4.3 Building Access/Doors
Where access is required in CFC Section 503, fire apparatus access roads shall be provided
within 150 feet of all portions of the exterior walls of the first story of the building or
facility as measured by an approved route.
Fire apparatus access roads shall have an unobstructed width of not less than 20 feet,
except for approved security gates in accordance with Section 503.6, and an unobstructed
vertical clearance of not less than 13 feet 6 inches. The fire code official shall have the
authority to require an increase in the minimum access widths where they are inadequate
for fire or rescue operations. Fire apparatus access roads shall be designed and maintained
to support the imposed loads of fire apparatus and shall be surfaced so as to provide all-
weather driving capabilities. The required turning radius of a fire apparatus access road
shall be determined by the fire code official. Dead-end fire apparatus access roads in
excess of 150 feet in length shall be provided with an approved area for turning around fire
apparatus. The grade of the fire apparatus access road shall be within the limits established
by the fire code official based on the fire department's apparatus. Fire department
vehicular access exists on all four sides of the building.
CFC Section 2306.6.1 also states that a minimum of one access door shall be provided in
each 100 lineal feet, or fraction thereof, of the exterior walls which face required fire
apparatus access roads. Emergency vehicle access roads and doors exist on the east of the
building. Access doors are provided in each 100 lineal foot section of exterior wall facing
the required high-piled storage roadway. (Attachment #9)
Access doors have been provided along the exterior wall for the three sides of the
warehouse that face a required access road.
4.4 Smoke and Heat Vents
Per CFC Table 2306.2 and Table 910.3 [as amended by Carlsbad Fire Department], smoke
and heat vents are required at a ratio of 1:40 [one square foot of vent per 40 square feet of
floor area] (Attachment #10).
Per CFC 910.3, where installed in buildings equipped with an approved automatic sprinkler
system, smoke and heat vents shall be designed to operate automatically. The effective
venting area shall not be less than 16 square feet with no dimension less than 4 feet,
excluding ribs or gutters having a total width not exceeding 6 inches. Smoke and heat vents
shall be located 20 feet or more from adjacent lot lines and fire walls and 10 feet or more
from fire barrier walls. Vents shall be uniformly located within the roof area above high-
piled storage areas, with consideration given to roof pitch, draft curtain location, sprinkler
location and structural members.
Smoke and heat vents are existing at a ratio of 1:50. Therefore additional skylights will be
converted to smoke and heat vents.
