EXTENDED COVERAGE ORDINARY HAZARD SPRINKLERS
11.2 K-FACTOR MODEL F895 (SIN G1893) PENDENT & (SIN G1894) UPRIGHT
14.0 K-FACTOR MODEL F895 (SIN G1895) PENDENT & (SIN G1896) UPRIGHT
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 11.2 and 14.0 K-factor, Model
F895 Designer Extended Coverage
Ordinary Hazard (ECOH) Pendent,
Recessed Pendent, and Upright Sprin-
klers (Ref. Figure A) are automatic
sprinklers of the frangible bulb type.
They are intended for use in automatic
sprinkler systems designed in accord-
ance with standard installation rules
(e.g., NFPA 13) for the protection of
ordinary hazards up to a maximum
coverage area of 256 tt2 (23,8 m2) for
the 11.2 K-factor and 400 ft2 (37,2
m2) for the 14.0 K-factor, as com-
pared to the maximum coverage area
of 130 ft2 (12, 1 m2) for standard cover-
age sprinklers.
The F895 ECOH Sprinklers have been
fire tested to compare their perform-
ance to that of standard spray sprin-
klers installed at standard spacings
(i.e. 15 feet maximum on center spac-
ing and 130 sq. ft. maximum coverage
area for ordinary hazard). These tests
Printed in U.S.A. 2-00
have shown that the protection pro-
vided by the F895 ECOH Sprinklers is
equal to or more effective than stand-
ard spray sprinklers.
The recessed version of the F895
ECOH Sprinkler is obtained by com-
bining the pendent sprinkler with the
Model F700 Recessed Escutcheon
(Ref. Figures A and B). The F700 Re-
cessed Escutcheon provides 1/2 inch
(12,7 mm) of recessed adjustment or
up to 3/4 inch (19, 1 mm) of adjustment
from the flush pendent position. The
F700 is a separable two-piece design
which allows installation of the sprin-
klers and pressure testing of the fire
protection system, prior to ceiling con-
struction and/or application of a finish
coat to the ceiling. They also permit
refinishing of a ceiling surface without
having to first shut down the fire pro-
tection system and remove sprinklers.
The adjustment provided by the F700
substantially reduces the accuracy to
which the fixed pipe drops to the sprin-
klers must be cut. Also, the Closure
has a 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) wide flange
which provides ample clearance for
covering the mounting hole.

TECHNICAL DATA
The 11.2 and 14.0 K-factor, Model
F895 Extended Coverage Ordinary
Hazard (ECOH) Pendent, Recessed
Pendent, and Upright Sprinklers are
rated for use at a maximum service
pressure of 175 psi (12, 1 bar) and they
are available in the temperature rat-
ings and finishes indicated in Table A.
Recessed versions of the F895 ECOH
Sprinklers are obtained by utilizing the
Model F895 Pendent Sprinkler in com-
bination with the Model F700 Re-
cessed Escutcheon. The Model F700
Escutcheons are available either with
a chrome plated finish or a coated fin-
ish in any color.
The flow "Q" in GPM (LPM) is deter-
mined by the formula:
where the nominal sprinkler discharge
coefficient "K" equals either 11.2
(161.3) or 14.0 (201.6); and "p" =
pressure in psi (bar).
The Frame of the Model F895 Sprin-
kler, (Ref. Figure A), is brass per
ASTM B584 (C83600 or C84400). The
Button (bulb retainer) is phosphor
bronze per ASTM B103 (C54400) or
brass (C36000). The Gasketed Spring
Plate consists of a Beryllium Nickel
(N03360) disc spring that is sealed on
both its inside and outside faces with
a Teflont gasket. The Compression
Screw is bronze per ASTM B 140
(C31400) and the Deflector is brass
per ASTM B36 (C22000, C24000, or
C24000). The Pintle is stainless steel
(S42000). The Model F895 Sprinklers
utilize a 3 mm diameter frangible bulb.
Table A indicates the bulb liquid color
as a function of temperature rating.
The F700 Recessed Escutcheon pro-
vided for use with the F895 ECOH
Sprinklers (Ref. Figure B) has a Clo-
sure and Mounting Plate fabricated
from low carbon steel. The Mounting
Plate prongs, which are compressed
back into the Mounting Plate as the
Closure is pushed over it, maintain a
tight friction fit between the two pieces.
The Mounting Plate and Closure can
also swivel relative to each other and
compensate for non-perpendicularity
between the F895 ECOH Sprinkler
and the ceiling.

INSTALLATION
NOTE
Do not install any bulb type sprinkler
if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss
of liquid from the bulb. With the sprin-
kler held horizontal, a small air bub-
ble should be present. The diameter of
the air bubble is approximately 1 I 16
inch (1,6 mm) for the 135°F 157°C to
3 I 32 inch (2,4 mm) for the

(The bubble, in some cases, may be
barely perceptible for the lower tem-
perature ratings.)
The Model F895 ECOH Sprinklers
must be installed in accordance with
the following instructions.
1. Prior to installing each sprinkler, ver-
ify that the face of the sprinkler fitting
is within the proper range of distance
which can be accommodated by the
particular type of escutcheon.
-3-
When installing the F895 Sprinkler
with the F700 Recessed Escutch-
eon, tor best overall appearance,
use Dimension "A" indicated under
the "Fully Recessed Dimensions"

Dimension "A" under the "High Ad-
justment Dimensions" heading. In
either case, the remaining adjust-
ment can then be used to compen-
sate for the possible manufacturing
variations in the take-out of the fit-
tings, as well as in the make-in of the
sprinklers (as permitted by ANSI
81.20.1).
2. The sprinkler must be installed with
the deflector parallel to the mounting
surface. Pendent sprinklers must be
installed in the pendent position, and
upright sprinklers must be installed
in the upright position.
3. After installing the F700 mounting
plate (or other escutcheon, as appli-
cable) over the, sprinkler pipe
threads and with pipe thread sealant

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 1/2 inch (15mm) orifice Universal
Model A Pendent, Recessed Pendent,
and Upright Sprinklers (Ref. Figure A)
are automatic sprinklers of the frangi-
ble bulb type. They are "standard re-
sponse -standard orifice spray sprink-
lers" intended for use in fire sprinkler
systems designed in accordance with
the standard installation rules recog-
nized by the applicable Listing or Ap-
proval agency (e.g., UL Listing is
based on NFPA 13 requirements). The
Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Up-
right Sprinklers all produce a hemi-
spherical water distribution pattern
below the deflector.
The recessed versions of the Model A
Sprinkler are obtained by utilizing the
Model A Pendent Sprinkler in combi-
nation with the Model F700 Recessed
Escutcheon (Ref. Figures A and C).
The F700 Recessed Escutcheon pro-
vides 1/2 inch (12,7mm) of recessed
adjustment or up to 3/4 inch (19, 1 mm)
of adjustment from the flush pendent
position.
The F700 has a separable two-piece
Printed in U.S.A. 4-94
design which allows installation of the
sprinklers and pressure testing of the

diameter frangible bulb. Table A indi-
cates the bulb liquid color as a function
of temperature rating.
The F700 Recessed Escutcheon pro-
vided for use with the Model A Pendent
Sprinkler (Ref. Figure C) has a Closure
and Mounting Plate fabricated from
low carbon steel. The Mounting Plate
prongs, which are compressed back
into the Mounting Plate as the Closure
is pushed over it, maintain a tight fric-
tion fit between the two pieces. The
Mounting Plate and Closure can also
swivel relative to each other and com-
pensate for minor non-perpendicular-
ity between the Model A Sprinkler and
the ceiling.
INSTALLATION
NOTES
Do not install any bulb type sprinkler
if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss
of" liquid lrom the bulb. With the
sprinkler held horizontal, a sniall air
bubble should be present. The diame-
ter of the air bubble is approximately
1 I 16 inch (1,6mm) /"or the
135 "FI 57 ·c to 3 I 32 inch (2,4mm) for
the 360"F/182"C rating. (At higher
ambient teniperatures, the bubble
may be barely perceptable /'or the
lower temperature ratings.)
Installation of" Model A Pendent
Sprinklers in recessed escutcheons
other than the F700 will void all
sprinkler warranties, as well as possi-

Sprinkler with the F700 Recessed
Escutcheon, for best overall appear-
ance, use Dimension "A" indicated
under the "Fully Recessed Dimen-
sions" heading of Figure C. Other-
wise, use Dimension "A" under the
"High Adjustment Dimensions"
heading. In either case, the remain-
ing adjustment can be used to com-
pensate for the possible manufac-
turing variations in take-out of the
timing, as well as in the make-in of
the sprinklers (as permitted by ANSI
B1 .20.1 ).
2. After installing the F700 Mounting
Plate (or other escutcheon, as appli-
cable) over the sprinkler threads,
apply pipe thread sealant sparingly
to the sprinkler threads only. Use of
a Teflont based pipe thread sealant
is recommended.
3. Hand tighten the sprinkler into the
sprinkler fitting.
4. Refer to Figure D and select the
appropriate Sprinkler Wrench for
tightening the sprinkler into the
sprinkler fitting.
The F850 Sprinkler Wrench must be
used for installing polyester coated
sprinklers, in order to prevent dam-
age to the sprinkler finish.

lerjoint should be obtained with a
torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0
Nm). A maximum of 21 ft. lbs.
(28,5 Nm) of torque is to be used to
install the sprinklers. Higher lev-
els of torque may distort the
sprinkler inlet with consequent
leakage or impainnent of the
sprinkle,:
Do not attempt to make-up for in-
sufficient adjustment in the es-
cutcheon plate by under-or over-
tightening the sprinkler. Readjust
the position of the sprinkler fitting
to suit.
5. In recessed pendent sprinkler instal-
lations, after the ceiling has been
installed or the finish coat has been
applied, slide on the F700 Closure
over the Model A Sprinkler and push
the Closure over the Mounting Plate
until its flange comes in contact with
the ceiling.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Automatic sprinklers must never be
shipped or stored where their temper-
atures will exceed 1 00'F/38'C and
they must never be painted, plated,
coated or otherwise altered after leav-
ing the factory. Modified sprinklers
must be replaced. Sprinklers that have
been exposed to corrosive products of
I
combustion, but har,e not operated,
should be replaced it they cannot be
completely cleaned by wiping the
sprinkler with a cloth, or by brushing it
with a soft bristle brush. I
Care must be exerci$ed to avoid dam-
age to the sprinkler~ -both before
and after installation!' Sprinklers dam-
aged by dropping, striking, wrench
twisVslippage, or tha like, must be re-
placed. Also, replace,any sprinkler that
has a cracked bulb or that has lost
liquid from its bulb (ref. Installation
Section Note).

Sprinkler Wrench
When using an 8 or 10 inch adjustable Crescent type wrench, the wrench is to be
applied to the sprinkler wrench flats only (Ref. Figure A).
To use the F850 Sprinkler Wrench, slip the Wrench opening over the Model A
Sprinkler Deflector by passing the Sprinkler Wrench around the side of the
Sprinkler as shown in the above illustration.
Using a 1/2 inch ratchet drive or by applying an 8 or 10 inch adjustable wrench to
the hex end of the Sprinkler Wrench, tighten the sprinkler into the fitting. The two
lugs located on opposite sides of the Wrench indicate the orientation of the
sprinkler frame arms.
NOTE
Push up on the Sprinkler Wrench, while it is being turned, to ensure that the
Wrench recess stays fully engaged with the spri.nhler wrench f1ats.
Carefully remove the Sprinkler Wrench by disengaging it from the sprinkler wrench
flats, and then passing it sideways over the sprinkler deflector.
