.... General ~ Description
The Central Model BV-QR, 4.2 & 5.6
K-factor (7/16" & 1/2" orifice) & Model
BVLO-QR, 8.0 K-factor (17/32" orifice),
Upright. Pendent, and Rec. Pendent
Sprinklers are quk:k response -standard
coverage, decorative glass bulb type
spray sprinklers designed for use in light &
ordinary hazard, commercial occupancies
such as banks, hotels, shopping malls etc.
The recessed version of the Central Model
BV-QR, intended for use in areas with a
finished ceiling, uses a two-piece Model
BV Res/QR Recessed Escutcheon
(Vented or Unvented). The Model BV
Res/QR Recessed Escutcheon provides
up to 3/8 inch (9,5 mm) of total adjustment
from the flush pendent position. The
recessed version of the Central Model
BVLO-QR. also intended for use in areas
with a finished ceiling, uses a two-piece
Model ELO Recessed Escutcheon. The
Model ELO Recessed Escutcheon
provides up to 314 inch (19, 1 mm) of total
adjustment from the flush pendent
position. The adJustment provided by
these Recessed Escutcheons reduces the
accuracy to which the fixed pipe drops to
the sprinklers must be cut.
These spnnklers are available with a
polyester coating that may be ut.lized to
extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers
beyond that which would otherwise be
obtained when exposed to corrosive
atmospheres.
Although polyester coated sprinklers have
passed the standard corrosion tests of the
applicable approval agencies, the testing
is not representative of all possible
corrosive atmospheres. Consequenijy, It is
recommended that the end user be
consulted with respect to the suitability of
this corrosion resistant coating for any
given corrosive environment. The effects
of ambient temperature, concentration of
chemicals, and gas/chemical veloclty,
should be considered, as a minimum,
along with the corrosive nature of the
chemical to which the sprinklers will be
exposed.
Operation: The glass bulb contains a fluid
which expands when exposed to heat.
When the rated temperature is reached,
the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the
glass bulb, which then allows the sprinkler
to activate & flow water.
WARNING
The Model BV-QR & BVLO-QR Upright,
Pendent & Rec. Pendent Sprinklers
described herein must be installed and
maintained in compliance with this
document, as well as with the applicable
standards of the National Are Protection
Association, in addition to the standards of
any other authorities having jurisdiction.
Failure to do so may impair the integrity of
these devices.
The owner is responsible for maintaining
their fire protection system and devices in
proper operating condition. The installing
contractor or sprinkler manufacturer
should be contacted relative to any
questions.

Description
The Central Model GB4 & GB4-FR
Royal Flush Adjustable Concealed
Sprinklers are standard spray pendent
sprinklers that allow over 1/2 inch (12.7
mm) of ad1ustment with an aesthetically
pleasing cover plate design. The GB4
is a standard response sprinkler using a
5 mm glass bulb & the GB4-FR is a
quick response sprinkler using a 3 mm
glass bulb. These sprinklers are
pertect for applications in light or
ordinary hazard at standard spacing for
pro1ects that require UL, C-UL, MEA
and/or FM Listing & Approvals.
By adding the option of the clean room
seal. the GB4 can be used in areas
where dust or air flow cannot be
allowed between the room and the area
above the ceiling. This option is used
extensively in "clean room" applications
where the integrity of the ceiling is
critical. The Clean Room Seal is UL
Listed for GB4 only. It is !':!QI Listed
for the GB4-FR. See the clean room
seal data sheet (28-4.0) for details.
Inherent in the design is the capability to
compensate for ceiling heights which
vary with respect to the sprinkler system
piping. This significant feature allows
the Central GB4 & GB4-FR sprinklers to
seat flush with ceilings that can fluctuate
nearly 1/2 ,nch (12.7 mm) in height. The
3-1 /4 inch (82.5 mm) diameter cover
plate presents an unobstructed and
aesthetic appearance. The thin cover
plate projects a mere 3/16 inch (4.8 mm)
below the ceiling.
Operation: When exposed to heat from
a fire, the Cover Plate, which is
normally soldered to the Support Cup at
three points, falls away to expose the
Sprinkler Assembly. At this point the
Deflector supported by the Arms drops
down to its operational position.
The glass bulb contains a fluid which
expands when exposed to heat. When
the rated temperature is reached, the
fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the
glass bulb, which then allows the
sprinkler to activate & flow water.

Do not install the Model GB4 & GB4-FR Royal Flush Adjustable Concealed Pendent Sprinklers in ceilings which have
positive pressure in the space above.
r.!J Installation
The Model GB4 & GB4-FR Royal
Flush Adjustable Concealed Pendent
Sprinklers must be installed in
accordance with the following
instructions.
NOTES
Do not install any bulb type sprinkler
if the bulb is cracked or there is a
Joss of liquid from the bulb. With the
sprinkler held horizontal, a small air
bubble should be present. The
diameter of the air bubble is approxi-
mately 1/16 inch (1.6 mm), The
bubble, in some cases, may be
barely perceptible for the lower
temperature ratings.
A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler
joint should be obtained with a torque
of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9.5 to 19.0 Nm). A
maximum of 21 ft.lbs. (28.5 Nm) of
torque is to be used to install
sprinklers. Higher levels of torque
may distort the sprinkler inlet with
consequent leakage or impairment of
the sprinkler.
Do not attempt to compensate for
insufficient adjustment In the Sprinkler
Assembly by under-or overtightening
the Sprinkler/Support Cup Assembly.
Readjust the position of the sprinkler
fitting to suit.
Step 1. The sprinkler must only be
installed in the pendent position and
with the centerline of the sprinkler
perpendicular to the mounting
surface.
Step 2. Remove the Protective Cap.
Step 3. With pipe thread sealant
applied to the pipe threads, and using
the GB4 Wrench, install and tighten
the Sprinkler/Support Cup Assembly
into the fitting. GB4 Wrench will
except a 1 /2 inch ratchet drive.
Step 4. Replace the Protective Cap
by pushing it upwards until it bottoms
out against the Mounting Cup. The
Protective Cap helps prevent damage
to the Deflector and Arms during
ceiling installation and/or during
application of the finish coating of the
ceiling. It may also be used to locate
the center of the clearance
hole by gently pushing the celling
material up against the center point of
the Cap.
NOTE
As long as the Protective Cap
remains in place, the system is
considered to be 'Out of Service'
Step 5. After the ceiling has been
completed with the 2-1/2 Inch (66.7
mm) diameter clearance hole and in
preparation for Installing the Cover
Plate Assembly, remove and dis-
card the Protective Cap, and verify
that the Deflector moves up and
down freely. If the Sprinkler has been
damaged and the Deflector does not
move up and down freely, replace
the entire Sprinkler assembly. Do not
attempt to modify or repair a dam-
aged sprinkler. -·
Step 6. Screw on the Cover Plate/
Retainer Assembly until its flange
just comes in contact with the ceiling.
Do not continue to screw on the
Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly such
that It lifts a celling panel out of Its
normal position. If the Cover Plate/
Retainer Assembly cannot be
engaged with the Support Cup or the
Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly
cannot be engaged sufficiently to
contact the celling, the Sprinkler
Fitting must be repositioned.
