FISCAL YEAR 2026-27 GRANT AGREEMENT FOR
NEW VILLAGE ARTS THEATRE INC.
This agreement is made on the ________ day of ____________, 2026, by New Village Arts Theatre Inc.
hereinafter referred to as “Grantee,” and the CITY OF CARLSBAD, California, a municipal corporation,
hereinafter referred to as “City” (the “Agreement”). City, as Grantor, agrees to provide Grantee the Grant
funds awarded to Grantee during the Fiscal Year 2026-27 Community Arts Grants Program Arts Projects
for Arts Organizations in an amount not to exceed Six thousand twenty six dollars and seventy cents
($6,026.70) (“Grant”). The purpose of the Grant is to provide funds to Grantee for the Project outlined in
the Agreement Scope (“Agreement Scope”), attached hereto as Exhibit “A.”
Project Title: NVA's 25th Anniversary: AS YOU LIKE IT The Musical
The Grant provided herein is comprised of public funds. Therefore, to ensure that the public funds are
used for a public purpose, in accordance with the law, the City and Grantee hereby agree to the following
terms.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF GRANT
1. TERM.
The term of this Agreement shall mean the period commencing on the execution date of this Agreement
and expiring on Oct. 1, 2027. The term of this Agreement may be extended by mutual written agreement
of the parties. The parties will prepare a written amendment indicating the effective date and length of
extended Agreement.

3. USE OF COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS PROCEEDS.
3.1. Grant funds are to be disbursed as outlined in this Agreement in consideration of and on
condition that the sum be expended in carrying out the purpose as set forth in the Agreement
Scope and under the terms and conditions set forth in this Agreement. Grantee agrees to
assume any obligation to furnish any additional funds that may be necessary to complete the
Agreement Scope.
3.2. In accordance with the Agreement Scope and the Fiscal Year 2026-27 Community Arts Grants
Guidelines (Exhibit “A”), all Grant funds are eligible to be used from Sept. 3, 2026 through
Sept. 3, 2027. Any extension of fund use must be requested in writing at least 30 days prior to
the end of the Agreement or sooner to allow time for written amendment and approval in
writing by City. Extension of Fiscal Year 2026-27 Community Arts Grants funds may render that
organization ineligible to apply for or receive additional funds as part of the subsequent Fiscal
Year 2027-28 Community Arts Grants cycle.
3.3. All costs accrued for services and/or supplies prior to the execution of Agreement are not
eligible for funding or reimbursement with Grant proceeds.
3.4. Eligible and ineligible costs include, but are not limited to, items detailed in the Fiscal Year
2026-27 Community Arts Grants Guidelines, in the section titled “Eligible and Ineligible Costs,”
attached hereto as Exhibit “A.”
4. CONDITIONS OF FUNDING AND DISBURSEMENT.
4.1. Definitions. The Parties agree to the following definitions.
4.1.1. “Project” means the work, activities, and deliverables proposed by the Grantee in
the Community Arts Grant 2026-2027 application and approved by the Arts Commission,

as may be further detailed in the Agreement Scope, attached hereto as Exhibit “A.”
4.2. City shall have no obligation to provide the Grant proceeds or to make any subsequent disbursement of Grant
proceeds, and may seek reimbursement of Grant proceeds, if any of the following requirements are not
fully satisfied:
a. Grantee shall use Grant funds to implement the Agreement Scope, including using the
Grant funds to cover only expenditures for programs and services incurred during the
Agreement Scope dates and under the terms and conditions of this Agreement.
b. Grantee shall certify that the Agreement Scope is within Carlsbad city limits or
that the Grantee’s main address is within Carlsbad city limits, as specified in the
Fiscal Year 2026-27 Community Arts Grants Guidelines.
c. Grantee shall complete all work in accordance with Agreement Scope, as soon as
possible, but in no case later than thirty (30) calendar days after the Agreement Scope
end date or, Oct. 1, 2027, whichever is earlier. Grantee shall notify the City of events or
proposed changes that could affect the Agreement Scope.
d. The Grantee shall be responsible for the performance of the Agreement Scope as set
forth herein, and for the preparation of reports required by this Agreement.
e. Before Grantee makes any material changes to the Agreement Scope, Grantee will inform
City’s Cultural Arts Manager or designee in writing within ten (10) working days of the
decision to implement said change. City may request documentation to support the change,
and Grantee agrees to submit to the City, in writing, the proposal requesting modifications
to the Agreement Scope. Grantee shall make no material changes to the Agreement Scope
unless and until City formally approves the Grantee’s request in writing.
f. The Grantee shall provide complete and timely information to the City regarding Project
activities, in accordance with the Agreement Scope, including notification of all
scheduled activities at least thirty (30) days prior to each event to City’s Cultural Arts
Manager or designee.
g. The Grantee shall also acknowledge the City in all related publications and social media
posts, in both digital and print formats, as applicable.
h. Grantee shall retain all records and supporting documentation, including expenditure
receipts, applicable to the Agreement Scope and this Agreement for a period of three
(3) years, and make all records and supporting documentation readily available, upon
request, for inspection and/or audit by representatives of the City.
5. EVENT/PROGRAM PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES.
Grantee has the option to supply event and/or program information including the date, location, time,
admission, parking and related details for inclusion in Cultural Arts’ communications such as e-newsletter,
emails and website. At its discretion, the Cultural Arts Office will provide support in distributing the
information through the City’s established channels of communication. If Grantee wishes to participate,
Grantee must submit the information to the Cultural Arts Office at least sixty (60) days prior to the event
or program.

6. PUBLIC ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.
Grantee must acknowledge the Cultural Arts Office for its support of the Project in printed, electronic
and/or broadcast promotions. The following acknowledgment along with a City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts
logo must appear on all printed and electronic materials: “This program is funded in part by the City of
Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office.” This logo and guidelines for acknowledgment are available on the

Community Arts Grants webpage or upon request. Grantees who fail to provide public acknowledgment
may be denied future Community Arts Grant funding.
7. RETURN OF GRANT FUNDS.
If City determines that Grantee has failed to comply with the terms and conditions of this Agreement
without prior written approval by the City, then, upon demand by the City, Grantee agrees to return to
the City the amount requested by the City, up to and including an amount equivalent to the full Grant
award. Failure of the Grantee to comply with the terms of this Agreement shall not be the cause for return
of Grant funds if, in the judgement of the City, such failure was due to no fault of the Grantee. In such case,
any amount required to settle, at minimum cost, any irrevocable obligations properly incurred by Grantee
shall be eligible to be paid by Grant funds. However, if, due to a local health order, Grantee is unable to
complete all events or requirements of the Scope of Grant, Grantee may be required to return up to the
full amount of the award or a prorated amount based on the percentage of the work completed.
8. REQUIRED REPORTS.
Grantee must provide to City the following reports. Failure to provide the reports may render Grantee
ineligible to receive the full and final payment of the Grant award.
8.1. Submit a Revised Project Form available upon request, as required per the Fiscal Year
2026-27 Community Arts Grants Guidelines, attached hereto as Exhibit “A,” within thirty
(30) days of Grant award notification if project shifted from stated goals in the original
Agreement Scope (Exhibit “A”).
8.2. Submit a Final Report including all required attachments by completing the designated form to
the City (30) calendar days after the Agreement Scope end date or, Oct. 1, 2027, whichever is
earlier through Foundant: Grantlife Manager.
8.3. Noncompliance: Grantees in noncompliance with the above reporting requirements agree to
return some or all the initial Grant payment if requested by the City. Additionally, if Grantee is
found to be in noncompliance, Grantee agrees that for the year immediately following a
determination of noncompliance, Grantee shall be ineligible to receive any new grants from
the City.
9. DISBURSEMENT OF GRANT FUNDS.
The Grant amount to be provided to the grantee under this Agreement may be disbursed as follows:
9.1. First payment of 80 percent of Grant will be disbursed upon approval of Revised Project Form as
applicable, and receipt of fully executed.
9.2. Final payment of 20 percent of Grant will be disbursed upon receipt of Final Report and
approval by Library & Cultural Arts Director or designee.
9.3. Any payment of a Grant amount more than the costs required to complete the Agreement Scope
shall be returned to the City within sixty (60) days of completion of the Agreement Scope or the
Project end date, whichever is earliest.
10. PROJECT CANCELLATION.
10.1. If a Grantee wishes to cancel the Project outlined in the Agreement Scope (Exhibit “A”) at any
time, Grantee shall notify the City in writing within fifteen (15) calendar days of the decision to
cancel and Grantee, at the time it provides the City with notice of cancellation, shall return all
Grant funds to the City.
10.2. In the event an approved Agreement Scope (Exhibit “A”) cannot be completed for any reason,
and if Grant funds were disbursed to Grantee, Grantee agrees to return all Grant funds to the
City forthwith.
11. PROJECT MODIFICATION OR TERMINATION.
11.1. Grantee may unilaterally rescind this Agreement at any time prior to the commencement of

the Project, or prior to first disbursement of funds. After Project commencement, as outlined in
the Agreement Scope, or disbursement of Grant funds, this Agreement may be rescinded,
modified, or amended only by mutual agreement, in writing, of both the City and Grantee.
11.2. Any changes, whether planned or unanticipated, to funded projects due to a local health order
(including, but not limited to, state or local health orders and social distancing measures) must
be submitted to City at least seven (7) calendar days before implementation of the change.
Proposed modifications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and the City's Cultural Arts
Manager or designee will notify Grantee in writing whether the proposed changes are approved.
Any changes must continue to adhere to the City’s Fiscal Year 2026-27 Community Arts Grants
Guidelines as defined in Exhibit “A.”
12. LOSS OF GRANT.
At the discretion of the City, the following actions may result in a loss of all or in part of any Grant amount
allocated to the Grantee:
12.1. A Grantee fails to enter into a signed Agreement with the City within thirty (30) calendar days
of receipt of the Agreement.
12.2. Activities associated with Grantee occur that do not align with activities described in the
Agreement Scope, including, but not limited to, reduction in services, significant alteration of
Agreement Scope elements, such as performers, artists or attendees, or significant changes in
Grantee’s budget: income, expenses, or line-item designations, included in the Agreement
Scope.
12.3. A Grantee withdraws or terminates the Agreement Scope.
12.4. A Grantee fails to complete the Agreement Scope and/or fails to submit all required
reports and/or documentation before Oct. 1, 2027.
13. COVENANT AGAINST DISCRIMINATION.
Grantee will comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations prohibiting
discrimination and harassment. Grantee agrees that neither it nor its agents shall discriminate against any
clients, prospective clients, employees, prospective employees, contractors, or prospective contractors
on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or familial status or other protected
classification.
14. NOTICES.
14.1. Listed below are the names and addresses of the persons who are authorized to give
written notices and to receive written notices on behalf of City and on behalf of Grantee
under this Agreement.
14.2. Each party will notify the other immediately of any changes of address that would require
any notice or delivery to be directed to another address.

15. INDEMNIFICATION.
Grantee hereby agrees to defend (with counsel approved by City), indemnify, and hold free and harmless
the City, its officers, officials, employees and volunteers from and against any and all claims, damages,
losses, costs (including but not limited to attorney's fees) and liabilities of any kind arising directly or
indirectly out of, or related in any way whatsoever to the provision of Grant proceeds.

16. NO PARTNERSHIP OR JOINT VENTURE.
The relationship between City and Grantee is solely that of Grantor and Grantee. Under no circumstances
shall City and Grantee be deemed to have created a partnership, joint venture, agency, or any other form
of legal association that would impose liability upon one party for any act or failure to act by the other
party.
17. MODIFICATIONS.
This Agreement may not be modified or amended except by written document duly executed by an
authorized representative of both the City and the Grantee.
18. GOVERNING LAW.
This Agreement shall be construed in accordance with and be governed by the laws of the State of
California regardless of conflict of laws principles. Venue, in the event of a dispute, shall be in the North
San Diego County Superior Court.
19. SEVERABILITY.
In the event that any provision or clause of this Agreement conflicts with applicable law, such conflict shall
not affect other provisions of this Agreement, which can be given effect without the conflicting provision.
To this end, the provisions of this Agreement are declared to be severable.
20. DRAFTING AMBIGUITIES.
Grantee understands and is aware that it has the right to be advised by counsel with respect to the
negotiations, terms and conditions of this Agreement, and that the decision to seek advice of counsel is
the sole responsibility of Grantee. The Parties negotiated this Agreement with the opportunity to receive
the aid of counsel and, accordingly, intend this Agreement to be construed fairly, according to its terms,
in plain English, without constructive presumptions against the drafting Party.
21. SIGNING AUTHORITY.
The representative for each Party signing on behalf of a corporation, partnership, joint venture or
governmental entity hereby declares that authority has been obtained to sign on behalf of the
corporation, partnership, joint venture, or entity and agrees to hold the other Party or Parties hereto
harmless if it is later determined that such authority does not exist.

COMMUNITY ARTS
GRANTS GUIDELINES
WELCOME
The City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office serves to encourage, develop and facilitate an enriched environment of artistic,
creative and cultural activity in the City of Carlsbad and the North San Diego County region. The Cultural Arts Office manages
funding programs to provide financial support to organizations, schools and individuals for various projects through a
competitive application and review process. These projects benefit the community through an array of activities for schools,
artists and organizations. The Community Arts Grants program was identified for continued and increasing support by the
Carlsbad City Council through the 2018 Arts & Culture Master Plan.
The City of Carlsbad’s Community Arts Grants program supports quality arts and cultural programming that promotes the representation and participation of diverse groups of individuals, including and not limited to people of differing abilities,
class, generations, ethnicities and races, gender identities, religious or spiritual beliefs, sexual orientations, or veteran status.
Our mission supports the following values:
•Provide inclusive opportunities for arts & culture experiences for Carlsbad students and residents
reducing/eliminating barriers for participation.
•Provide arts education and lifelong learning opportunities for all ages.
•Support local and regional arts organizations as an important component of the economy and quality of life in
Carlsbad and North San Diego County.
•Support arts education in schools and through affiliated organizations.
•Develop and support organizational strength and capacity of Carlsbad arts organizations.
•Encourage new and emerging artists, arts organizations and programs in Carlsbad, CA.
•Celebrate Carlsbad as an exciting, vibrant and creative destination for residents and visitors alike.
•Acknowledge indigenous land and cultural awareness in the Carlsbad community.
FISCAL YEAR 2026-27 OVERVIEW
The updated FY 2026-27 guidelines reflect national grantmaking trends and best practices and support funding for artists and
arts organizations in Carlsbad and surrounding areas. Guidelines were approved by the City of Carlsbad’s Arts Commission on
Feb. 5, 2026.
Total funding available for the FY 2026-27 cycle is $117,128. All final reports are due within 30 days of the completion of the
event or Friday, Oct. 1, 2027 whichever comes first. The first 80% of all funds awarded will be disbursed after agreements are
executed and by Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, grant start date; the final 20% once the final report and budget are submitted and
approved.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Grantees are asked to remain vigilant and informed of health and safety requirements, including mandated protocols as
outlined by state, county, local or other governmental bodies always. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of the
agreement and grant funds.
Important dates for the FY 2026-27 grant cycle application are as follows:
•Applications open: Friday, Feb. 13, 2026
•Applications due: Friday, Mar. 27, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PST
•Arts Commission Funding Plan review & approval: Thursday, May 7, 2026, subject to change
•Funding cycle begins Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026
•All projects must be completed by Friday, Sept. 3, 2027
•Applications can be accessed online.

UPDATES FOR THIS YEAR
•EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND AFFILIATED GROUPS – ARTS IN SCHOOLS: Award funds within the "Educational
Institutions And Affiliated Groups – Arts In Schools" category will receive a fixed amount divided between all accepted
grantees, with a maximum award of $3,500 per grant.
•EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS APPLICATION LIMIT: There is a cap on the number of applications for Educational
Institutions (Arts in Schools) of (3) three grants per school site. For detailed requirements, please refer to the Arts in
Schools Requirements section.
•GRANT ELIGIBILITY: Applicants currently receiving funding from the City of Carlsbad under an active professional
services agreement or grant other than a Community Arts Grant are ineligible to apply for a Community Arts Grant.
ELIGIBILITY FOR ALL APPLICANTS; IMPORTANT: READ CAREFULLY
All applicants, including fiscal agents and school-affiliated groups, must comply with the following:
•Nonprofit Status: Applicants must be recognized as nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations by the Internal Revenue
Service (IRS) or the California State Franchise Tax Board. A complete Statement of Information should be on file with
the California Secretary of State. This statement should be filed within the first 90 (ninety) days of incorporation and
updated in accordance with state law.
•Tax Identification: Applicants must provide their Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) from the IRS.
Information will be checked through GuideStar’s Charity Check.
•PLEASE NOTE: all organizations, including schools, must submit the names and contact information for the authorized
signatories. Applications that do not identify the correct signatories for an organization or school will not be accepted.
•Specific exemptions for Educational Institutions: Educational institutions are exempt from the need for tax-exempt
status under Section 501(c)(3) but are still eligible to apply.
•Partnership Projects: For projects involving partnerships, only one (1) application is allowed. If a school partners with
an arts organization or artist, a signed agreement between the parties is required, with the school as the lead
applicant.
•Must not be currently receiving funding from the City of Carlsbad under an active professional services agreement or
grant other than a Community Arts Grant.
APPLICATION PROCESS
When applying, organizations must ensure the following:
•Proof of nonprofit status: Provide evidence of nonprofit status or details of a fiscal agent.
•Statement of Information: Submit a current California Statement of Information reflecting Active Status, along with a
list of Authorized Signatories, their signing authority, and the type of authority (individual or joint).

FISCAL YEAR 2026-27 FUNDING CATEGORIES
Funding is structured by the classification of each organization, then according to available categories. Applicants may only
apply to one category per grant cycle:
•Arts Organizations or Fiscal Agents of Organizations - $7,500 maximum award per grant
•Emerging Arts Organizations - $5,000 maximum award per grant
•Educational Institutions and Affiliated Groups (Arts in Schools) - $3,500 maximum award per grant. Three (3) grants
maximum per school site per year.

ARTS ORGANIZATIONS
•Arts organizations must be registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations for at least three (3) years as of Jan. 1, 2026.
•Applicants may only submit one (1) application per funding cycle and cannot apply to multiple categories.
•Arts organizations grants - $7,500 maximum award per grant.
•All arts projects require the participation of a professional artist or an outside subject matter expert.
•Arts projects will be defined as programs, activities, and events primarily designed to be arts focused. These projects may
be presented in person, or virtually if any government issued health mandates are in effect.
•Arts project grants awards must be used for specific art project support and cannot be used for general operating support.
EMERGING ARTS ORGANIZATIONS
•Emerging arts organization must be based in Carlsbad, CA.
•These grants are for smaller nonprofit organizations that are relatively new to the nonprofit community.
•Emerging arts organizations - $5,000 maximum award per grant.
•Must have a nonprofit 501(c)(3) status of three (3) years or less.
o If 501(c)(3) status has not yet been attained, please provide proof of acting in alignment with the IRS definition of a
nonprofit: possessing a nonprofit established mission, an advisory committee or a board of directors, and a history of
activities directly related to the purpose of eligibility to attain nonprofit status.
o Additionally, emerging arts organizations aspiring to a nonprofit status must apply through a fiscal agent.
o Fiscal agents will be responsible for receiving awarded funds and dispersing them with a service fee of no more than
10% of the amount awarded to the applicant.
•Projects must take place within Carlsbad, CA city limits and be accessible to the public, and benefit the community of
Carlsbad.
•Projects must be representative of at least one (1) of the following mediums/forms of artistic expression:
o Dance
o Original music composition/lyrics
o Spoken word/poetry
o Visual Arts that utilize sustainable or recycled materials
FISCAL AGENT REQUIREMENTS
o Individuals or organizations in the process of applying for nonprofit status may apply through a fiscal agent.
o Any partnership between an individual, educational institution or organization must include a letter of agreement from
the partnering entities.
o Fiscal agents will be responsible for receiving awarded funds and dispersing them with a service fee of no more than
10% of the amount awarded to the applicant.
o Organizations that act as fiscal agents are still eligible to apply for a Community Arts Grants for their organization.
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND AFFILIATED GROUPS – ARTS IN SCHOOLS
•Arts in Schools requests are only available to nonprofit schools or school-affiliated groups in Carlsbad, CA.
•Arts in Schools are defined as programs, activities, and events that are primarily designed to be arts focused.
•Arts in Schools grants - $3,500 maximum award per grant with a maximum of three (3) grants per school site per year.

PANEL REVIEW AND SCORING OF APPLICATIONS
Submitted applications are reviewed and scored by a virtual peer panel of local and regional artists, arts professionals, and
educators. The panelists’ scoring will inform a funding plan for review and final approval by the Carlsbad Arts Commission.
SCORING RUBRIC FOR ALL CATEGORIES (EXCEPT EMERGING ARTISTS)
Application scores will be based on the following criteria aligned with the Community Arts Grants mission. Panelists will be asked to
undertake the following scoring recommendations and directives:
•Panelists will score applications on how closely the project(s) achieve the goals of the respective grant category.
•Panelists may be asked to convene to discuss the application’s merits.
•Award amounts are determined via a formula that takes into consideration the total amount of available funds, the average
scores of the applicants, and an assigned percentage based on those scores.
The scoring of applications will be based on the following criteria, with a maximum score of 50 points. The examples provided are for
informational purposes only and are not meant to be exhaustive:
•Quality of Program(s) (10 points)
o Reinforce accessible artistic and cultural opportunities and experiences for Carlsbad residents.
o Provide arts education and lifelong learning opportunities for all ages.
•Community Impact (30 points)
o Celebrate and promote Carlsbad as an exciting, vibrant, and creative destination for our community, students, as well
as visitors and tourists throughout the world.
o Support local and regional arts and cultural organizations as an important component of the economy and quality of
life in Carlsbad and North San Diego County.
o Accessibility of program for participants and audience members, including economic limitations under the Americans

•Encouragement of programs that promote the representation and participation of diverse groups of individuals, including

•Organizational Capacity (10 points)
o Provide evidence of organizational strength and capacity to support the scope of the project/activity.
OTHER REVIEW AND SCORING INFORMATION

•Applications deemed eligible will be forwarded to scoring panelists and reviewed within the context of the project or
program as outlined in the application.
•Incomplete applications, or applications with incorrect information, will be deemed ineligible.
AGREEMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR GRANTEES
Upon approval of your application:
•Legal Agreement with the City of Carlsbad: To proceed with your project, you must first enter into a legal agreement with
the City of Carlsbad. City will route the agreement using DocuSign to obtain secure electronic signatures, and the
commencement of your project is contingent upon the execution of this agreement.
•Non-Profit Corporation Signing Authorities: All agreements MUST be signed by two officers listed on the Statement of
Information filed with the California Secretary of State for your organization (or as listed on the most recent board roster).
These officers should be those who are authorized to enter into legally binding agreements on behalf of your organization,
such as CEO, CFO, Treasurer, Secretary.
One corporate officer from each of the following groups must sign the agreement:

Specific Entity Requirements:

representative (e.g., Assistant Superintendent).
o School-Affiliated Groups (i.e., school booster groups): Follow the same signature requirements as nonprofit
organizations.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Applicants who have been granted funding in previous cycles must meet all requirements from those past
agreements before they are eligible to receive a new agreement for the FY 2026-27 cycle.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Grant recipients are required to maintain three (3) years of accounts, records and evidence pertaining to costs incurred and
revenues acquired under the respective grant program. Grantees should be able to provide upon request:
•Accurate, current and complete disclosure of revenue and expenses for the project.
•Records that adequately identify the sources and application of funds for grant sponsored activities.
•Accounting records supported by source documentation – invoices, receipts, bank statements, etc.

PUBLIC ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
•Grant recipients must acknowledge the Cultural Arts Office for its support of the project in printed, electronic and/or
broadcast promotions.
•The following acknowledgment along with a City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts logo must appear on all printed and electronic
materials: “This program is funded in part by the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office.” This logo and guidelines for
acknowledgment are available on the Community Arts Grants webpage or upon request.
•Grantees who fail to provide public acknowledgment may be denied future project funding.
PROMOTION BY CITY
•Grantees are required to keep the Cultural Arts Office informed of all program dates and times.
•If the grantee wishes to participate in promotion through approved city channels, they may opt-in as part of the agreement.
All participation in promotion through the city’s social media channels and other outlets, is subject to staff review, editing
and approval prior to promotion.
•Grantees are encouraged and expected to:
o Give notifications and invitations to the Cultural Arts Office staff that will be extended to the Carlsbad Arts Commission
at least two (2) weeks in advance of program.
o Extensively promote funded events and projects with appropriate verbiage as indicated in “Public Acknowledgement”
stipulated above.
FINAL REPORTS, SITE VISITS AND PROGRAM ATTENDANCE
The Cultural Arts staff may monitor grant projects during the grant cycle, including potential site visits. The reports of these visits will
be included in grant application files and may provide a basis for evaluation of future requests.
Grantees will have an option to replace digitally submitted final reports with in-person site visits and/or interviews. Pending any
health and safety mandates and protocols as outlined by state, county, local or other governmental bodies, these site visits/
interviews may be conducted by Cultural Arts staff and/or Arts Commissioner(s), as available, and appropriate to each grant.
Grantees may still opt to submit on-line final reports in consultation with staff. In all cases, grantees will still be required to submit
final budget forms digitally for staff review and approval.
All final reports are due within thirty (30) days of the completion of the event or Friday, Oct. 1, 2027, whichever comes first, to
receive the final award payment. Excessively late submission of a final report may result in action taken per contract.

POLICIES
•Once submitted, applications may be moved into a different category at the discretion of Cultural Arts staff. Notification will
be made to the applicant.
•The City of Carlsbad reserves the right to limit funding amounts to any applicant, regardless of eligibility or panel score,
based on fiscal year limitations.
•Cultural Arts Office staff actively review and evaluate all aspects of the funding program and process. Updates may occur
throughout the funding calendar. Cultural Arts staff will provide information on program updates, to all grantees when they
are implemented.
•Any significant changes or amendments by the grantee to approved projects must be submitted in writing to the Cultural
Arts Office by the grantee before any grant funds are used, and before the execution of any altered activity. This includes,
but is not limited to, changes in purpose, scope, services, target audiences, intended timeline, personnel, location, date,
activities, or budget. This requirement will be included in the agreement.
•The Cultural Arts Office reserves the right to review, cancel or reallocate project funds significantly altered or shifted from
stated goals in the original approved application and/or revised project form. Canceled funds must be returned to the
Cultural Arts Office within thirty (30) days of written notification.
•No two (2) entities (organization or school/affiliated groups) may apply for funding for the same project.
•Applicants may only apply to one (1) category per funding cycle.

Carlsbad Arts Commission meetings are public, and information is available on the city website. A meeting is scheduled for
Thursday, May 7, 2026, to approve the FY 2026-27 Community Arts Grants Funding Plan. For more information about the duties of

HOW TO APPLY
Application
All applications must be submitted online. The application is comprised of approximately five (5) main sections, some of which
include long answer sections and attachments. The application is available at the Community Arts Grants webpage.

APPENDIX 1: COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS FAQ’S
Are there any organizations that are ineligible to receive Community Arts Grant funding?
Yes. For-profit organizations are ineligible to receive funding through the Community Arts Grants program. This includes for-profit
schools and businesses.
Can I apply to more than one category?
No. Unlike previous grant cycles, artists and organizations may only apply to one (1) category per fiscal year grant cycle.
What projects are eligible for the Emerging Arts Organization category?
Projects must be representative of at least one (1) of the following mediums/forms of artistic expression:
o Dance
o Original music composition/lyrics
o Spoken word/poetry
o Visual Arts using sustainable or recycled materials
o Ethnic or indigenous art forms
o Digital art forms such as film, animation, etc.
What arts organizations qualify to apply in the Emerging Arts Organization category?
•Arts Organization must be based in Carlsbad, CA.
•Must have a nonprofit 501(c)(3) status of three (3) years or less:
•If 501(c)(3) status has not yet been attained, please provide proof of acting in alignment with the IRS definition of a
nonprofit; possessing a nonprofit established mission, an advisory committee or a board of directors, and a history of
activities directly related to the purpose of eligibility to attain a nonprofit status.
•Additionally, emerging arts organizations aspiring to a nonprofit status must apply through a fiscal agent.
Is attendance required for the workshops and information sessions?
Applicant workshop attendance or technical assistance meeting is required for all new applicants, applicants who were denied the
last cycle, and those applying in the Emerging Arts Organization category. Workshop attendance or technical assistance meetings by
returning awardees are highly recommended as an opportunity for staff to guide and assist applicants in the FY 2026-27 Community
Arts Grants application process.
How are final awards decided?
All award amount decisions consider the total amount of funding available, scores from panelists, and the request from the applying
entity. After panelists score, Cultural Arts staff will create a funding plan based on these factors, which is forwarded to the Arts Commission for final approval.

The City of Carlsbad will NOT award Community Arts Grants to:
•For-profit organizations, schools, and businesses.
•Organizations and/or affiliates that are directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on
behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.
•Governmental agencies or public authorities.
•Applicants that have a “delinquent” status with the Community Arts Grants funding programs.
•Retroactive funding for completed activities.
•Religious and/or sectarian programming or any programming and/or services solely for the promotion of or consumption by
a specific religious order and/or sect.
•Cash reserves or endowments of any kind. Awards are to be expended within the designated funding period.
•Capital expenditures, including construction, renovation, or purchase of real property.
•Applications that do not support nonprofit, public art activities or projects that benefit a for-profit business or activity.
•Projects through a fiscal sponsor that benefit the sponsoring organization or are an extension of the sponsoring
organization’s programs or services.
•Support groups and/or nonprofit organizations supporting city departments or facilities.
•General operating costs, including costs associated with the start-up of a new organization.
•Applications to reduce existing deficits.
•Applicants currently receiving funding from the City of Carlsbad under an active professional services agreement or grant
other than a Community Arts Grant.
Funding may NOT be used for:
•Fundraising expenses.
•Consultants who are members of an applicant’s staff or board.
•Political campaigns or lobbying activities.
•Payments to students.
•Endowments or endowment campaigns.
•Scholarships, fellowships or tuition assistance.
•Costs incurred before the start of the funded project or outside the funding period.
•Project or activities outside the City of Carlsbad limits.
•Entry fees for competitions or sponsorship fees.
•Pageants, fund-raising events, or hospitality costs.
•Private foundations or other re-granting organizations.
•Religious or doctrinal purposes, although faith-based organizations may apply for program support.
•Publication of manuscripts or compositions not created as part of a grant-supported project.
•Purchase of monetary awards, cash prizes, contributions, or donations.
•Professional development for staff and board members.
•Scholarly or academic research, tuition and activities which generate academic credit or formal study toward an academic
or professional degree.

•Ongoing, recurring administrative expenses.

NVA will produce AS YOU LIKE IT: THE MUSICAL as the centerpiece for our 25th Anniversary season, with all
related events taking place at our home in Carlsbad Village. Rehearsals will begin in mid-September 2026.
Preview performances will take place October 16–23, with the official run scheduled from October 24
through November 29, totaling 31 performances.
This production will be directed by Founder Kristianne Kurner and utilize 33 artists and 4 technicians, and at
least six students will participate as actors through a partnership with the Actors Academy at MiraCosta
College. These students will receive hands-on theatre experience, a launching pad for their artistic careers,
mentorship from working arts professionals, and practical exposure to industry standards in a safe learning
environment.
Participants will develop skills in classical text interpretation, musical performance, ensemble collaboration,
rehearsal discipline, and insight into artistic professional pathways.

Founded in 2001, NVA now has over 25 years of experience producing professional, multi-disciplinary arts
programming and welcomes over 30,000 patrons annually to experience theatre, music, and arts events in
the heart of Carlsbad Village. Over the course of NVA’s history, we have produced over 120 fully realized
theatre productions, each running 3–6 weeks, with a full staff of professional actors, designers, technicians, as
well as community partners.
As the only professional theatre company in Carlsbad, NVA takes great pride in our ability and proven track
record to produce high-quality, innovative theatrical works that engage and attract diverse audiences and
award-winning artists. Past musical productions have consistently sold well, received critical acclaim, and
provided career-changing opportunities for artists.
NVA’s success in running robust education and professional training programs, also make us uniquely suited
to bring this project to life. For years, NVA has provided a vital training ground in North County San Diego for
burgeoning theater professionals, and has served as a bridge to further training and employment in the arts.
This includes programs such as The Mainstage Players: a professional training program for teens and young
adults with neurodiversity, and the Dea Hurston Fellowship: a professional arts pipeline created to address
the lack of paid opportunities for women, BIPOC, and other underrepresented theatre artists and students in
San Diego.
Project Distinction:
What makes this project distinctive?
This San Diego premiere of AS YOU LIKE IT: THE MUSICAL, will provide a rare opportunity for audiences to
see a classic and beloved text, transformed into something wholly new. This musical was adapted and
composed by Tony Award-winning composer and writer Shaina Taub, who made history in 2024 as the first
woman to win both Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical in the same season for SUFFS. It blends
timeless themes of identity, love, and transformation with a modern folk-pop score.

Presenting this work as part of NVA’s 25th Anniversary season underscores our commitment to innovative
storytelling, bringing new and significant works to North County audiences, and inspiring new artists and art-
lovers to come together and enjoy the transformative power of the arts.
As the only professional theatre company in Carlsbad, this project is also distinctive in its’ support of
Carlsbad’s artistic landscape. For the last 25 years, NVA has served as a launching pad for the careers of
countless artists, has helped generations of students experience the joy of live performance, and helped
individuals realize professional artistic pathways available to them. This project will provide 37 paid
opportunities to local artists and technicians and employ a full front of house staff. NVA’s consistent
investment in local arts infrastructure and communities ensures that Carlsbad’s creative economy will
continue to have new artists and audiences for 25 more years, and beyond.

At NVA, our goal is to bring artistic excellence to everything that we do and provide arts experiences that
awaken the human spirit to all who witness our work. In this production of AS YOU LIKE IT we seek to:
- produce a high-quality theatrical production that engages and entertains diverse audiences
- introduce local audiences to a contemporary adaptation of a beloved Shakespearean comedy
- provide meaningful professional development opportunities for emerging theatre students at MiraCosta
College
- strengthen community engagement through accessible and compelling contemporary programming

The Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center is dedicated to providing a welcoming space to all who step inside
our doors. We proudly invite both our local community and visiting tourists to engage with our diverse
programming and welcome 30,000+ visitors annually, across all programming.
Our target population includes North County San Diego residents, theatre and art-lovers, students, families,
and audiences historically excluded in the American theatre landscape. NVA prioritizes providing a
welcoming space for people of all backgrounds to enjoy professional arts and culture experiences.
Outreach efforts include targeted marketing campaigns, partnerships with local schools and colleges,
community engagement initiatives, artist talkbacks, discounted ticket programs, and access resources. Our
collaboration with MiraCosta College will also directly engage students and their networks, expanding our
reach to new audiences.
While our general theatre audiences currently tend to be 50+, we are always looking to engage younger
audiences. These efforts include our robust partnerships with schools across San Diego County, and by
presenting this contemporary, music-forward adaptation of a Shakespearean classic.

NVA will partner with the Actors Academy at MiraCosta College to provide professional training
opportunities for emerging performers. At least six students will participate in the production, working
alongside professional artists in rehearsals and performances.
The Actors Academy is a rigorous, audition-based summer training program focused on developing acting
skills through coursework in voice and diction, movement techniques, text analysis, and both Shakespearean
and contemporary performance. This partnership will allow students to apply their training in a professional
setting, bridging the gap between education and industry practice.

What special circumstances, challenges or changes have affected your organization? What impact has this had on
your organization?
Like many arts organizations, NVA has experienced significant financial pressures in recent years. Changes in
government funding sources have created uncertainty and have greatly reduced our annual funding. This has
been a particularly difficult loss for NVA, as we continue to navigate the financial impact of our recent facility
renovation. The loss of this federal funding has also put an additional financial strain on many private
foundations we receive support from, further adding to the impact this has had on our organization.

Additionally, rising operational costs due to new state regulations and broader economic conditions have
increased the overall expense of producing high-quality theatrical work and providing livable wages for staff
and artists. Despite these challenges, NVA remains committed to maintaining our standard of artistic
excellence and community accessibility, and pays every artist who works with us, adding to the positive
economic impact in our community. This makes grant support critical to sustaining our programs and
ensuring our longevity as North County San Diego’s premiere cultural hub.

Responsible for creating and guiding the artistic vision for the Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center, an
award-winning non-profit arts and education company. Produced 24 seasons of professional theater
totaling more than 130 productions, directing, designing and/or acting in two to five of these
productions each season. Created and maintained the financial and strategic plans, the annual budget,
company policies and procedures, and the mission and vision for the organization. Led a $4 million
renovation of the facility and all fundraising and grant writing. Grew the company from a small start-up
to a budget of over $1.6 million with nine full-time employees, a dedicated Board of Directors, and a
fantastic reputation in the community.

The Mainstage Players
NVA created a life-changing program called The Mainstage Players, which is a professional theatre and
arts training program for teens and young adults with neurodiversity, mostly participants with autism,
Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. Throughout the year, NVA offers a variety of classes and
performance experiences that build community, confidence and create an incredible sense of FUN.
The Dea Hurston Fellowship
The Dea Hurston Fellowship (DHF) creates opportunities in the arts for underserved members of our
community, creating the next generation of art makers and art administrators. The DHF has been
serving San Diego for over 10 years and recently made NVA the administrative hub. Currently, NVA is
working with three professional Fellows and three college-aged Fellows.
Theatre Front to Back
NVA has made quite an impact in our local elementary, middle and high schools with Theatre Front to
Back. This program brings professional teaching artists into schools to work with students
and show them the myriad ways they can be involved in the arts. Students learn about all aspects of the
theatre, from acting to design and from stage management to marketing. Programs are tailored to the
needs of the individual schools and feedback has been extraordinary.
Mindful Theatre
NVA has created thriving programs for local senior citizens to experience the arts. The Mindful Theatre
program finds creative ways to expand minds: through theatre, improvisation, music, and visual
arts. Currently, the Silver Singers are a choir group touring local senior living facilities bringing the joy of
music and camaraderie. We also have a program that brings improvisation classes to those facilities,
improving quality of life and bringing much needed laughter and joy.
Teatro Pueblo Nuevo
Recognizing the lack of representation for Latine artists in North County San Diego, TPN was created to
level that playing field. Programs include residencies for artists, scholarship opportunities, free theatre
tickets to community organizations, and plays and other events produced on our stages.
Final Draft New Play Festival
Five years of a new play festival featuring all San Diego-based playwrights. Final Draft matched the best
new plays with the best local craft beer and San Diego Magazine called it one of the “coolest things to
do” in San Diego. Over 25 playwrights were supported and two plays that originated in the festival ended
up in the professional theatrical season at NVA.

On New Year’s Day, 2001, I was walking with my family along the sea wall in Carlsbad
and was surprised to run into Nikolai and Mimi Tsankov, friends from graduate school
in New York in the mid 1990s. We had a nice catch-up and then started talking about
how much I was dreaming of starting a professional theatre company in Carlsbad, a
town that I had never lived in myself, but my family had since the 1950s and joyful
holidays took place here. Nikolai was an actor (most recently in Kathryn Bigelow’s A
House of Dynamite on Netflix) and Mimi an attorney and they instantly offered their
help. Mimi would go on to do our non-profit corporation paperwork for us pro bono
and in April of 2001 New Village Arts was officially launched.
In September of 2001, just a few weeks after 9/11, New Village Arts had its first
public performance: an evening of new playreadings by graduates of the Actors
Studio Drama School cheekily called Four Play at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center.
Interspersed with the playreadings were actors reading emails from friends who were
in NYC on 9/11. The actors included our founders (me and Francis Gercke), founder of
Carlsbad Playreaders Pat Hansen, Stacey Martino, Scott Beehner, Chris Conner, and a
special appearance by Tony-winner Julie White. It was an evening focused on bringing
the community together after a most tragic event.
The first full theatrical production of New Village Arts was Cindy Lou Johnson’s
Brilliant Traces, which was performed in a converted chicken coop. Really. The
Granary is an historical building in Carlsbad’s Magee Park and the 25 audience
members were invited into the space with a blanket on each chair and went on a
wild ride as if they were in a cabin in Alaska in the middle of a massive snowstorm.
The production was hailed by critics and NVA was named the “most exciting new
theatre company” in San Diego.
After that performance, we didn’t know where we were going to end up and were
fortunate to be introduced to the people who run Jazzercise. NVA spent the next five
years creating plays in the studio space in the corporate headquarters of the dance
fitness company. Those five years allowed NVA to build its reputation with patrons,
critics, and the City of Carlsbad. We also had the incredible women who run Jazzercise
as our mentors, specifically Judi Sheppard Missett and Sally Baldridge, with Jack
Missett being an inaugural member of our first acting company. NVA became known
for edgy works by authors like Sam Shepard and creative reimaginings of classics by
Chekhov and Shakespeare (during this time we also did a FREE Shakespeare in the Park
in local Carlsbad parks every summer!)
We continued dreaming of having our own space to grow and be able to do shows
on a more consistent basis. Everytime I walked by the old Bauer Lumber Company
building at 2787 State Street in Carlsbad Village I would say, “that space should be a
theater!” The building was owned by the City of Carlsbad and I applied to use it as a
theater three times. The third time was the charm and in 2006 the City Council voted to
allow NVA to fill the space with theater. We renovated the space thanks to leading gifts
from Jack and Valerie Cumming and the PC Chao Foundation and officially opened

and we rushed across the street to Fiesta

outside of London and Broadway of Jezz
Butterworth’s epic play The Ferryman.

a major renovation as the Dea Hurston
New Village Arts Center, named in honor
of the woman with the most profound
impact on the theatre community

New Village Arts was founded on the idea that art is for everyone. Today we are
a living village of artists, audiences, donors, volunteers, and staff who believe that
adventurous art matters. We make theatre in relationship with the people around us,
and we measure our success not only by what happens onstage, but by what happens
between people when they are here together.
In our village, artists are not visitors. They are neighbors. We support them to
take creative risks, to stretch toward excellence, and to tell stories that feel alive and
important in this moment. Our audiences are not passive observers. They are part of
the event. Every laugh, every held breath, every standing ovation is a reminder that
theatre is something we create together in real time. The work is adventurous because
it asks us to be present with each other, and because it trusts that a shared story can
open us up to empathy, wonder, and honest conversation.
Our home, the Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center, is built for that kind of
closeness. It is a space where you are never far from the story or from the people sharing
it with you. Having two stages under one roof allows our village to stay active year-
round, welcoming new voices and new audiences into our Village. The building holds
performances, yes, but it also holds first meetings, reunions, difficult talks, celebratory
nights out, and the quiet kind of healing that happens when someone feels seen by a
story. This is what it means to be a village. We gather. We return. We belong.
People do return, in beautiful and varied ways. Each year tens of thousands of
patrons walk through our doors. Some have been with us for decades and know our
rhythms by heart. Others are discovering live theatre for the first time. In our Village, both
matter equally. We love the longtime supporters who help sustain our work. We love
the newcomers who bring fresh energy and curiosity. We love the families who make
theatre part of their traditions, and the solo patrons who come in needing a night that
feels meaningful. Their presence keeps Carlsbad Village vibrant, not only economically,
but emotionally. Our community grows stronger when it has a place where people
regularly gather for shared experience, and we are proud to be that place.
Our village is guided by art for all and our commitment to that ensures everyone
can enter our Village and feel genuinely welcome, whether they are onstage,
backstage, or in the seats. Inclusive art is a responsibility that we don’t accept lightly.
Equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racist practice shape how we choose stories, how
we build teams, and how we care for our community. Adventurous art matters most
when it reflects the full richness of the world we live in and when access to it is real,
not theoretical.
That is who New Village Arts is right now. We are a living village that gathers for

The renaming of the Ray Charles Stage at New
Village Arts has become one of the most meaningful
milestones in our company’s history. Ray Charles’ legacy
is defined by brilliance born from perseverance, an
artist who transformed American music through
innovation, discipline, and an unwavering belief in
the power of art to connect people. His life reminds
us that greatness doesn’t come from abundance; it
comes from intention, authenticity, and the courage
to create with what you have. At NVA, we see that
reflection every day. We are a small but mighty
organization, not scrappy, but deeply intentional.
With limited resources, we choose purpose over
excess, craft over convenience, and community
over ego. Our values echo Ray’s own journey:

Sahm Foundation Arts Education Center
Did you know that NVA started as a professional
theatre and acting school? The first productions
of the organization were funded by proceeds from
our acting classes. Since those early days, NVA has
gone on to have a thriving education program with
groundbreaking programs for teens and young
adults with neurodiversity and other special needs,
and senior citizens, including those struggling with
Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Mainstage Players
The Mainstage Players is a professional training program for teens and young adults with
neurodiversity that has been transforming lives at New Village Arts for over 10 years. 13.9% of U.S.
adults have a cognitive disability, yet most of their artistic experiences are limited to therapeutic
programs rather than professional careers, leaving a major gap in opportunity and representation.
NVA bridges that gap by providing professional training, performance experience, and inclusion in our
subscription shows on the Ray Charles Stage, as well as Improv Sketch classes like “Monday Night Live!”
Programs like these not only teach skills but also empower these artists to shine in the community.
MAINSTAGE PLAYERS TESTIMONIAL

Ten minutes to places.
A small audience gathers. Families and friends exchange smiles and hellos.
Five minutes to places.
Six young adults sit off stage, waiting for their cues. Lines have been memorized, scenes
blocked, character motivations analyzed.
The stage is set in the lobby of New Village Arts. The director finalizes last minute details. The actors prepare to do what they have trained eight weeks to do, perform. To them, there is nothing unusual about this event. They have worked hard and a live audience is their reward.
Lights Up.
Autism. Down’s Syndrome. Disabled. Special Needs. That is what most audiences would see in the actors waiting to take turns on stage. Labels. Shorthand for histories that take too long to explain, and require too much patience to listen to. My son is one of those actors. I’m here to support him, his friends, and the program that allows them the opportunity to do something they enjoy...being part of a story, being on stage, being seen for something other than a label. In this environment, they are actors. Plain and simple.
The first actor recites his monologue. The next actor begins. As I watch the performance unfold, I’m pulled into the experience. They are so in the moment, so sincere, so unapologetically themselves that I dare not look away. Their words are not the point. Their presence is what matters. It proclaims, “I’m here. I’m part of this world. I matter. Just as I am.”
My son performs halfway through the show. I marvel at how he can stand on stage without fear, how he can recite all those words without effort. He is giving it his all to express emotions on stage that do not come naturally to him off stage. I see the same level of dedication and effort in each actor, every performance.
Curtain Call.
The troupe takes a collective bow and receives their well-deserved applause. Today, they have claimed their rightful place in the spotlight. No labels. No disclaimers. They are unafraid to get up on a stage and be exactly who they are. How many among us can say the same? After today’s performance, alternative labels come to mind.
Creative, Courageous, Resilient, Free. I have much I can learn from them.
The Mindful Theatre
The Mindful Theatre program at New Village Arts creates fun and meaningful artistic experiences with local senior
citizens. There are currently two programs running: The Silver Singers, a choir led by Beatrice Mojtahed (Crosbie) that
rehearses weekly in the NVA lobby and then tours local senior living communities twice a year; and Mindful Theatre,
an improvisation class for seniors living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Founder Kristianne Kurner was inspired to
start the class when her own father was facing Alzheimer’s and his neuropsychologist shared that improvisation was
one of the best ways to improve quality of life and bring joy in what can be a most challenging time.

Silver Singers

“IT WAS THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME THAT I FELT LIKE ME!”
The Silver Singers had just provided a musical experience for the residents of a senior living
facility and, as always happens, a woman had come up to me to express her gratitude.
The Singers’ group members are all over 55 ourselves. The New Village Arts sponsored
program has given participants the opportunity to be ourselves and contribute in ways that
have gone beyond our expectations. Silver Singers offers us an opportunity to sing as part of a
group and to give back to others by providing music and cheer to senior residences throughout
San Diego’s North County. During the performance, and after a few songs by the group alone,
residents are invited to sing along—which they do with gusto! Afterwards, group members
mingle with the audiences, who often share amazing life stories and happy memories. I find
it especially rewarding when we sing in the memory care area, which often doesn’t get to
participate in special events. Watching initially blank faces light up with joy and recognition as
we sing familiar songs from the past touches my heart!
Conductor Bea Crosbie Mojtahed creates a lovely warm and positive environment, and I am
truly grateful to New Village Arts for providing such a fulfilling opportunity!
Improv Hub of North County
NVA is quickly becoming the Improv Hub of North County, thanks in large part to the
growing success of our weekly Improv Drop-In Class with Patrick McInnis. Every week,
improvisers of all experience levels step into a supportive, joy-filled space to discover
the fundamentals of improvisation: spontaneity, active listening, collaboration, and
play. Patrick’s signature Fundamentals of Improv Series (Levels I–V) has also become a
cornerstone of our education programming, offering a clear pathway for students to
deepen their craft while building confidence both on and off stage. With each session,
our Village grows…new faces, new skills, new stories, and an ever-expanding ensemble of
artists committed to saying “yes, and” to creativity.
Virtual Film Club

CELEBRATING 5 YEARS!
The film club was founded in 2020 as a heartfelt response to the isolation of the COVID-19
shutdown. Also deeply affected by the murder of George Floyd, and the social issues it exposed,
the club focuses on films many members may not have seen. A wide variety of Black classics,
dramas, comedies, documentaries, and stories exploring Black history, civil rights, and the broad
contributions of Americans of African heritage in fields such as science, education, physics, law,
agriculture and film, are individually viewed by members and discussed together via Zoom.
Members watch each film with the intention of sharing what resonated with them:
emotional moments, new insights, and personal or family connections. The discussions are
lively and inclusive, with participants offering background on the actors, related films, historic
events, and thoughtful opinions in a respectful, open dialogue. Club members come from all
walks of life, and several original members remain part of the group today.

Improv Comedy Show
In January 2024, Patrick McInnis began teaching improv at New Village Arts, drawn
to the theater’s commitment to celebrating diverse voices and its strong sense of
community. As a Carlsbad realtor who has been teaching improv for nearly 15 years, he
was especially grateful for the overwhelming support from NVA patrons—people willing
to try something new, step into the unknown, and laugh together. Since March of ’24,
he’s produced monthly Improv Comedy Shows, welcomed over 200 students into weekly
drop-ins and leveled classes, and partnered with Jefferson Elementary to bring improv to
young performers. Patrick’s Improv Comedy Show troupe has collaborated with theaters
across San Diego, sold out multiple shows, and created quarterly welcoming community
performances that offer meaningful stage time to anyone eager to grow. While improv in
North County isn’t new, the energy at New Village Arts has sparked one of the most vibrant,
unified, and supportive improv communities in the region. If you’re curious what that feels

Dad Skeleton’s Comedy Variety Hour
Dad Skeleton Comedy began producing shows at New Village Arts in early 2024 and
has gained a dedicated and eccentric North County following, all thanks to the Next
Stage. Dad Skeleton specializes in sketch and character comedy that rivals Saturday Night
Live. They were named one of San Diego Fringe Festival’s Top 15 Shows to See 2024, were
nominated for Best Writing in the San Diego 48 Hour Film Festival, and are so proud to
call NVA their North County home! Their NVA show, Dad Skeleton’s Comedy Variety Hour,
helmed by Paige Chadwick and Jacob Rozansky, is a claw machine of transgressive talent
that brings together the best performers San Diego has to offer in a whirlwind of comedy,
music, and good taste. NVA has been a wonderful partner due to their pristine facilities,
excellent staff, and prominent standing in Carlsbad as a one-of-a-kind performance venue
for independent artists. We hope that these revues bring opportunities to emerging artists
as well as one-of-a-kind offerings to North County.

Opera À la Carte San Diego is a women-run organization dedicated to making opera accessible, affordable,
and deeply connected to the San Diego community. Their mission is to showcase exceptional local talent,
create new opera lovers, and bring meaningful storytelling to audiences of all backgrounds. New Village Arts
has been their creative home for 2½ years, offering the intimate, welcoming space where artists and audiences
truly connect. Opera À la Carte’s monthly programming at NVA features a rich blend of opera, musical theatre,
and classical art song, allowing performers to shine across genres while giving audiences a broader, more
inviting experience. This variety helps newcomers discover what they love and keeps longtime patrons
engaged with fresh, dynamic concerts. This year, they celebrated major milestones: producing their second
full opera, Orpheus in the Underworld, to critical acclaim; performing at Bella Vita Fest in Little Italy; sharing
music in donation-based concerts at libraries across San Diego County, including Encinitas and 4S Ranch;
and continuing to grow one of NVA’s favorite recurring series.
Cozmic Comedy Stand-Up Showcase!

Cozmic Comedy is more than a stand-up show: it’s a celebration of laughter. This comedy show
was created to spotlight diverse voices and real stories from comedians who turn life’s challenges into
humor. This show believes in inclusion through expression. By laughing together, we dissolve barriers
and create community! We all have our troubles, but when we share them through comedy, we
create out-of-this-world laughter. The show is co-produced by Mz. Reka, a proud Indigenous Moorish
American. She tactfully weaves together her thoughts, observations, and life experiences, creating
her own unique comedic style. She has a passion for comedy and reveals that it is the best thing that
she has done for herself in a mighty long time! Co-producer Zuleika Moreno is a first-generation
Afro-Latina American raised in a military family, giving her a global perspective shaped by travel
throughout her youth and professional career. Her comedy reflects the humor and heart found in
cultural fusion, resilience, and discovery. The host, Miles Otaway, is an Englishman whose sharp wit
delivers jokes with charisma, charm, and a touch of cheek.

"Finding a theatre that values inclusivity and community is of the utmost importance to me, and NVA is exactly that. From the moment I set foot into this beautiful theatre, even just as a patron, I was embraced by a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made me feel right at home. Fellowships, Apprenticeships, and Internships
ABOUT DEA HURSTON
New Village Arts had the profound honor of working
alongside the late Dea Hurston, a visionary arts leader who
passed away on July 7, 2024. For over 30 years, Dea was a
driving force in San Diego’s arts ecology as an underwriter,
arts commissioner, and community advocate.
As a young girl, Dea was denied access to music lessons
and artistic opportunities due to the racist attitudes and
laws of her time. She transformed those early barriers into a
lifelong mission: to open doors for others. Dea championed
opportunities for women and artists of color, such as actors,
directors, designers, and playwrights, and she left an indelible
mark on the region’s arts landscape.
In January 2023, we proudly dedicated our building as
the Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center, marking it as the
first arts center in the United States outside of New York to
be named in honor of a Black woman. Dea’s legacy also lives
on through the Dea Hurston Fellowship, which provides paid
training, mentorship, and professional artistic opportunities
for women, BIPOC, and other underrepresented theatre
artists and students in San Diego.
Dea’s impact endures every day, in this building, in our
programs, and in the countless lives she touched.
The Dea Hurston Fellowship (DHF) Addresses Three Main Categories:
•PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS AND ADMINISTRATORS
The professional artist and administrator program
supports the hiring of BIPOC artists in professional
theatres in San Diego County.
•COLLEGE STUDENTS
The college program focuses on creating professional
opportunities for BIPOC, women, and other
underrepresented theatre artists currently in college.
DHF covers stipends for these emerging artists
to work in local professional theatres and gain
mentorship from them.
•HIGH SCHOOL
The high school program focuses on accessibility to the
arts for students in high school. The DHF provides free
tickets to shows, education from industry professionals,
and mentorship opportunities. The DHF will give priority
to students from lower income/higher diversity schools.

The Phifer-Collins Stage Management Fellowship provides hands-on
production experience for early-career theatre professionals pursuing a
career in stage management. Through this fellowship, we aim to support the

NVA COLLEGE ACTING APPRENTICESHIP
The NVA College Acting Apprenticeship is a production-centered training
program crafted for emerging college-level performers. Apprentices step
directly into New Village Arts’ professional season, earning academic credit
while sharing the stage with seasoned theatre-makers. With opportunities
across leading, supporting, and ensemble roles, this program offers invaluable
real-world experience that sharpens skills, elevates résumés, and forges lasting

their commitment to community, and/or their investment
in NVA or the Carlsbad Village area. Changemakers will be
announced at a special patron event early in the year. At its
core, New Village Arts is about two things, artistic excellence
and building community. The 25th Anniversary year will
celebrate those ideals and highlight the performances and
people who make it all possible.

A WALK WITH YAAMAY

New Village Arts will be partnering with Yáamay: An
Anthology of Feminine Perspectives Across Indigenous
California artists Camaray Davalos, Avelaka Macarro, and
Rebecca Macarro to create a series of guided "art walks" in
California State Parks and other local outdoor spaces. This
project blends natural exploration with excerpts from the
anthology — a collection of Indigenous poetry, artwork, and
essays specific to what is now known as Southern California.
These immersive walks will be led by poets, singers, and actors
who will guide participants along curated trails, pausing at
intentional stops for "moments of art."
FEELIN’ GOOD PROGRAM

Feelin’ Good is a pilot prescriptive arts program designed
to offer healing through arts and nature. Feelin’ Good will
focus on supporting individuals navigating mental health
challenges, substance use disorders, and the distinct stresses
experienced by veterans, active-duty military personnel, and
women in recovery. Through a creative, holistic approach,
Feelin’ Good will offer clinicians and patients an innovative
alternative or complement to traditional therapy and
medication. Support from the LB Charitable Foundation
will make it possible to pilot this incredible prescriptive arts
and nature program. Together, we can create a happier and
healthier North County, all while laying the groundwork for
future expansion across all of San Diego County.
