All plans submitted for sign permits/sign programs shall consist of a minimum of a site plan and
sign elevations containing the following information:
1. North arrow and scale.
2. Location of existing buildings or structures, parking areas, and vehicular access points to the
property.
3. Location of all existing and proposed signs for the property.
4. Distance to the property line(s) for all proposed freestanding sign(s).
5. Provide an elevation for all proposed sign(s) which specifies the following:
A. Dimensions and area for all existing and proposed sign(s).
B. Materials the sign(s) will be constructed of.
C. Source of Illumination.
D. Proposed sign copy.
APPLICANT MUST SUBMIT THREE (3) SETS OF SIGN/SITE PLANS, A COMPLETED
APPLICATION FORM, AND THE APPLICATION FEE.

this application showing how the proposed signage will not encroach into the public right-

APPLICATIONS
The following example illustrates the information that is required for all pole, monument, and
freestanding sign permit applications. Prior to approval, all such proposed signs must be reviewed
for potential issues by the Traffic Engineering Department, which will not allow signs to be
approved over the counter. Additional time will be required for on-site inspection.

Relationship to Streets: Signs shall be designed and located so as not to interfere with the
unobstructed clear view of the public right-of-way and nearby traffic regulatory signs of any
pedestrian, bicyclist or motor vehicle driver.

General Notes
1. DEPICTION
The signs and location plans depicted in this document are presented in color schematic form for the purpose of determining size and locations relative to the
architectural designs.
2. CODE REQUIREMENTS
Signage to be in accordance with the requirements of the city's sign ordinance (C.M.C Section 21.41) and the commercial/visitor-serving overlay zone (C.M.C.
Section 21.208.100) as approved pursuant to CUP 07-03. Each tenant shall be required to follow through with the course of action required by the City of
Carlsbad to secure approvals and obtain permits for tenant signage.
3. MATERIALS
Signage materials will coordinate with architectural elements and building materials in accordance with zoning requirements.
4. SIGN NOTES
Refer to design drawings for notes specific to sign fabrication and installation.
5. ENGINEERING
These drawings are for design intent only. Engineering of all signs, sign footings, sign construction, and attachment details will be the responsibility of the
sign contractor. All details shall be shown on the sign contractor's shop drawings and be submitted for approval prior to fabrication. Engineering
calculations must be signed and sealed by a California licensed civil engineer. All items shall be engineered to satisfy applicable codes and regulations.
6. TYPESETTING
All typesetting shall be provided by the contractor. Full size spacing patterns (black infill) shall be submitted to designer prior to fabrication. Fonts used in
this program are compliant with current ADA regulations for letter and numeral width/height ratio and stroke width/height ratio. Sign fabricator shall
maintain the same ADA requirements when producing finished goods. No variation of the appearance of pictographics, numerals and letters shall be
acceptable. Letterspacing depicted in copy layouts is typical.
7. COLORS
Colors in this document are representative only and are not intended for material color matches. Sign contractor to provide faux finish to match sample
shown in these documents. Sign contractor to submit samples as required to SKA Design for approval prior to fabrication.
8. ARTWORK
Digital files of these drawings will be issued to the sign contractor as Mac-based software documents prior to sign fabrication. These electronic files will
include copy sizes, letter and line spacing, positioning of graphic devices, curve shape details, notations and specifications.
8. INSTALLATION
Sign contractor shall develop a schedule for installation of all signs and submit it to the general contractor for approval and coordination.
9. LIGHTING
General contractor shall provide power to illuminated sign locations. Sign contractor to provide all sign related illumination.
10. FABRICATION APPROVAL
Sign contractor to provide detailed shop drawings, material samples and finish samples to SKA Design for approval prior to fabrication

The first number refers to the sign type; i.e., a group of signs similar in size and shape or function.
See sign type menu for overview. Refer to drawings for details.
The second number indicates a specific sign in this group with unique "copy", symbol, or other graphic element.
The lozenge shape is used on location plans to identify a specific item of signing and graphics. This number
appears under the "item number" column in the Graphics Schedule document.
For single-faced signs, the lozenge is connected to the face of the sign on which the message is displayed.
Indication of sign to be shown at approximate location on location plan.

The maximum sign area for tenant wall signs is based on 0.75 sq. ft. for every 1 ft. of lineal commercial tenant/
suite frontage (C.MC. 21.208.100.8.1 ). (For example, 0.75 x 60" = 45 sq. ft max.)
NOTE 2
For the end cap tenant spaces (Tenants 1-H & 1-A), the maximum sign area for each tenant space is 45 sq. ft. (see
Note 1 ). Each of these end cap tenant spaces are permitted to have either one (1) sign or two (2) signs, which are
to be located in the areas shown on the site map below. If either tenant space wishes to utilize the two (2) signs
option, the sum of the two (2) sign areas cannot exceed a total of 45 sq. ft. maximum.
For example, Tenant 1-H could have one (1) sign (up to a maximum of 45 sq. ft. in area) installed on either the
south elevation or on the east elevation in the areas shown on the site map below; or instead Tenant 1-H could
have two (2) signs (the sum of the total sign area cannot exceed 45 sq. ft. maximum) installed on both the south
and the east elevations. However, under no circumstances can two (2) 45 sq. ft. signs per permitted.
