Re: Approval of Sidewalk Sign Permit
Dear Alain:
Thank you for submitting your application for a Sidewalk Sign Permit to replaoe the previously
approved sidewalk sign in front of your business. The modified sign plan meets all the
requirements for a sidewalk sign and has been approved. I do not think it is necessary to
process a new application so I am returning your check for $33. Please make sure the new
sign is placed in the previously approved location of the old sign and remember a valid
Certificate of Insurance is required for as long as the A-Frame sign continues to be placed
within the publio right-of-way.
If you should have any questions regarding the information contained in this letter, please call
me at (760) 434-2813.
Sincerely,
RLSBAD

Re: Approval of Sidewalk Sign Permit
Dear Alain:
Thank you for submitting your application for a Sidewalk Sign Permit. Having received all
required documents your application has been approved. Attached is a copy of the approved
Sidewalk Sign Permit for your records.
The attached permit allows you to retain your sign for; 1) as long as the Housing and
Redevelopment Commission allows sidewalk signs to remain, 2) as long as the sign continues
to meet the standards outlined within the Carlsbad Village Master Plan and Design Manual, and
3) as long as the sign is consistent with this permit approval. It is important to note that the
Housing and Redevelopment Commission will complete an annual review of the sidewalk sign
regulations to determine their continued applicability. A valid Certificate of Insurance is required
for as long as the A-Frame sign continues to be placed within the public right-of-way. Most
importantly, the sign must be placed as shown on the approved site plan.
If you should have any questions regarding the information contained in this letter, please call
me at (760) 434-2813.
Sincerely,
CITY QECARLSBAD

July 10, 1997
TO: VILLAGE BUSINESS
FROM: HOUSING AND REDEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
In January of 1996, the City Council, acting as the Housing and Redevelopment
Commission, approved new regulations for the display of Sidewalk Signs in the Village
Redevelopment Area only. Basically, the new regulations allow businesses in the Village
Redevelopment Area to continue to display freestanding signs, if they are consistent with
the new design standards and a new permit is approved by the Housing and
Redevelopment Office. These new sign standards were approved by the Califomia
Coastal Commission in September, 1996 and are now effective in all areas of the Village.
The purpose of this notice is to provide you with the new regulations and a copy of the
application form for the new required permit. If you have a previously approved A-
Frame, or other type of Sidewalk Sign, you will not be required to pay the fee of $30 for
the permit. However, you are still required to complete the enclosed application and
submit it wdth all required exhibits to the Housing and Redevelopment Office. If you do
not have a previously approved permit, you must submit the fee of $30 in addition to the
enclosed application form and required exhibits.
The following are some helpful hints to ensure that your Sidewalk Sign Permit is
processed quickly and easily:
• Fill in all of the blanks on the application form. If you do not believe the information
requested is applicable to your business, simply write "NYA" in the blank.
• Provide all required signatures. If you do not sign the certification statement which
contains a "hold harmless" statement, your permit will not be processed for approval.
• Read the application form carefully to determine the exhibits required as part of the
application. All of these exhibits must be provided in order for the permit to be
processed for approval.
• Do not "piecemeal" your application. Submit your application to the Housing and
Redevelopment Department only when all of your exhibits are ready. A "piecemeal"
approach to the application process creates confusion and often results in delayed
processing.

• There will be no exceptions to the design standards set forth within the Village
Master Plan and Design Manual. If your existing sign does not comply with these
standards, you will need to design and construct a new sign.
If you wish to continue the display of a sign for your business, you must submit the^
enclosed application with the appropriate exhibits and fee (if applicable) to the
Housing and Redevelopment Department by July 25,1997.
As part of the new standards, there is one very important point that should be noted. In
order to obtain approval to continue the display of your sign, the signage on your building
must also comply with the new sign standards set forth within the Village Master Plan
and Design Manual. Enclosed for your review is a summary of the new building sign
standards which was published in the Village Voice. The sign type(s) and the amount of
total signage on the building must comply with the new sign standards. As an additional
note, your Sidewalk Sign does not count in the total calculation for allowable signage.
Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter. Should you have any questions
about the application form, the required exhibits, or the sign standards, please call me at
(760) 434-2817.
Sincerely,
