4. LOCATION/PLACEMENT OF PROPOSED SIDEWALK/FREESTANDING SIGN:
Please attach a site plan to this permit application which indicates the exact location for the
proposed sidewalk/freestanding sign. This site plan must also include a north arrow and
scale and indicate the location of the business in relationship to the location of the sign, the
amount of street frontage for the business, the width of the sidewalk in front of the
business, the locations of driveways, parking spaces, curb cuts for handicap access to the
public sidewalks, alleys and/or streets. See application checklist for additional
requirements.

Certification Statement I Certify that I am the Legal Business Owner of the subject business and that all of the
above information is true and correct to the best of my knowledge. I agree to accept and abide by any conditions placed
on the subject sign permit as a result of approval of thib application. I agree to indemnify, hold harmless, and defend the
City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Redevelopment Agency or its officers or employees from all claims, damage or
liability to persons or property arising from or caused by the installation of the subject sidewalk/freestanding sign on the
public sidewalk pursuant to this permit unless the damage or liability was caused by the sole active negligence of the
City or its officers or employees. I have submitted a Certificate of Insurance to the City of Carlsbad in the amount of $1
million which lists the City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Redevelopment Agency as "additional insured". This Certificate
shall remain in effect for as long as the sidewalk/freestanding sign is placed within the public right-of-way. This
agreement is a condition of the issuance of this permit for the subject sidewalk/freestanding sign to be placed on the
public right-of-way. I understand that an approved sidewalk/freestanding sign permit shall remain in effect for as long as
sidewalk/freestanding signs are permitted within the Village Redevelopment Area and the permittee remains in
compliance with the subject approved permit. I also understand that the Housing and Redevelopment Commission may
conduct an annual review of the applicable sign regulations for sidewalk/freestanding signs and reserves the right to
modify or eliminat^the r^l^titjhs^hjjzrrcj^rrently allow for these signs.

PLAN SUBMITTAL REOUIREMENTS
Two sets of the following plans shall be submitted with one copy of this apphcation form:
1. A site plan showing: The locatioh of the sign and business it serves, and any adjoining streets,
driveways, doorways, fire and handicap access.
2. An elevation showing: Exterior dimensions of the sign; sign materials; proposed sign copy; and colors.
The plans, completed application forms including all signatures and the apphcation fee can be submitted to
the Planning Department located at 2075 Las Palmas Drive, Carlsbad, CA 92009, prior to 4 pm.

Ordinance StAndards (mandatorv)
Maximum of one sign per busmess wtuch must be located in front of the building to wbch it relates.
Maximum area is ten square feet per face. Maximum of two faces per sign.
Maximum width of three feet and a maximum height of five feet.
Signs must be either square or rectangular.
Signs must be of a durable matenal, and shall be kept, clean, neatly pamted. and m good repair.
*A* frame signs must be ten feet apart, mmimum.
Signs shall aot block pedestnan or vehicle visibility or obstruct access to public streets, dnveways. parkmg spaces,
fire doors, fire escapes, handicapped acce&s or any public nght-of-way and shall oot obscure or mterfere wuh any
traffic sign, public safety sign or aotice.
Signs shall not be permanently affixed to any object, structure or the ground.
The signs are not allowed on public and pnvate property abuttmg pnme arterial and major artenal streets and scemc
comdors except u the redeveiopment area.
'A' frame signs are prohibited after January 1, 1995.
Cuiddir>e^ These guidelines are to assist the sign designer and comptimeot the mandatory ordinance standards. They are
rntended to encourage a high level of design quality while also providmg flexibility to encourage creative design.
* 1. The sign design shouid be simple and easy to read. Use a brief message. The fewer the words, the more effecttve
the sign. A simple sign with a bnef message is faster to read, looks cleaner, and is more effective. Usmg overly
mtncate type ^ces or mixmg typefaces on one sign also makes it more difficult to read quickly aod reduces the sign's
ability to communicate.
* 2. Use a durable matenal such as MDO (Medium Density Overlay) plywood or siimlar wood-like matenal. Signs must
have a stamed or pamted surface fimsh.
* 3. The background color for all signs should be white.
* 4. The text should be in 3 colors only (too many colors cocopete with content for the viewer? atteotioo). Fluorescent or
Day-Olo colors are aot acceptable.
* S. If a unique business logo is proposed, it's color shall not cotmt as one of the three text colors. (Item 4 above).
* 6. Changeable text areas should comply with the above cntena (l-S) and should occupy no more than 50% of the sign
face. Paper or non-ngid changeable areas are not acceptable. SUGGESTED 'A' FRAME DESIGNS
