the compieted sign for review by the Housing and Redevelopment Department.
4. LOCATION/PLACEMENT OF PROPOSED SIDEWALK/FREESTANDING SIGN:
Piease attach a site pian to this permit appiication which indicates the exact location for the
proposed sidewalk/freestanding sign. This site pian must aiso include a north arrow and
scale and indicate the location of the business in relationship to the location of the sign, the
amount of street frontage for the business, the width of the sidewalk in front of the
business, the locations of driveways, parking spaces, curb cuts for handicap access to the
public sidewalks, alleys and/or streets. See appiication checklist for additional
requirements.

Certification Statement I Certify that I am the Legal Business Owner of the subject business and that all of the
above information is true and correct to the best of my knowledge. I agree to accept and abide by any conditions placed
on the subject sign permit as a result of approval of this application. I agree to indemnify, hold harmless, and defend the
City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Redevelopment Agency or its officers or employees from all claims, damage or
liability to persons or property arising from or caused by the installation of the subject sidewalk/freestanding sign on the
public sidewalk pursuant to this permit unless the damage or liability was caused by the sole active negligence of the
City or its officers or employees. I have submitted a Certificate of Insurance to the City of Carlsbad in the amount of $1
million which lists the City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Redevelopment Agency as "additional insured". This Certificate
shall remain in effect for as long as the sidewalk/freestanding sign is placed within the public right-of-way. This
agreement is a condition of the issuance of this permit for the subject sidewalk/freestanding sign to be placed on the
public right-of-way. I understand that an approved sidewalk/freestanding sign permit shall remain in effect for as long as
sidewalk/freestanding signs are permitted within the Village Redevelopment Area and the permittee remains in
compliance with the subject approved permit. I also understand that the Housing and Redevelopment Commission may
conduct an annual review of the applicable sign regulations for sidewalk/freestanding signs and resen/es the right to
modify or elimin^ the regulations which currently allow for these signs.

Two sets of the following plans shall be submitted with one copy of this application form:
1. A site plan showing: The location of the sign and business it serves, and any adjoining streets,
driveways, doorways, fire and handicap access.
2. An elevation showing: Exterior dimensions of the sign; sign materials; proposed sign copy; and colors.
The plans, completed application forms including all signatures and the application fee can be submitted to
the Planning Depanment located at 2075 Las Palmas Drive, Carlsbad, CA 92009, prior to 4 pm.

the Zoning Ordinance. A sign pennit must be obtained from the City for these signs.
Ordinance Standards (mandatory)
• Maximum of one sign per business which must be located in front of the building to which it relates.
• Maximum area is len square feet per face. Maximum of two faces per sign.
• Maximum width of three feet and a maximum heigbt of five feet.
• Signs must be either square or rectangular.
• Signs must be of a durable matenal. and shall be kept, clean, neatly pamted. and m good repair.
• *A* fraine signs must be ten feet apart, tnmimum.
• Signs shall not block pedestnan or vehicle visibility or obstruct access to public streets, dnveways. parking spaces,
fire door?, fire escapes, handicapped access or any public nght-of-way and shall oot obscure or mtertere wuh any
traffic sign, public safety sign or notice.
• Signs shall not be pennanently affixed to any object, structure or the ground.
• The Signs are not allowed on public and pnvate property abutting pnme arterial and major arterial streets and sceuc

Gtuddine^ These guidelines are to assist the sign designer and compliment the mandatory ordinance standards. They are
mteaded to encourage a high level of design quaiity while aiso providmg flexibility to encourage creative design.
• 1. The sign design should be simple and easy to read. L'se a brief message. The fewer the words, the more effective
the sign. A simple sign with a bnef message ts faster to read, looks cleaner, and is more effecuve. Usmg overly
mtncate type hce* or mixmg typefaces on one sign also maices it more difficult to read quickly and reduces the sign's
ability lo commuiucate.
• 2. Use a durable matenal sxich as MDO (Medium Denstty Overlay) plywood or sictular wood-like matenal. Signs must
have a stamed or painted surface finish.
• 3. Tbe background color for all signs should be white.
• 4. The text should be m 3 colors oniy (too many colors compete with content for the viewer? attention). Fluorescent or
Oay-Olo colon are not accepuble.
• 5. If a unique business logo is proposed, it's color shall not count as one of the three text colon. (Item 4 above).
• 6. Changeable text areas should coinply with the above criteria (1-5) and should occupy no more than 50% of the sign
