Lower end head start pressures allow more pressure to be available to: Reduce Pipe size Increase Spacing Eliminate booster pumps Upgrade existing densities With the Approval of a Tentative Interim Amend- ment by NFPA, the ELO-231 became the first Extra Large Orifice standard spray sprinkler to be allowed for use in NFPA 231 and 2310 occupan- cies with the area/density curves. The minimum operating pressure is 10 psi. This is the only modification of the 231 and 2310 standards. i piim1Tsii Model: ELO-231 Style: Upright or Pendent Orifice Size: 0.64 (16.3 mm) (E.L.O.) Telephone: ±1(616) 945-9501 Fax Number: +1 (616) 945-9599 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Viking Model M Quick Response Extended Coverage Light Hazard Extra Large Orifice Sprinkler (QR-ECLH- ELO), is a thermo-sensilive glass bulb spray sprinkler, equipped with an extra large orifice, and a special deflector. The pip cap and sealing assembly of the sprinkler are held in place by a rugged, fast actuating, 3mm glass bulb. The sprinkler is listed as a quick response sprinkler when installed in the specific spacing, temperature rating, and es- cutcheon combinations indicated on page 71 b. The special deflector is designed to meet light hazard density requirements for specifically listed extended areas of coverage when the required minimum water supply is provided at the sprinkler. The extra large orifice produces the flows required to meet light hazard den- sity requirements at lower pressures than standard orifice or large orifice sprinklers require. Viking Model M QR-ECLH-ELOpcndent sprinklers arc available with finishes and temperature ratings to meet design re- quirements. The special Teflon9 and polyester coatings can be used in deco- rative applications where colors are de- sired. In addition, these two finishes are corrosion resistant and provide protec- tion against many corrosive environ- ments. During fire conditions, when the tem- perature around the sprinkler reaches its operating temperature, the heat sen- sitive liquid in the glass bulb expands, causing the bulb to shatter, releasing the pip cap and sealing spring assembly. The water flowing through the sprinkler orifice strikes the sprinkler deflector forming a uniform spray pattern to extin- guish or control the fire. 4. Apply a small amount of pipe joint compound or tape to the external threads only, taking care not to allow a build up of compound in the sprinkler inlet. Install the sprinkler on the piping using the special sprinkler wrench only, taking care not to damage the sprinkler operating parts. DO NOT use the sprinkler deflector to start or thread the sprinkler into a filling. Alter installation, the entire sprinkler system must be tested in accordance with the recognized installation standards. The lest is applied after the sprinkler installation to insure no damage has occurred to the sprinkler during shipping and installation, and to make sure the sprinkler has been properly tightened. If a thread leak should occur, normally the sprinkler must be removed, new pipe joint compound or tape applied and rein- stalled. This is due to the fact that when the joint scat is damaged, the sealing compound or tape is washed out of the joint. Air testing the sprin- kler piping prior to testing with water may be considered in areas where leakage during testing must be pre- vented. Refer to the Installation Guides, and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Sprinklers must be protected from mechanical damage. Wet pipe sys- loIns must be provided with adequate heat. When installing Model M Quick Response ECU-I ELO Sprinklers on dry systems, refer to the Installation Guides, and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. 0. MAINTENANCE NOTICE: The owner is responsible for maintaining the fire protection system and devices in proper operating condi- tion. For minimum maintenance and in- spection requirements, refer to the Na- tional Fire Protection Association Pam- phlet that describes care and mainte- nance of sprinkler systems. In addition, the "Authority Having Jurisdiction" may have additional maintenance, testing, and inspection requirements which must be followed. A. The Sprinklers must be inspected on a regular basis for corrosion, me- chanical damage, obstructions, paint, etc. The frequency of the in- spections may vary due to corrosive atmospheres, water supplies and ac- tivity around the device. 135°F (57°C), 155°F (60°C), 175°F (79°C) 135°F Deflector Thread - Nominal - Nominal Style - Size Orifice K Factor N.P.T..
