At your request, we have performed a limited Phase II Environmental Site Assessment
(ESA) at the referenced site. Specifically, we collected near-surface soil samples for
analysis at an environmental testing laboratory to evaluate the possibility that these soils
contain agricultural chemicals. The use of agricultural chemicals at this site was
previously identified in a Phase I ESA prepared in 1998 by Converse Consultants. Figure
1 shows the general location of the site.
Soil Sampling and Analysis
During the course of our geotechnical investigation at this site, we collected soil samples
for environmental analysis from each of our seven geotechnical borings. The samples for
environmental laboratory analysis were collected at approximately two to three feet
below grade (fbg). Figure 2 shows the approximate locations of our borings. Boring logs
are appended to this report.
Since the samples were intended to screen for the potential presence of agricultural
chemicals the samples were composited before delivery to the State of California-
certified Pacific Treatment Analytical Services, Inc. (PT AS) laboratory. Three soil
samples were sent to the PTAS laboratory. The samples were designated as follows: B-1,
B-4; B-2, B-3; and, B-5, B-6, B-7. These designations were intended to clarify the
borings from which each composite sample came.
Appropriate protocols (outlined in the San Diego County, Department of Environmental
Health manual) were followed to ensure the integrity of the samples. Additionally, all

samples were retained in an iced cooler immediately following their collection and were
delivered under chain-of-custody protocol.
Each sample was analyzed for: chlorinated herbicides (using EPA Method 8150) and
organochlorine pesticides (using EPA Method 8081). Copies of the complete laboratory
reports (including QNQC data and chain-of-custody) are appended to this report.
Laboratory Results
Presented on the Table below are the results of the laboratory testing. Listed are the
constituents detected in each of the analyzed samples and their concentrations. If a
constituent is not detected it is not listed on the table. For a complete list of the tested
constituents please see that attached laboratory reports. If "none" appears in the
constituents column this indicates that no constituents were detected at the laboratory
detection limits used per the recognized laboratory protocol. For additional quality
control a duplicate sample was analyzed at random. These results are also shown on the
Table below.

Interpretation and Recommendations
The only constituent detected, during the selected analyses, was toxaphene. Toxaphene
is also known as chlorinated camphene. It is an amber, waxy solid that decomposes with
prolonged exposure to sunlight. Per the NIOSH Guide to Chemical Hazards, the
exposure limits are 0.5mg/m3. These levels are several orders of magnitude greater than
the expected concentrations to be encountered during construction at this site.
We anticipate that grading activities (mixing and blending of the soil) will further reduce
the detected concentrations of toxaphene. Additionally, we anticipate that once
construction is complete and the project is covered with asphalt and concrete pavements
that exposure of workers or customers is not expected to be a concern.
Once grading is complete, we recommend that additional soil samples be collected and
analyzed to determine their concentrations of toxaphene. If additional actions are

required, they can be implemented at that time. Examples of additional actions would
include thicker concrete slabs or the placement of vapor barriers.
