CALL TO ORDER: 4 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Waidelich, McBride, Sheffler, Laufer (Moran -Absent).

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Vice Chair Waidelich led the Pledge of Allegiance.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes of the regular meeting held Jan. 28, 2026
Motion by Trustee Laufer, seconded by Trustee McBride to approve the minutes as presented .
Motion carried, 4/0/1 (Moran -Absent)

DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
Prior to Departmental Reports, Deputy Library Director Sheila Crosby introduced new personnel
to the board.
1. LIBRARY REPORTS FOR JANUARY 2026 and FEBRUARY 2026: Receive the Narrative Reports
and Statistical Reports for January 2026 and February 2026 (Staff contact: Laura Stanger,
Library & Cultural Arts Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the reports.
The Board received the reports.
2. COLLECTIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES: Receive an overview of the library's Collections &
Technical Services. (Staff contact: Katy Duperry and Jacqueline Petri, Library & Cultural Arts
Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.

Senior Librarian Katy Duperry and Librarian Jacqui Petri shared a Power Point presentation
(on file in the Office of the City Clerk).
Trustee Sheffler inquired about the prioritization of patron requests for materials not in the
library's collection. Jacqui Petri responded that the item is evaluated against the criteria
established in the library's Collection Development Policy.
Trustee Laufer inquired if staff use the New York Times and other book reviews to select
materials. Katy Duperry and Jacqui Petri responded that staff do use the New York Times and
other various trade and professional publications to assist in material selection.
Vice Chair Waidelich inquired about how a patron can request the library purchase an item
for the collection. Jacqui Petri responded that patrons may submit a Purchase Request form
available on the library's webpage for material suggestions.
3. YOUTH READING ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES: Receive a report on three of the library's youth
reading engagement initiatives. (Staff contacts: Marin Faeyera, Allyson Goodwin and Ashleigh
Hvinden, Library & Cultural Arts Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.
The Board received the report.

a Power Point presentation (on file in the Office of the City Clerk).
4. CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER 2026: Receive a report from staff on programs and events
scheduled for Carlsbad Reads Together 2026. (Staff contact: Emily Hardy and Ruben
Valenzuela, Library & Cultural Arts Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.

presentation (on file in the Office of the City Clerk).

BOARD MEMBER COMMENTARY AND REQUESTS FOR CONSIDERATION OF MATTERS: The
Board Members reported on activities they attended.
Trustee Sheffler inquired about the library1s plans for marking the nation's 250-year anniversary,
noting that the milestone offers a meaningful opportunity for community engagement and not
doing so could reflect poorly on the organization.
Trustee McBride reported that the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation is currently determining
the amount of endowment funding to be distributed to the Library & Cultural Arts Department.
The foundation recently donated $45,000.00 to the City of Carlsbad's Sculpture Garden exhibit
"Percussion Play". The foundation will continue to support the arts tables and dance lessons
offered at the TGIF Concerts in the Parks series.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: This section of the Agenda is designated for announcements to advise the
community regarding events that Members of the Library Board of Trustees have been invited
to, and may participate in.
STAFF COMMENTS: Deputy Library Director Sheila Crosby shared comments.
