Dear Bill Compas:
I am writing to express my concern about the scheduled hearing regarding the
conditional use permit for the Children’s Center at Pilgrim Church. It is my
understanding that, on the complaint of one neighbor, your staff is recommending that
the church be forced to build a concrete wall between the Center and the neighbor’s
property.
The Church and the Children’s Center have done everything possible to placate the
neighbor, who has proved singularly intractable. I would ask you to consider what
might happen should the wall be built, and the neighbor is still unsatisfied. Will the
Center then be forced to build a higher wall? Cease operation?
As a very concerned member of Pilgrim Church, I would suggest that the staff is taking
a singularly punitive approach on this one complaint. I would like to remind you that
our Children’s Center is a unique multi-faith, multi-racial center with an extensive
scholarship program for low-income families. There is no other facility like it in our
area.
I would urge you to reject the recommendation of your staff, and suggest to our un-
cooperative neighbor that he back off, and deal fairly with the Center directly.
