The additional earthwork reported herein was performed between December 13, 2020, and September 16, 2024. Our firm previously performed a geotechnical investigation of the property, the results of which were presented in our Report of Preliminary Geotechnical Investigation dated September 14, 2018. We have also issued the following documents: 1.) Report of Limited Geotechnical Investigation for Proposed Storm Water Infiltration BMPs); dated September 14, 2020. 2.) Recommendations for Foundations Close to Water Infiltration BMP Ponds; dated February 08, 2021. 3.) Clarification of Recommendation for Foundations Close to Water Infiltration BMP Ponds; dated August 26, 2021. 4.) Plan Review; dated January 17, 2022. Report of Rough Grading Observations and Soil Testing; dated June 12, 2023. 9.) Revised Report of Rough Grading Observations and Soil Testing; dated June 15, 2023, and Revised July 07, 2023. FIELD OBSERVATIONS As previously mentioned, a rough grading report was issued for this project on June 15, 2023, and revised July 07, 2023. The following is a brief summary of the work performed. For more detailed information, refer to our July 07, 2023, report. 1. Our representative observed soil removal on all 4 lots. The soils consisted of dense formational soils and recompacted fill soils were placed on top of dense formational soils on all 4 building pads. Our representative also observed grading of the driveway soils and backfill placement along the north property line retaining wall. The observed soils were tested for the recommended compaction. 2. Our representative observed and tested the retaining wall backfill placement for the west property line running along Lots 3 and 4. The backfill consisted of imported soils. The wall backfill was properly moisture conditioned as needed, and then compacted and tested for proper compaction. Date of observations were between June 15 and 26, 2023. Utility trench backfill placement for the sewer tie-in located on Adams Street was observed and tested using imported soils. Backfilling for the sewer utility trenches located on the south side and the north side driveways were also observed and tested. Date of observations were between June 27 and July 6, 2023. 4. Backfill placement for the domestic water line utility trench to all lots, as well as the north and south sides of the driveway, were observed and tested. Both on-site and imported soils were used as backfill. Date of observation was July 10, 2023. 5. Backfill placement for storm drain utility trenches on the south sides of all lots was observed and tested on July 12, 2023. 6. Backfill placement for the water main trench under Adams Street was observed and tested. Imported soil material was used as backfill. A total of 4 water service trenches running perpendicular to Adams Street were observed and tested on September 28, 2023. 7. Backfill placement for a joint utility trench that starts in the turf area between Lots 2 and 4 and swings around the driveway area between Lots 1 and 2 was observed and tested. A portion of the same trench heads south through the driveway and swings to the west heading into Lots 3 and 4. The backfill placement was observed and tested. Dates of observation were between November 3 and 6, 2023 8. Backfill placement of the utility trench where the old water main on Adams Street was removed, was observed and tested on November 6, 2023. Rincon-Adams Street Project Job No. 20-12852 Carlsbad, California Page 4 9. The curb subgrade and driveway base perimeter for the 4 lots were observed and tested. The subgrade consisted of on-site soil material and the base grade consisted of imported soil material. A joint utility trench located in Adams Street was also tested using on-site soil material. The Adams Street curb and gutter subgrade and base grades were also tested. Date of observations were between November 11 and December 4, 2023. 10. The concrete driveway apron approaching from the east to Lots 1 and 2 were tested. The subgrade soils for the driveway located between the four lots was observed and tested, including the base grade and the asphalt concrete. A small section near the entry of the private driveway was also observed and tested for the gas tie-in utilities. Date of observations were between December 11 and 13, 2023. 11. The final subgrade soils and base grade soils for the private driveway located between the four lots was observed and tested. The final asphalt concrete pavement grade was also tested for the recommended compaction. Date of observations was December 19, 2023. 12. The Adams Street final soil subgrade and base grade were observed and tested. The asphalt concrete placed above the base grade was tested for the recommended compaction. Dates of observations were between January 2 and 15, 2024 13. Backfill placement for a new 2-inch-diameter water line utility trench running on the north side of Lot 1 and the south side of Lot 2 was observed and tested. The final subgrade soils for the sidewalk and driveway located on the east sides of Lots 1 and 2 were also observed and tested. Dates of observations were between March 13 and July 10, 2024. Rincon-Adams Street Project Job No. 20-12852 Carlsbad, California Page 5 14. Backfill placement for the exterior subgrade soils of the patios for all lots were observed and tested. The driveway subgrade soils for Lots 3 and 4 were also tested. Dates of observations were on July 15 and August 15, 2024. 15. An approximately 2- to 3-inch-thick final asphalt concrete cap was placed on Adams Street and along the area of the private driveway located between the four lots. The asphalt cap was tested for the recommended compaction on September 16, 2024. SOIL TESTING Representative soil samples were collected during the grading to determine laboratory maximum dry density of the soils per ASTM D1557-12r21. Field density tests were performed at approximate locations shown on Figure No. II, Plot Plan, in accordance with ASTM D6938-17a. The complete list of field density tests results is shown on Table A of Figure Nos. IIIa-j, and laboratory soil compaction test results are shown on Table B of Figure No. IIIk. Equipment used for earthwork compaction included a CAT950 loader, a skid steer, and a 210 excavator with sheepsfoot compaction wheel. A water hose was used to add water, when needed, to increase soil moisture. Field density tests yielded a relative compaction of at least 90 percent (95 percent at certain locations) of maximum dry density at the tested locations. Density tests were performed with a nuclear gauge testing apparatus in accordance with ASTM D6938-17a. The maximum dry density of the soils was determined per ASTM D1557-12r21. On-site soils used during earthwork consisted of reddish-brown silty sand. Imported soils consisted of dark yellowish brown silty sand. The existing on-site soils were determined to have a low expansion potential, with an expansion index (E.I.) of 0 Rincon-Adams Street Project Job No. 20-12852 Carlsbad, California Page 6 and the imported soils were classified with low expansion potential, with the highest E.I. value of 39 per ASTM D4829. The asphalt concrete Hveem maximum compaction value was provided by the concrete supplier at the time of testing. The numbers are shown on Table B Figure No. IIIj. Proper finish drainage for the site was to be implemented by the general contractor prior to completing construction. SITE SUITABILITY AND COMPLIANCE The observed and tested areas of the grading operation, including the underlying dense formational soils are, in our professional opinion, suitable for their intended use of supporting the recompacted fills, structure foundations, and new exterior improvements. We certify that the soil engineering and engineering geologic aspects of grading are in compliance with the approved soils report and the approved grading and foundation plans. LIMITATIONS The findings and opinions presented herein have been made in accordance with currently accepted principles and practice in the field of geotechnical engineering in the City of Carlsbad in the County of San Diego. No warranty, either expressed or implied, is made. All statements in this report are applicable only for the grading operation observed and tested by our firm. The firm Geotechnical Exploration, Inc. shall not be held responsible for fill soils placed without our observations and testing at any other time, Rincon-Adams Street Project Job No. 20-12852 Carlsbad, California Page 7 or subsequent changes to the site by others, which directly or indirectly cause poor surface or subsurface drainage, water erosion, and/or alteration of the strength of the compacted fill soils. It is not within the scope of our services to provide quality control oversight for surface or subsurface drainage construction or retaining wall sealing and base of wall drain construction. It is the responsibility of the contractor to verify proper wall sealing, geofabric installation, protection board installation (if needed), drain depth below interior floor or yard surfaces; pipe percent slope to the outlet, etc. In the event that any changes in the nature, design, or location of the building or improvements are planned, the conclusions and recommendations contained in this report should not be considered valid unless the changes are reviewed and the conclusions of this report modified or verified in writing.
