Re: Big Bear Pole Sign
Dear Mr. Salomone:
I was sorry to learn after our meeting that some of
the Planning Staff has some reservation regarding the
reduced height of our pole sign on Elm Street.
There seems to be a question as to the definition
of freeway oriented business and the exposure allowed to
those types of businesses. I would submit that a super-
market which anchors a shopping center such as our store
on Elm Street does, is in fact a draw for the freeway
business going past Carlsbad. Our success or failure in
a center of this nature is in direct proportion to the
success of the other tenants. If we do well, they do
well. If we pull people off the freeway, they get the
spillover and the net result is more revenue for the City
of Carlsbad.
I would have like to had the sign at 35 feet which
would have given me both north and south-bound exposure
but I relented and went to 30 feet during the meeting
which I felt was a good compromise. To drop the sign
all the way to 22 feet as suggested by Planning, would
further damage our visibility. Anything you and the
Design Review Board can do to help would be appreciated.
This letter was written in place of a personal
appearance because I will be in Chicago on the night of
your meeting.
