SIGNAGE APPLICATION
Signage Description & Justification Statement
June 27, 2007
This letter is attached as clarification for the request for Signage Approvals and Review for
Sign Permit for the Chevron Service Station located at 2500 El Camino Real in Carlsbad,
California. The proposed remodel prompts this request for approval of a new signage
program.
The site is located at the southeast corner of El Camino Real and Haymar Drive, east of
Interstate 5. The property is owned by Chevron. The property is in the CI - Commercial
zone, and the General Plan designation is L - Local Shopping Center. The project is also
subject to the El Camino Real Development Standards. The surrounding land is all zoned
C1 - Commercial and existing land use is as follows:
North: Buena Vista Creek
South: San Diego National Bank
East: Shopping Center
West: Shopping Mall
The existing non-conforming freeway sign located adjacent to the convenience store will
remain in its current location. The sign face will be replaced as wear and weathering
require.
The existing C-78 pole sign located at the corner of El Camino Real and Haymar will be
replaced with a C-30 monument sign. The C-30 sign will be approximately 6 feet high, with
a face area of approximately 19.4 square feet. The new sign will include the "Extra Mile"
and "Chevron" identity signs and "with Techron" and "Van Houtte".
The existing legal price sign located on Haymar Drive will remain.
The new building will have a 19 square foot externally illuminated "ExtraMile" sign placed
over the entry door. Each of the north and south building elevations will present a 9 square
foot "point of sale" sign.
The canopy signs will be new. The north and south elevations df the canopy will each
contain a 3.1 square foot internally illuminated Chevron hallmark logo. The east and west
elevations will each contain a 15.9 square foot internally illuminated Chevron word mark.
Chevron is confident the appearance of the new signage for the remodeled facility will be
an enhancement to the neighborhood which the station has served for many years.
Chevron would like to schedule construction to begin as soon as possible. Any assistance
the City can provide to meet this schedule will be appreciated.

Chapter 21.41 SIGN ORDINANCE
21.41.130 Nonconforming signs.
Except for normal repair and maintenance and any modification required for NEC compliance, no
nonconforming sign shall be expanded, structurally or electrically altered (not including a change in
sign face or sign copy), moved or relocated, unless it is brought into conformance with all current
provisions of this chapter. When a sign, which was in compliance with all applicable laws in effect at
the time it was originally erected, is physically damaged, whether by vandalism, forces of nature or
other causes, the sign may be repaired or restored to its original size, shape, height, orientation and
message; however, the repair or restoration must be done in a manner which complies with current
building and electrical codes. (Ord. NS-606 § 1 (part), 2001)
