Re: Pea Soup Andersen’s Signage
Dear Mike:
Thank you for meeting with me and discussing the signage issues involving
Pea Soup Andersen’s hotel & restaurant complex.
To summarize what we discussed at that meeting, we would like to
accomplish the following in the very near future:
1. SERVICE STATION
We are planning on bringing in Shell as the dealership for gasoline
products at our service station. Shell would replace our existing
signage at the corner with their own (basically changing the face plates
of the existing sign cans), along with new internally lighted price signs
to replace the wooden signs currently in place, under a separate permit
application to the City. Shell plans some trim painting at the station
facility, however the basic architechural style would not be compromised.
In fact, considerable landscaping changes are planned that would
dress this corner up considerably ailowing for much better eye appeal.
2. DIRECTIONAL SIGN
We would like to propose a directional sign to be placed on top of the
old monument base. The sign would be targeted for directional purposes
only, allowing for customers coming off Interstate 5 some reckoning
of how to get to our main entrance on Paseo del Norte. We would
anticipate that this sign would be subtle and on a scale small enough
that it would be able to be read by the passing motorist seeking the
entrance to our facility.

REMOVAL OF EXISTING SIGNAGE
As we discussed, we have four (4) "Best Western" logo can signs on the
property that consist of approximately 80 square feet. We have no problem
in removing this signage to allow conformity to signage allowances.
allow our conformity to signage allowances.
WALL SIGN
It was our understanding that we had traded one monument advertisement
sign for our now existing freeway sign. Later on, we were requested
to have our wall sign removed in addition to the other monument sign.
As we discussed, due to the heavy plant growth along the 1-5 median,
southbound travellers can not see our freeway sign with the exception
of in the far right lane, and even then it is visible only when you
are virtually on top of the Palomar Airport Road off ramp. Those
driving in the fast lane get glimpses of the wall sign through the
bushes, and drivers in the #2 and #3 lanes can see the wall sign, but
again, not the freeway sign. We would like to compromise and remove
certain portions of this sign (such as the Best Western logo and the
word "Restaurant") to turn this sign into more of an identification
sign than an advertisement, but we feel it is critical that we retain
some portion of this wall sign to allow some form of identification
to southbound traffic.
Mike, as we discussed, our intentions for the property also include
extensive landscaping over the entire property. I referred to the
landscaping at the service station above, however we intend to clear
away much of the brush and growth from the Caltrans side of the on-ramp
adjacent to our property, and adding a considerable number of flowers
and additional plants that would dress up the entire perimeter of the
property, including those areas immediately adjacent to existing signage.
I would like to start the permit process, or a review of our overall
sign plan to accomplish our goals detailed above. As it is our interest
that customers are given the opportunity to see a sign from the freeway,
or be able to find the entrance to our facility, we feel that this
will prove mutually benefitial.
Very truly yours,
PEA SOUP ANDERSEN'S
