Previous Project Success:
If your organization has completed a similar project, please provide details of the project and why it was
successful.
For over 40 years, the Carlsbad High School Musical Production has been a cornerstone of Carlsbad’s cultural
life. As a community-based educational program, it has become a cherished tradition, recognized through the
inclusion of Carlsbad High School musical memorabilia in the Carlsbad Historical Society’s displays.
The productions’ quality is demonstrated by consistent recognition from the Broadway San Diego Awards.
Andrea Schuck (Carlsbad High School), and Olivia Hardy (Valley Middle School)—are alumni of this program.
This year’s guest choreographers are also alumni, continuing a legacy of excellence.
The program holds a unique and important place in the community. It is often the first “real” theatre
experience for Carlsbad children, and senior audience members particularly enjoy the productions, with
matinee performances popular among those who prefer daytime events.
Project Distinction:
What makes this project distinctive?
The proposed project provides high school students the opportunity to experience musical theatre without
any cost to participate. There is no fee for students or their families, ensuring that economic barriers do not
prevent involvement.
Additionally, the program offers dance instruction outside of the school’s competitive dance team structure.
While Carlsbad High School has an award-winning dance program with the Lancer Dancers and Xcalibur
teams, the spring semester is fully devoted to defending national titles. As a result, actors and singers make
up the majority of the musical cast. Guest choreographers provide specialized instruction to teach these
students the dance steps required to bring their roles to life on stage, ensuring a fully realized and
professional-quality production.

Project Goals:
What are the goals (outputs and/or outcomes) of the project? How will you measure your goals?
The goal of the Carlsbad High School Musical Production is to provide a life-long arts learning experience for
students while creating a performance that is accessible to the entire Carlsbad community. Student
engagement is the hallmark of the Carlsbad High School Musical Productions. Every day during the rehearsal
process, the students make new artistic choices, learning new styles and types of dance, discovering that they
are truly multi-talented. Each year a different type of musical is chosen by the director; during the course of a
student’s time at Carlsbad High School, they will have experienced many different types of musical theatre.
Individual incremental daily and weekly student progress evaluated by the director, choreographer, and
music director during rehearsals will result in a finished production.
In order to measure the effectiveness of arts instruction, the students in the Carlsbad High School Musical
Production will be judged and reviewed by evaluators from the Broadway San Diego Awards. Feedback from
the audience is also carefully considered. The director often receives emails and letters from audience
members who are not connected in any way with the students (particularly members of the area’s senior
population) that say how astonished they are at the quality of Carlsbad High School’s Musical Productions.

Subject: Grant Application for CHS Theater Program Enhancement
Dear Members of the Arts Commission,
On behalf of the Carlsbad High School Theater Department, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for your
continued support of the performing arts in our schools. Your previous grants have been incredibly beneficial to our
program, allowing us to maintain a high standard of production that resonates with our students and the broader
Carlsbad community.
We are writing today to formally submit our application for a new grant to further modernize our department. While
our performers are the heart of our shows, the technical infrastructure behind the curtain is what truly brings their
stories to life. This year, we are seeking funding specifically focused on two vital pillars of our program: Stage
Technology and Costume Design.
The CHS Theater Department serves as a creative hub for hundreds of students, many of whom pursue careers in
the arts. By enhancing our technical capabilities, we aren't just putting on a better show; we are providing a
"hands-on lab" where students learn problem-solving, engineering, and collaborative design.
We are incredibly proud to be part of a city that recognizes the arts as a vital component of a vibrant community.
Thank you for considering our proposal and for your ongoing commitment to the next generation of Carlsbad artists
and technicians.
Sincerely
Julie Redfield
Principal
