ADULTS 50+ ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS
DEPARTMENT REPORT
April 23, 2026
GENERAL
Commission Work Plan Goal 1: Determine the needs of adults 50+
Staff continued to integrate community feedback into programming and outreach for adults 50 and older.
•Your Morning Music with a Slice of History has quickly become a popular new offering, selling
out its first of four sessions with more than 30 attendees.
•The nutrition team submits feedback to Meals on Wheels on a weekly basis, ensuring quality
meals that reflect community preferences. This effort is supported through the collection of
daily comment cards and the annual Nutrition Customer Satisfaction Survey.
Commission Work Plan Goal 2: Support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan
Senior Center programming supported multiple domains of the Age-Friendly framework.
•Volunteer instructors led a ‘sold out’ Karate for Self-Defense workshop, demonstrating important
tactics for the personal safety of seniors.
• The Senior Center partnered with Circulate San Diego to host a presentation on age-friendly
mobility, equipping attendees with tools to navigate San Diego’s public transit options.
• Seniors enjoyed a free Radical Raptor Avian Experience, meeting live birds of prey from the Avian
Behavior Conservancy.
• Staff launched a Repotting Party for Earth Month, offering seniors hands-on guidance in caring
for and upsizing their houseplants. Volunteers also refreshed the courtyard garden.
Commission Work Plan Goal 3: Create Adult 50+ opportunities & collaborations beyond Senior Center
Programs and partnerships extended the Senior Center’s impact beyond its physical location.
• Two new excursions extended the Adults 50+ opportunities reach to first-time participants. In
March, patrons explored sifting for gemstones at the Oceanview Mine; in April, patrons attended
the Goodguys Car Show in Del Mar.
•A new partnership with Persian Place brings monthly cultural art activities to the Senior Center.
In April, 26, 2026, patrons attended Persian Woodblock Printing, with more on the waitlist.
•AARP volunteer tax services concluded on April 14, 2026, completing 953 federal and 943 state
tax returns in 21 service days.
Commission Work Plan Goal 4: Increase social inclusion, enhance connectivity & minimize isolation
Programs and communications promoted engagement, digital access, and intergenerational experiences.
• Seniors celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with corned beef and live Irish music performed by
congregate volunteer musicians Rich, Frank, and Lou.
•Saturday intergenerational programming continued with the Saturday Game Exchange,
Landscape Art, and a Student Piano Showcase, providing meaningful opportunities across
generations.
•Two new Carlsbad Cruiser hikes have been added, including Saturdays at Batiquitos Lagoon led
by volunteer Lynn, and Wednesdays along Carlsbad State Beach led by Commissioner Freedland.
