Dear Mr. Camarena, In response to your request, Southwest Inspection and Testing, Inc. (Southwest) has prepared this certification letter for proposed various site improvements and modifications for Kinovate Life Sciences, located at 1935 Camino Vida Roble in the City of Carlsbad, California. Southwest is the current geotechnical engineer of record during the construction phase of this tenant improvements project. Southwest's technicians observed and conducted field compaction tests for various site improvements and modifications between February 9, 2024 and October 1, 2025 on a full- and part-time basis as requested by the jobsite superintendent. Excavation within the grading limits for the subject tank pad was made 2 feet below the existing grade. After excavation, subgrade soils at the removal bottom were scarified within upper minimum 12 inches, moisture conditioned (adding water as needed) to within 3 percent of the optimum moisture, and compacted to minimum 95 percent (ASTM D1557). Fill soils up to the final pad level were placed in thin lifts - loose lift thickness not exceeding 8 inches - moisture- conditioned (adding water as needed) to within 3 percent of the optimum moisture, and compacted to the specified relative compactions for soils as noted below. Excavated onsite soils that were cleared of vegetation, debris and large size particles (larger than 3 inches in the maximum dimension) were reused as fill soils. Field density test results during grading indicate that the graded fill soils were placed to minimum relative compactions of 95 percent and 90 percent (per ASTM D1557) for granular and cohesive soils, respectively. Base materials for driveways, parking lots, at the locations tested, were compacted to minimum 95 percent of the maximum Proctor Density (ASTM D1557). Asphalt concrete for the driveways, parking lots was compacted to minimum 95 percent of the Marshall maximum density (per ASTM D1559), which was provided by the materials supplier. Maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of a representative bulk sample of the onsite soils were determined in accordance with ASTM Test Method D1557 (Modified Proctor). Field compaction tests for density and moisture of the graded soils were performed using both the Sand Cone (ASTM D1556) and Nuclear Gauge (ASTM D6938) Methods. During grading, areas that did not meet the compaction criteria were reworked and retested until the intended relative compactions were attained. Grading for soil subgrade for the various site improvements and modification was performed utilizing an excavator, a skip loader, and a sheepsfoot drum roller. All laboratory tests for onsite soil and import base samples during grading (e.g., Proctor Density Tests) are conducted in our laboratory. All field density tests during grading are conducted by qualified soils technicians from our laboratory. Based on our findings from field observation and field compaction tests, grading for the soil subgrade, base and asphalt for the various site improvements and modifications was performed in adequate compliance with the recommendations in the referenced geotechnical report and project’s grading plans.
