Pirates Cluster Description
The new "Pirates" cluster replaces an existing open lawn area currently identified as the
"Special Events Area." The theme of the proposed rides and attractions will be consistent
with the park's design philosophy of exuberance, creativity, interaction and family fun.
Toddler's Play Attraction
This water interactive area is designed for children in the age range of 3 to 6 years old. The
attraction is DUPLO Pirate themed and focuses on our youngest age group in the park. This
water interactive attraction is themed around four zones where children discover and explore
water play possibilities. Design inspiration comes from specific LEGO toy product lines
DUPLO Pirates. In this cluster we set the frame work for a Pirate adventure and invite our
guests to create their own.
The central feature is a 20 foot interactive LEGO totem, push button activated that the young
children are invited to explore. Pirates fire water from their "blunder buses." Monkeys fire
water from their ears .Tropical plants come to bloom with stunning water effects. A water
crown cascades over the tropical palm tree.
High level buckets tip and spill their contents over awaiting children.
Pirate Bandstand & Viewing Plaza
Parents sitting in this area are comfortably within hand wave distance from their smallest
children. Also this central location offers great views of the attractions within the cluster. The
focal point of the area is a Pirate band situated at its heart. This area is designed as a
relaxation area for the parents where they orientate themselves and then monitor their
children on the various attractions.
Splash Battle Attraction
Our guests are being recruited as Pirates (piracy needs you poster).
How exactly do you become a pirate? As one can imagine they need a little training and
encouragement before they make their Maiden Voyage taking a perilous journey through un-
chartered waters. The chase is on as you take control and captain your family crew keeping
your wits about you as you respond to any eventuality. Whether you are under attack from
her majesties marines, defending a broadside from a rival pirate gang, or navigating shark
infested waters, you are in control.
It's an elaborate game of cat and mouse as you skillfully command your ship and crew in the
open sea.
The proposed Pirate Splash Battle is a low level track ride located within a water trough
system. The four-man vehicles are fitted with water cannons that the guests fire at each
other and various props and models. Viewing guests join in the fun with perimeter water
cannons. This attraction is a family attraction and themed in a traditional pirates design
based on the LEGO Pirate Product. The guests embark on a journey that takes them
through various interactive water zones.
Creative Elements:
A. Pirate Stockade
The Pirates have inhabited the inside of the cave using net and sail between masts to
fashion crude walkways linking bridges and platforms. Ragged sails form back drops. The
Page 1

timber supports are lashed with rope and recessed into the rockwork. Objects from everyday
are dispersed throughout the area (barrels, jugs, livestock, and utensils). A fair pirate
maiden bids us a fond farewell, breaks down and cries uncontrollably, water pumps
vigorously from the eyes (on to guests as they pass). A pirate troubadour with a guitar sings
a reel, shanty describing the epic exploits, warning in a humorous way the perils that lie
ahead. We suddenly hear the rattling of chains at high level and see a wretched colonial
ranting a mad tirade warning his young pirates. His beard hangs 10 feet and a little pirate
puppy has made his home in the beard. He is imprisoned in a cave set into the rock face. A
skeleton lies next to the treasure as a reminder to the last man who tried to steal it.
Shut up you land lubber. We become aware of the pirate king Captain Roger (not Houben),
who silences the raves of our crazed prisoner. He is standing on a rope bridge overlooking
our guests lulling them into a false sense of security. Don't listen to him; you will be fine, just
keep your wits about you.
8. Treasure Island
This small island is the home of a fantastic pirate treasure. Water cascades over the
treasure chest as armed pirate guards keep a vigil. One fat and one thin, the fat one has
fallen asleep on duty and is being disciplined by his colleague. However it is wasted because
he is snoring loudly.
C. The Skull
Our junior pirates become aware of an opening they are quite ·calm until they leave the
safety of the cove and now in the high seas. A water curtain hangs before them, will they be
lucky, or will they be drenched? 'Whoosh" ... the ship leaves the cove with a cavalcade of
water effects spewing from the skulls orifices. "Bang, Bang" ... the sound of cannon fire
echoes as water bombs explode around them. The battle has begun; they are under fire
from her majesties navy.
D. Colonial Island
The colonials are positioned at their outpost armed with heavy cannon. Troops (guests) from
the mainland have crossed the bridge to man the vacant cannons. The pirates are taking a
drumming. As a lesson, a colonial hangs a captured pirate off the bridge feeding him to a
hostile crocodile crying like a baby ... "Mummy, I'm too young to die."
E. Man-Eating Shark (fantastic LEGO model)
"Phew, that was close." What possibly could go wrong, as we enter the open sea and a 30
feet great white shark, leaping like a salmon from the deep blue. His mouth snaps open and
shut as we notice a seaman spitting water from inside his mouth as he props it open with a
broken oar.
F. Volcano Island
As our intrepid seaman make the next turn, they hear the rumble of an erupting volcano.
Water cascades in a crown from its top soaking everyone in its radius. A shipwrecked pirate
warns of even more impending danger. Men are lying in wait and have already taken a
casualty. As they turn starboard, a colonial ship anchored onshore gives another volley as
you make your escape.
Page 2
• •
G. Desert Island
Our wits are ragged, now no more as cannon fire rings through the air, the colonials have a
ship in their sights and are pounding with cannon fire. A regimental sergeant shouts ... "Aim,
load, fire!" ... as a monkey throws coconuts from the tree to bolster his cannonball supply.
H. Sinking Galleon
Major scene. Captain Black's ship is sinking and the crew has abandoned ship and is
fighting for their lives. One is floating in a barrel, three are on a raft and one is hanging from
the mast. They shout for assistance as cannon fire wrings around us. We politely tell him
"no chance mate." This timber ship is finely detailed with broken mast and sail. The ship has
taken a battering. A water effect spews up water from its hull. The mast shows the sign of
Captain Black (a dark and incompetent pirate with blue and black sail.) Dodging the cross
fire we escape the battle and set sail for home ... we are safe now ... or so you think!
I. The Gauntlet
A remotely operated land based interactive. A group of mice have climbed on top of the
pirate lemonade supply barrels and are giggling in a tipsy fashion as they spit water on our
unsuspecting pirates (one peg-legged, one fat, etc.). The scene is framed with landscape;
we see remnants of ropes and pulleys how they have made it up there.
Mini Flume Attraction
This flume ride is designed for younger aged children with families. The theme of the ride is
"Pirates on Vacation." The vehicles have provision for two children and two adults. The
track rises to approx 15 feet at its tallest elevation, the finale of which is a drop into a water
trough. This attraction is based on our "my first ride" concept. .. a place where our youngest
guests will experience their first thrill ride. Of course, Mom and Dad can accompany or ride
on their own for the first time, or Mom and Dad can watch and wave at their brave and
intrepid children.
This attraction has three primary model scenes listed below.
J. Ship Wrecked Island
A solitary island sits in the middle of a shark infested trough. Shark's circle the island. Two
relaxing pirates in Hawaiian shirts lie with radio and a good book, getting in touch with their
feminine side. They are shouting encouragement to their pal, who is digging for treasure in
the wrong spot.
This area is the beach with a jungle back drop. Turtles have inhabited the beach (cute
babies). Monkeys, toucans and parrots are positioned in a palm tree.
K. Pirate Tree House
A pirate is welcoming the guests to this pirate resort ("Pirates on Vacation" concept). Jungle
animals have inhabited the queue around crates full of oranges, biscuits and gags. Parrots
talk in the queue.
L. Pirates in Thermal Spa
A pirate is relaxing naked and a cheeky monkey has stolen his clothes. He stands facing the
guests with his hands over his private parts.
Page 3
• •
M. Spitting African Masks
As a finale to the drop, the travelers pass the African mask heads.
Pirate's Cove Attraction
This attraction is geared to the 6 to 12 age group and offers a multi level interactive water
play experience. The primary focus is on water interaction. The attraction is three levels high
and themed around a pirate ship. This is the secondary attraction in the Pirates Cluster.
Highlights include various water interactive gags and slides. The finale of which is a water
dumping bucket that spills onto the children and parents at low level.
Midway Games
This facility houses four midway games and the associated storage. On the reverse of the
facility is a small retail facility that serves the seating area around the Pirate Bandstand
plaza.
Maintenance and Plant Buildings
There are two maintenance and plant buildings in the area. These facilities house the
mechanical, electrical, water pumping and filtration and other necessary equipment to
support the attractions in the area.
Page 4
• •
East Expansion Area 3 Description
Two new attractions and two retail/food buildings are proposed in the existing "Xtreme"
Cluster (East Expansion Area 3).
Drome Attraction
The 'Drome' attraction is a road racing experience based on the LEGO RACERS product
line and takes its thematic reference from the play material. Guests are invited to race each
other with a focus on competition and self-improvement.
The queue and loading area for the ride is housed in a building in which LEGO models,
graphics, sound, light and video set the mood for the activity. Video of real motor racing
footage focuses on tips and tricks, safety, and the excitement of the race.
Guests can either drive or watch the action. Those who choose to spectate find a position
along the track awaiting the opportunity to support their family members in the race.
Participants in the races enter a queue area (capacity 480) where audio track of engines
rewing, the crowd cheering and burning rubber builds to a crescendo as the racers board
their cars and approach the starting grid. The race cars are designed for children ages six to
twelve and will accommodate an adult and child together.
Once bucked up in the vehicle, racers make their way to the starting grid where they are
confronted with a large L.E.D. time clock, themed graphics and racing sequence lights. The
audio and lights are sequenced with the ride dispatch ... red ... amber ... Go!...the vehicle's
wheels spin into action approaching the first turn.
After the first turn, spectators shout and cheer as their family members drive past the
spectator's zone. The track is divided into 3 distinct zones:
1. Slow -approx. speed 10 KMH
2. Medium -approx. speed 12.5 KMH
3. Fast -approx. speed 15 to 17 KMH
Each of the three race lanes has three separate voltages running through positive and
negative channels that regulate speed. There is flexibility to change the track segments to
enhance guest experience.
The Drome is home of the Dromulus Communication Empire. Within the facility sits a tall
structure on top of which sits the silhouette of Dromulus with his robotic monkey.
Omnipotent, Dromulus plunges his charges into the jungle, desert, city and stunt arena
environments employing still and moving projected images combined with special effects to
stimulate these environments.
As the racers negotiate the turns, audio tracks help to enhance the experience and promote
the mood of speed and movement. After negotiating the twists and turns of the track, the
racer is lead by a small pocket of light back through the tunnel into the main race arena.
Here they pass by themed graphics and scenery as they enter the final turn to a cheering
crowd and an overhead clock informing them of their time.
Interactivity, family participation and competitive racing are the highlights of the Drome
attraction.
Page 5

Aqua Drag Attraction
The Aqua drag is composed of water troughs in which ride vehicles slide down an incline.
Riders compete against the clock or each other for the best time down the slide. This
attraction is geared to the 6 to 12 age group. Audio tracks help to enhance the experience
and promote the mood of speed and movement.
Retail / Food Building "A"
This building will house food services and/or retail sales. The structure is a single level of
approximately 520 sf. The exterior fagade of the building will be themed consistent with the
existing buildings in the Xtreme cluster. Themed signage will relate to the specific use (to be
determined).
Retail Building "B"
This building will house retail sales. The structure is a single level of approximately 1,080 sf.
The exterior fagade of the building will be themed consistent with the existing buildings in the
Xtreme cluster. Themed signage will relate to the specific use (to be determined).

Project Description
Consistency Determination for revisions to the
LEGOLAND Adventurer's Cluster
In September of 2007, the City of Carlsbad approved Consistency Determination #CD
07-14 for site plan revisions and development of attractions in the LEGO LAND
California "Adventure's Cluster" (aka "East Expansion Area 3"). That Consistency
Determination was based on the previously approved Site Development Plan Amendment
#SDP 96-14(B) approved in 2005. Submitted herein is a revision to add four new
features to the Adventurer's Cluster. The proposed features are secondary activities for
the park guest that are of short duration and have small overall footprints. They will have
an Egyptian theme, consistant with the rest of the cluster.
The proposed features and structures are as follows:
Games Structure -A single story 819 s.£ structure. The structure has open sides, a
canvas roof and is designed to shelter two arcade type games from sun and rain.
Storage Building -A single story, 160 s.f. building for the storage of toys that are prize
winnings of the arcade games. The building is of typical wood frame construction with an
exterior finish of plaster and a flat roof.
Ladder Climb -This game is composed of a small rope ladder which children climb to
reach the top. There is an air inflated "pillow" below the ladder to catch the child if
he/she should fall from the ladder. The overall height of the feature is approximately six
feet with a footprint of approximately 17' x 19'.
Coconut Tree Climb-Similar to popular "climbing walls", this version is composed of
three simulated coconut palm trees which the guest climbs. The trees are approximately
25' tall. Climbers are fitted with a harness that safely lowers them to the ground should
they release from the tree trunk.
Existing site.
Previously approved attractions in the Adventurer's Cluster have been constructed and
include the "Lost Kingdom Adventure Ride", "Pharoah's Revenge", "Beetle Bouncer"
and "Cargo Ace". The site for the proposed additions is located west of the existing
attractions on a portion of remaining undeveloped area within the cluster. The existing
site will be regraded to lower the elevation by approximately three feet. Grading spoils
will be stockpiled on the LEGOLAND property at the northern expansion area.
Related site development.
Associated with the proposed development is new paving, railings, landscaping, and
lighting. No new water, sewer or gas services are proposed.
