GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 1/2 inch (15mm) orifice Universal
Model A Quick Response Pendent,
Recessed Pendent, and Upright
Sprinklers (Ref. Figure A) are auto-
matic sprinklers of the frangible bulb
type. They are "quick response • stan-
dard orifice spray sprinklers" intended
for use in fire sprinkler systems de-
signed In accordance with the stan-
dard Installation rules recognized by
the applicable Listing or Approval
agency (e.g., UL Listing ls based on
NFPA 13 requirements). The Pendent,
Recessed Pendent, and Upright
Sprinklers all produce a hemispherical
water distribution pattem below the de·
flector.
The recessed versions of the Model A
Sprinkler are obtained by utilizing the
Model A Pendent Sprinkler in combi-
nation with either the Model F700 or
F705 Recessed Escutcheon (Ref. Rg-
uras A and C). The Recessed Escutch-
eons have a separable two-piece de-
sign which allows installation of the
sprinklers and pressure testing of the
fire protection system, prior to ceiling
construction andlor application of a fin-
ish coat to the calling. They also permit

refinishing of a ceiling surface without
having lo first shut down the fire pro-
tection system and remove the sprink-
lers.
The vertical adjustment provided by
the Recessed Escutcoeons substan-
tially reduces the accuracy to which
the length of fixed pipe drops lo the
sprinklers must be cut. Also, the Clo•
sure has a 112 inch (12,7mm) wide
flange which provides ample clear-
ance for covering the mounting hole.
APPROVALS AND STANDARDS
Laboratory listings end approvals for
the 1/2 inch (15mm) orifice Model A
Quick Response Pendent, Recessed
Pendent, and Upright Sprinklers are
given in Table A.
WARNING
The 112 inch orifi,tt Mod.el A Quick
&spon,;e Pendent, &cessed Pendent,
and Upright Sprinklers described
herein must b, installed and main-
tained in compliance with this docu-
ment, as well as applicable standards
of the National Fire Protection Asso-
ciation, in addition to the standards
of any other authorities having juris-
diction. Failure to do so may impair
the integrity of these devices.
The owner is responsible for main-
taining their fire protection system
and devices in proper operating con-
dition. The installing contractor or
manufacturer should b, contacted rel-
ative to any questions.
Installation of Model A Pendent
Sprinklers in rece6sed escutcheons
other than the F700 or F705 will void
all sprinkler wcirranties, as well as
possibly void the sprinkler's Approv-
als and I or Listings.
TECHNICAL DATA
The 1/2 inch (15mm) orifice Model A
Quick Response Pendent, Recessed
Pendent, and Upright Sprinklers are
rated for use al a maximum service
pressure of 175 psi (12, 1 bar) and they
are available in the temperature rat-
ings and finishes indicated In Table A.
Recessed versions of the Model A
Sprinkler are obtained by utilizing the
TD515M
SELECTION:
Sel'OCI the appropriate wrench based on the
following requirements:
• Model A Sprinklers with a natural brass or
chrome plated finish and where the
Wrench Flats shown In Agurs A are accas-
slble, may be be Install ad using an 8 or 10
Inch adjustable Crescent type wrench or
the Model F850 Sprinkler Wrench.
• Model A Sprinklers with a polyester coated
finish must only be lnstallod with the
Model F850 Sprinkler Wrench.
Model A Recessed Pendant Sprinklers
which are to be Installed after completion
of a fixed calHng must only be Installed
with Iha Model F850 Sprinkler Wrench.

When using an 8 or 10 Inch adjustable Crescent type wrench the wrench is to be applied to
the sprinkler wrench flats only (Ref. Figure A). '
To use the FSSO Sprinkler Wrench, slip Iha Wrench opening over the Model A Sprinkler
Deflector by passing the Sprinkler Wrench around the side of the Sprinkler as shown In the
above IUustration.
Using a 1/2 inch ratchet drive or by applying an 8 or 10 inch adjustable wrench to the hex
end of the Sprinkler Wrench, tighten the sprinkler Into the fitting. The two lugs located on
opposite sides of the Wrench Indicate the orientation of the sprinkJer frame arms.
NOTE
Pus.h up on. the Sprinkler Wren.ch, while it is being turned, to ensure: that thi Wrer..ch. recess

Carefully remove tho Sprinkler Wrench by disengaging It from the sprinkler wrench flats, and
then passing It sideways over the sprinkler deflector.

Care must be exercised to avoid dam•
age to the sprinklers -both before
and after installation. Sprinklers dam-
aged by dropping, striking, wrench
twist/slippage, or the like, must be re-
placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that
has a cracked bulb or that has lost
liquid from ils bulb (ref. Installation
Section Note).

A Product Symbol Number (PSN) is
not specified when ordering polyester
coated Model A Sprinklers wllh olher
than a while color; when ordering color
coated Recessed Escutcheons with
other than a white color; or, when or-
dering sprinklers with thread connec-
tions per ISO 7/1. It is suggested that
a color chip be provided when ordering
special color finishes. Otherwise, re-
sponsibility for duplication cannot be
accepted.
