Sirs :
I wa8 born in 1904 and first drove a car at the age of 14. Since
that time I have put in many thoueands of miles.
I have owned many "different" vehicles, some which could be
classified as Hot Rods. At present I own a Mercedes Benz 300 SL.
I have been in the Air Force for 33 years and have been a close
observer of cars and people who drive them.
I have watched the eo-called "Hot Rod" movement grow in the
United States. I state without hesitation that this movement has been
of nationwide benefit and is only condemned by those who are ignorant
of its true objectives.
The organized drag strips and car clubs haw, channeled the young
American's energies in the proper direction and have contributed
greatly to highway safety by providing a safe and supervised place
where he can do what he will do, legislation or not. To outlaw this
activity would be a real long step in the wrong direction.
Since rely,
Lieutenant General, U. S. Air Force
Commandant
