SUBJECE PS 9497 - SIGN PER" FOR PATIT'S ON THE BLVD.
The Planning.Department has received and reviewed your proposal to use the existing pole sign structure
at 2939 Carlsbad Boulevard for your identity signage. After researching the previous Sign Permit and
Building Permit files for the entire Town Square complex, staff is unable to support the sign proposal for
the following reasons:
0 No record of a building permit exists for the currently unused pole sign. The adjacent pole
sign did receive a building permit in 1971, at which time the property owner, John Gamer,
understood that only one freestanding sign would be allowed on the premises (see attached
letter, dated May 4, 1971).
a Without legitimizing the second pole sign structure, no signage can be allowed on it,
however, this wouId be difficult to accomplish. The sign appears to overhang public
property, which violates Section 21.41.075(7) of the Sign Ordinance (copy attached), and it
does not meet the spacing criteria for additional freestanding signs [Sections 21.41.075(2)-
(411.
0 The amount of allowed signage area is based upon the total street frontage of the suite or
office. Patti's on the Bhd. has a street frontage of 17 feet, therefore a total of 10.2 square
feet of signage is allowed. The proposed sign measures 28 square feet in area.
The previous tenant of your suite, Ranch & Sea Realty, also requested use of the pole sign structure but
was not allowed because of the reasons above. If the proposed signage measured 10.2 square feet or less,
and would be located in a similar fashion to the Juice Co. at 2959 Carlsbad Boulevard, the Planning
Department could support your sign permit proposal. Another alternative would be to draft a sign program
for the entire Town quare complex that would determine how signage was allocated to the various
businesses. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
