feet outside the building footprint, as delineated in the field by the contractor.
Removal bottoms were ripped to a minimum depth of 12 inches and moisture conditioned, prior to the
placement of fill.
Onsite and import soil was utilized as graded fill. Prior to re-compaction, soils were generally cleaned of
vegetative and other debris and moisture conditioned. Onsite soil consisted of a range of greyish brown
to reddish brown, moist, medium dense, silty sands and sandy silts with organics. Based upon our
observation and experience, onsite soils possess a low potential for expansion. Import soils consisted of
a range of brown to reddish brown, silty sands and sandy silts. Based upon our observation and
experience, import soils possess a low potential for expansion. Soil was moisture conditioned with a fire
hose and placed utilizing a combination of an excavator, CAT 814 loader, and remote-controlled sheep
foot roller.

FIELD AND LABORATORY TESTING
Limited field density tests were performed in accordance with D2922 (Nuclear Gauge Method). Our test
results indicate that, in the locations tested, soils have been compacted to at least 90% relative
compaction, as determined by ASTM D1557, (Procedure A). The reported test results are representative
of the soil conditions at the locations tested. Our observation and field density testing methods are in
accordance with normally accepted procedures. The accuracy of the relative compaction values is
subject to the precision limitations of the ASTM test methods. The accuracy of the maximum dry density
determination (ASTM D1557) is discussed in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Section 4, Volume
04.08, entitled, Soil and Rock; Building Stones. Variations of relative compaction values should be
expected, laterally and vertically, from actual test locations.
TESTING SUMMARY
In general, it is our opinion, based on the placement procedure and the test data collected, the fill soils
tested, at the locations tested, were compacted to a minimum of 90% relative compaction (based on
ASTM D1557, Procedure A).
If you have any questions regarding this report, or if we can be of further service, please do not hesitate
to contact us. We hope the report provides you with the necessary information to continue with the
development of the project.
Sincerely,
ENGINEERING DESIGN GROUP
