SIGN TYPE 'A' - MONUMENT SIGN
DESIGN AND LOCATION
SIGN TYPE "A" SHALL BE AN ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT IN THE STYLE AND CHARACTER OF THE
CENTER. THIS SIGN SHALL BE DOUBLE SIDED AND DISPLAY THE NAME OF THE CENTER AND THE
ADDRESS(ES) OF THE CENTER AND/OR BUILDINGS. THE SIGN FACES SHALL BE EXTERNALLY
ILLUMINATED METAL PEGGED OFF LETTERS. SEE SIGN ILLUSTRATION FOR SPECIFIC DESIGN AND
LAYOUT. SEE SIGNAGE SITE PLAN FOR PERMITTED LOCATION. THE SIGN SHALL BE LOCATED SO AS
NOT TO INTERFERE WITH THE UNOBSTRUCTED CLEAR VIEW OF THE PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY AND
NEARBY TRAFFIC REGULATORY SIGNS OF ANY PEDESTRIAN, BICYCLIST OR MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVER. THE
SIGN SHALL BE PLACED WITH A LANDSCAPE AREA AROUND THE BASE OF THE SIGN, AT A MINIMUM
RATIO OF TWO SQUARE FEET FOR EVERY ONE SQUARE FOOT OF SIGN AREA. LANDSCAPE FLOOD
LIGHTS SHALL BE PROVIDED TO ILLUMINATE THE SIGN AREA. SUCH LIGHT SOURCES SHALL BE
SCREENED OR HIDDEN AND SHALL BE SHADED, SHIELDED, AND DIRECTED SO AS TO MINIMIZE LIGHT
SPILLAGE ONTO THE PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY OR ADJACENT PROPERTIES.
SIZE AND DIMENSIONS
SIGN TYPE "A" SHALL NOT EXCEED 6 FEET IN HEIGHT INCLUDING ANY ARCHrTECTURAL ORNAMENTATION.
LETTER HEIGHT SHALL NOT EXCEED 8 INCHES. SIGNAGE AREA SHALL NOT EXCEED 50 SQUARE FEET
INCLUDING MONUMENT AND MONUMENT BASE, BUT EXCLUSIVE OF ARCHITECTURAL ORNAMENTATION.
COLOR AND STYLE
METAL PEGGED OFF LETTERS SHALL BE ANTIQUE BRONZE.
GENERAL NOTES / DESIGN STANDARDS
1 IN ADDITION TO CONFORMING WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THE CITY OF CARLSBAD SIGN
ORDINANCE, ALL SIGNAGE WITHIN THE CENTER SHALL CONFORM TO THE GENERAL GUIDELINES
AND RESTRICTIONS OUTLINED IN THE APPROVED SIGN PROGRAM ON FILE WITH THE CITY OF
CARLSBAD PLANNING DEPARTMENT. ALL SIGNS SHALL BE MANUFACTURED, ASSEMBLED AND
ERECTED IN COMPLIANCE WITH ALL APPLICABLE STATE, FEDERAL AND CITY REGULATIONS AND
THE LATEST ADOPTED VERSION OF THE BUILDING CODE AND THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE.
2 ALL PERMANENT SIGNS SHALL BE MADE OF DURABLE, CORROSION-RESISTANT MATERIALS.
EVERY SIGN AND ALL PARTS, PORTIONS AND MATERIALS SHALL BE MAINTAINED AND KEPT IN
GOOD REPAIR. THE DISPLAY SURFACE OF ALL SIGNS SHALL BE KEPT CLEAN, NEATLY PAINTED
AND FREE FROM RUST, CRACKING, PEELING, CORROSION OR OTHER STATES OF DISREPAIR.
3. SIGN STRUCTURES, SUPPORTS AND HARDWARE SHALL BE CONCEALED OR INTEGRATED INTO
THE SIGN DESIGN.
4 ILLUMINATION UPON ANY SIGN SHALL BE SHADED, SHIELDED, AND DIRECTED SO AS TO
MINIMIZE LIGHT SPILLAGE ONTO THE PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY OR ADJACENT PROPERTIES.
EXTERNALLY ILLUMINATED SIGNS SHALL BE LIGHTED BY SCREENED OR HIDDEN LIGHT SOURCES.
5 NO SIGN OR SIGN STRUCTURE SHALL BE PLACED OR CONSTRUCTED SO THAT IT IMPAIRS THE
SIGHT DISTANCE REQUIREMENTS AT ANY PUBLIC OR PRIVATE STREET INTERSECTION OR
DRIVEWAY.
6 METAL PEGGED-OFF LETTERS SHALL BE AFFIXED INDIVIDUALLY AND WITHOUT VISIBLE MEANS
OF ATTACHMENT. EXTERNALLY ILLUMINATED SIGNS SHALL NOT HAVE ANY EXPOSED CONDUITS
OR RACEWAYS.
7. FOR SIGNS DISPLAYING COMMERCIAL MESSAGES, FLUORESCENT. "DAY-GLO" AND SIMILAR
COLORS SHALL NOT BE USED.
8. EACH TENANT SHALL BE ALLOWED AND IS REQUIRED TO HAVE A PRIMARY IDENTIFICATION SIGN.
9. THE DESIGN OF ALL SIGNS SHALL REFLECT THE ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTER OF THE CENTER.
12. NO SIGNAGE IS PERMOTED WHICH DOES NOT DIRECTLY RELATE TO THE PRIMARY SERVICE OR
FUNCTION OF THE OCCUPANT'S ACTIVITY. SIGN COPY WILL BE RESTRICTED TO THAT SPECIFIED
IN THE BUSINESS NAME OR SERVICES (NOT INDIVIDUAL PRODUCTS).
13. SIGNS WILL BE FREE OF ALL LABELS AND MANUFACTURER'S ADVERTISING WITH THE EXCEPTION
OF CODE REQUIREMENTS AND SIGN PERMIT DECALS.
14. SUBSTITUTION OF NON-COMMERCAL MESSAGE (21.41.025(2))
SUBJECT TO THE OWNER'S CONSENT, A NONCOMMERCIAL MESSAGE OF ANY TYPE MAY BE
SUBSTrrUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THE COMMERCIAL OR NONCOMMERCIAL MESSAGE ON
ANY SIGN ALLOWED PURSUANT TO THIS CHAPTER (21.41). DESIGN CRITERIA WHICH MAY
APPLY TO COMMERCIAL SIGNS, SUCH AS COLOR, LETTERING STYLE OR HEIGHT, AND
COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER SIGNS ON THE SAME PARCEL OR OTHER SIGNS SUBJECT TO A
SIGN PROGRAM, DO NOT APPLY TO NONCOMMERCIAL MESSAGE SIGNS EVEN WHEN THEY
ARE IN AN AREA SUBJECT TO A SIGN PROGRAM, MASTER PLAN OR SPECIFIC PLAN. NO
SPECIAL OR ADDITIONAL PERMIT IS REQUIRED TO SUBSTfTUTE A NONCOMMERCAL MESSAGE
FOR ANY OTHER MESSAGE ON AN ALLOWABLE SIGN, PROVIDED THE SIGN IS ALREADY
PERMITTED OR EXEMPT FROM THE PERMIT REQUIREMENT. WHEN A NONCOMMERCIAL
MESSAGE IS SUBSTITUTED FOR ANY OTHER MESSAGE, THE SIGN IS STILL SUBJECT TO THE
SAME LOCATION AND STRUCTURE REGULATIONS, SUCH AS SIZE, HEIGHT, ILLUMINATION,
DURATION OF DISPLAY, BUILDING AND ELECTRIAL CODE REQUIREMENTS, AS WOULD APPPLY
IF THE SIGN WERE USED TO DISPLAY A COMMERCIAL MESSAGE OR SOME OTHER
NONCOMMERCIAL MESSAGE. THIS SUBSTITUTION PROVISION SHALL PREVAIL OVER ANY OTHER
