UPDATE GEOTECHNICAL/COASTAL REPORT
TIERRA DEL ORO PROPERTY
CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA
Dear Mr. Weldon:
In accordance with our agreement dated January 23, 1990 and signed by you on
January 26, 1990, we have made an update study of the subject property. The site
consists of Lot 16 of Map No. 3052 in the City of Carlsbad, California and is located on
the west side of Tierra Del Oro Street. A Geotechnical Investigation and Coastal
Engineering study was made by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) and a report issued
on October 26, 1988. The scope of our update study is to review the previous work, make
a general visual reconnaissance of the property, and prepare a letter report. The purpose of
the letter report is to document any obvious significant changes in site conditions and to
provide additional geotechnical or coastal engineering recommendations, if required.
It is our understanding from Mrs. Debra L. Fischer, that the proposed residence has been
redesigned so that it lies entirely behind the indicated string lines on the survey and
topography plan prepared by Brian Smith Engineers, Inc. and dated September 6, 1988. It
is further understood that the main floor elevation will be approximately +45.25 feet and
that the lower finish floor elevation will be approximately +36.0 feet (plan datum).
EXISTING SITE CONDITIONS
The writer made a visual observation of the site on January 22, 1990. This site visit
revealed that site conditions are generally similar to those indicated in our October 26, 1988
report. There has been some additional minor erosion of the exposed near vertical terrace
bluff (less than 12 inches average) and the cobbles have generally been removed from the
exposed sandstone surface (Santiago formation) west of the bluff. The cobble berm in this
area has also generally been moved out and spread on the beach and the sandy/cobble beach
appeared to be slightly lower than at the time of our previous study.
CONCLUSIONS
It is our opinion, based on our current understanding of the proposed construction, our
review of the previous studies, and our visual observations of the site, that the geotechnical
and coastal engineering design recommendations presented in our October 26, 1988 report
are still valid for the subject project. The uncertainty and limitations indicated in the report

also apply to this update study. We recommend that WCC review the final grading,
foundation, and revetment design plans to verify that the intent of the recommendations
presented in our October 26, 1988 report have been properly interpreted and incorporated
into the contract documents.
