SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS:
PRIOR TO PERMIT PROCESSING, APPLICANT MUST SUBMIT ALL ITEMS BELOW: 1. Sign/Site Plans
Application for sign permits require plans be submitted consisting of a minimum of a title sheet, site plan and sign elevations containing the following information*:
1. Project Name 2. Site Address 3. Applicants contact information: Name, address, phone number and email 4. North arrow and scale.
5. Location of existing buildings or structures, parking areas, and vehicular access points to the property. For monument/ground mounted signs, provide location of the sign relative to existing
driveways, easements, objects, mature landscaping, and city right-of-way. 6. Location of all existing and proposed signs for the property. 7. Distance to the property line(s) for all proposed freestanding sign(s). 8. Provide an elevation for all proposed sign(s) which specifies the following:
A. Dimensions and area (square feet) for all existing and proposed sign(s). B. Materials and color the sign(s) will be constructed of. C. Type of mounting D. Source of Illumination, if any. E. Proposed sign copy (text/lettering/design of proposed sign).
*Additional supporting information may be required from applicant depending on standards, requirements, scope, design and/or property constraints. 2. Re: Lot 1-2 – BREG Wall Sign Review Dear Ms. Walls, The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) of the Carlsbad Research Center (CRC) has
reviewed your updated wall sign plans submitted on behalf of your tenant, BREG Inc., for your building located at 2382 Faraday Avenue, on CRC lot 1-2. Per initial review of the proposed BREG wall sign, the ARC provided direction via email on February 11, 2026 requiring modifications based on prior approved installation methods,
specifically, requiring the sign to be mounted on a raceway with brackets extending over the parapet, rather than adhered directly to the glass, to protect the building’s integrity and avoid potential glass damage. Additionally, on March 4, 2026, the ARC received via email a detailed reconsideration request from you Ms. Walls, outlining industry standards and the practical and aesthetic reasons for your preferred installation method, thus the ARC conducted a second
review. The committee considered the applicant’s concerns regarding roof penetrations, structural complications, and overall costs, as well as assurances that replacement glass was available. Despite this reconsideration and thoughtful discussion, the ARC ultimately reaffirmed its original position.
The ARC received revised sign plans, dated April 20, 2026, showing that the proposed BREG wall sign would be installed via the required installation method as identified by the ARC. The updated plans comply with the CRC Design Guidelines and ARC requirements and therefore are considered APPROVED as submitted.
You may proceed with the construction and installation of your sign once a sign permit is obtained from the City of Carlsbad. Please forward a copy of your city sign permit to: Mrs. Andrea Tagle
